I've been taking both of my boys to Matt's for a few years now. We make the drive from Brown County simply because Matt is the BEST. My boys always get a great cut but more than that, they have come to think so highly of Matt and the rest of the folks in the shop. Whether he is checking in on girlfriend status, getting sports updates or just kidding around with them, the whole staff makes them feel welcome. If you're looking for an experience that takes it to the next level...go here, you won't be disappointed. Just to note from other reviews: they can cut longer hair without issue. Hard to find a barber shop this good, trust me. Been in the Military for 14 yrs and I have went through my fair share of good and bad barbers, more bad then good but Matt's shop is on point. Highly impressed! Every cutter seemed to be highly skilled and you even get some good laughs in while their. You may wait a lil bit but it is more than worth it with the attention to detail you will receive towards your preferred cut.

Two things are made very clear when you come here, First the owner does NOT care about his business as the shop is DISCUSSING, second is that the owner Matt only care about his “special” customers. I have waited hours just to give someone walk in and cut the whole line, all we got for an explanation was he was here earlier, when I asked if I could do the same I was told no It is first come first serve. I don’t really understand why this place is so popular, haircuts are average and if you leave to pay for your parking spot you will most likely be skipped.

Only good if you want really short hair. I asked for hair that was medum on sides and longer on top, even showed a picture. Ended up with maybe 1 1/2 inch on top, and nearly a fade on the sides. People are nice, but unless you want a fade, don’t go here.

I didn't understand the concept when I first walked in my first time no one was there to tell me to put my name on the board I felt foolish sitting there for quite a while until I got up and asked one of the stylist what to do or how to get serviced and by then it was too late put my name up on the board and pretty much they were closed so it was a waste of my time I don't know how they make money but I guess some people like to wait forever for a haircut

Matt's Barber Shop is THE place to go to get sharp cuts in Amherst. I've been there only a handful of times but not one time did I leave with a haircut anything less than exactly what I wanted. Every barber has their pros and all of them hold a standard often missed by other local barbershops and especially big chain ones. Right when you step into Matt's you get a sense of feeling right at home. From the time they greet you to the time you step out of the chair and out the door, they make sure to handle your individual style and hair-type with care and precision. 5/5 would recommend .

If you are looking for an excellent haircut, shave or both, this is the best place in the Indy and Greenwood area. Matt, the owner, will happily greet everyone who walks through the door, all of the barbers are well trained and you will get a good haircut and if you do not, Matt will make sure it gets fixed. Prices are reasonable with a haircut running around $15 or so dollars.

Went here this morning for a no-frills barber shop cut--the classic taper--and got exactly what I wanted from Derek. He was friendly, efficient, and gave me a great cut. (Plus, as any good barber shop should, he gave me a straight-razor shave at the end. Can't believe I've been out of barber shops for so long. What was I thinking?) I will definitely be going back.

This place deserves a 3, it's got a great owner with a good sense of community and he is very ambitious. The downside to this place would be the lack of consistency in barbers, there moving in and out, and some are not so good. Additionally, no fault to the place, but rather the costumers (surrounding college students), this place seems to have swings in popularity. Not just the school season, but events during the school season that prompt haircuts makes the wait longer than normal 1.75 hours wait. So it's a pretty much a shot in the dark on what you're getting into, that said the general outcome is still good/acceptable.

Chad is who cuts my hair and trims me up. He also cuts both my boys. He is meticulous and makes sure you're happy with the finished product. He is ALWAYS in demand so get there early or expect a wait. I highly recommend giving them a shot.

I won't go as low as one star because I've only had one cut here and it seems like a nice group of people, but this was the worst haircut I've ever paid for (and I regularly go to Great Clips). The barber entirely ignored my requests and took off more than twice as much length as I specified. My bangs are now almost gone and what's left is uneven (varying by a whole inch from left to right). At least when my grandpa lopped off all my hair he was even and gave me a quarter. This shop seems to be for people with close cuts who want to get in and out. I went in for a modest trim and lost nearly everything. I asked him again part way thru to go easy on the bangs and he got defensive and proceeded to take even more off. This isn't a factor in the rating, but be aware that they only take cash and checks. This wasn't brought to my attention until it was too late.

Complete waste of time. They give a good men’s haircut but the waitlist process is an unmitigated disaster. Show up 15 minutes after they open on a Saturday and there’s already 15 people on the list (maintained on a dinky notebook) ahead of you. Wait for an hour and they’ve gone through 3 names on the list. Come back 45 minutes after that and... your name is crossed off the list even though there are people whose names are still ahead of you on the list. While waiting an hour this morning for a haircut I missed out on because I decided to come back 45 minutes later, I overheard Matt joking about people’s reactions when they come in and see the waitlist. Well excuse me but not everyone is a college student with nothing better to do than sleep in late and play video games. I’ve had one haircut here (and it was great) but their inability to competently manage customer traffic is a complete joke. That’s horrible customer service and completely disrespectful of their (potential) customers’ time — no matter how friendly the people otherwise are and no matter how good their haircuts may be. Edit: I agree with the other reviewer who noted that there seems to be a different system for “special” customers.

After struggling to find a place in Amherst that could consistently cut my hair well, I came across Matt's Barber Shop 5 years ago. Over the last 5 years I have consistently gotten a great haircut and experienced wonderful customer service on each visit. If the mood is "clearly forced" as another reviewer has suggested, he and his staff have been forcing it on every visit for the last 5 years. If you go during the school year (September - April), yes, you will have to wait to get your hair cut. This is due to the popularity of this barber shop with local college students. Is that a bad thing? I'd say no, despite what other reviews mention. Bring something to read (you likely have your phone) or call ahead and make an appointment. I've seen people of all ages come in here to get their hair cut (yes, people 50+) and the barbers treat everyone the same. I've been to several salons and barbers in the area and this shop by far delivers a consistent, quality haircut time after time.

I have seen people who look like they haven't seen a civilization in six months come out looking like they were about to go to a life changing interview, fresh and cut to the prime. Matt's' stylists can can cut all races and make it work. Matt's barber shop experiences unusually high amounts of customers due to the colleges surrounding. For this reason, it is the worst barber shop, they could care less how long you wait, charge you $15 for any regular trim. I was there today and when one customer ran to pay his parking (no free parking) he was made fun of by the large barber with tattoos. They never clean up the hair except for on the ground, and just all around screw customers by deciding not to have a sign up list, you have 10-15 kids waiting, noone knowing whos next and all so that Matt can have a constant flow of business.

I've been going to Matt for as long as he's had his shop, and I'm baffled by the negative reviews here. He has consistently given me first-rate haircuts and beard trims. He and the other barbers always ask what type of cut I want, and they do it. They treat all customers with respect and cordiality. The atmosphere in the shop is warm and friendly; all customers, from very young children on up, are made to feel welcome. Be prepared for a long wait if, like me, you want Matt to cut your hair--but it's worth it. And the prices can't be beat.

Matt's is the epitome of a great barber shop. My gripes are that they need a bigger space, with 5 barbers. I arrived at 7:35 in the morning, (They open at 8:00) and there were six people milling about outside, and three people waiting in their cars. As soon as the doors opened, there was a clear posturing of "who had arrived first" and a lot of "Matt takes whoever's car got here first" .. It was very surreal. Having had three haircuts from Jordan-(EXCELLENT!) I was going to wait, but ran out of time. I had waited almost two hours. The next day I went to Supercuts... What a mistake. I walked out with a bad haircut fifteen minutes later, and not happy. Matts is cheaper, they spend at least 45 minutes on you, and do a superior job by far. It is sometimes a huge wait, but definitely worth the wait. Appointments are only on Tuesday- so book one now, or get there REALLY early.

The staff was welcoming and kind but the shop policies are not clear online. They charge $6 to make an online appointment and only accept cash. To make a long story short I paid an extra $10 (including ATM fees) to discover they really only know to have cut fades and buzz cuts.

It's a very popular place! I know of people (often times students) who travel from the five colleges to get haircuts. The service provided is awesome. The offer for Tuesday appointments is good but really for people who have flexible work hours. The summer hours feel more manageable since college students are gone (and oddly enough, it's still pretty packed). The barber team is super talented- the finished product will not disappoint. And I think they've just initiated a new "system" with walk-ins: you sign in, they give you an estimate on how long you have to wait and you can come back at that time.

So this is my go to place for haircuts when I am at university here. At first I got one from the University barber shop, run by students, which was kind of bad. I am personally not a fan of place like Supercuts either. Matt's Barber Shop is not only a great place to get a haircut, they actually go out of their way to have a conversation with you. This has ranged to regular small talk all the way to a heated discussion about the future of techno and dubstep. I've been to a lot of barbershops around the Valley but I love Matt's. Yes, you'll have to wait, but it's totally worth it. If you don't have a lot of time just make an appointment for a Tuesday and you'll be in and out in less than an hour. Oh, parking can be a bit of a challenge sometimes.

Expect at least 2 hours of waiting minimum on any given day. Oh and if you have your name on the list they switch to appointments randomly, they’ll kick you out. Matt’s is such a great idea for a barber shop but their customer service and efficiency are laughable. Go to Sandy’s across the street, it’s cheaper and no wait.

I've been going to Matt's for a year now. Kristen is the best barber I've ever had. She's extremely nice as well. Matt's shop is A+. I could sit in there all day and just hang out. It almost feels old school.

Very overrated barbershop. I've been here twice, just to be sure I wasn't judging too quickly the first time. And both times I got terrible cuts, I mean just awful man. I've tried Matt and John. You're most likely better off going somewhere else. Don't listen to the hype, extremely overrated place.

This is by far the most overrated barber shop I have ever set my foot into. The first time I went was on a casual weekday about 20-25 minutes before the shop was to close. As I walked in, Immediately the owner said to me "we're actually not taking any more people in today". Then I had just let him know that all I needed was a quick beard line up. After he hesitatingly said he'll squeeze me in..they had me wait an hour because none of the other barbers were willing to help out. After I finally got my beard lined up, may I recall they did not even do a good job. I asked if I could get a sharper line because it didint look good. But my response was "the line dosent get any sharper than that". After I left I said okay maybe everyone could have one bad experience so I decided to give the shop a second chance a few weeks later. This time I walked in 45 minutes to an hour before the scheduled closing time. Again, I could not believe it, but as I walked in, the owner once again said to me "we're actually not taking any more people in today because we're busy and we close in 45 minutes". I was in complete shock. Although I can understand they were busy, I had walked in almost an hour before the scheduled closing time, which in my eyes is quite a respectable amount of time. I just decided to walk out and it has come to my senses to never attend this barber shop ever again. All a college kid was tryina get was a beard line up and I couldn't even get that. Guys trust me.. This place is way overrated and there are much better places to get a hair cut around here.

This place is very popular because they pay much more attention to detail than the chain shops and the prices are still good. The down side is that the wait time for a walk-in is so punishing that many with busy schedules will find it impractical.
