Safety concern, please read. I can count the number of negative reviews I have left in my life on one hand and still have fingers remaining. It is something I avoid unless I feel it is important to the community. I had been to Bulwark a few times before and since I'd received a decent haircut I overlooked their lack of professionalism: smoking at the front door, communication issues, and a hip sense of arrogance or at the least seemingly nonchalant about having my business. This time the experience was the same and much more. I let Paul know how I usually cut my hair and where I usually go. Paul then began my haircut by trash-talking the other barber. The jealousy and distain turned an already unprofessional experience into a disappointing one. I considered having a chat with Paul about how his behavior was likely hurting himself more than his competition. In my judgement, it would have fallen on deaf ears. Needless to say I noticed I needed a fix and went elsewhere for it. In passing, I mentioned to someone else that I had been to another barber and received quite a bit of gossip with my haircut. I didn't give any names or places. Despite that, they immediately guessed it was Bulwark and specifically Paul. I found that amazing until what I learned next. Apparently, Paul has a reputation for extreme jealousy and retaliation. I was shown photos of a gentleman's neck line red, bloody, repeatedly sliced, and bleeding through to his shirt collar. The photos were clearly taken on the spot inside Bulwark and allegedly immediately following a jealous retaliation haircut at the hands of Paul. I'm so glad I did not try to talk sense to this man. I am even more glad that I did not come back and ask Paul to fix my cut. I can't imagine what would have happened to me coming in there complaining about my haircut and trying to encourage Paul to be reasonable with his competition. The photos I saw we're horrifying. For your own safety, stay away from Bulwark. I can't believe Bulwark would continue to employ somebody as dangerous as this. I will gladly remove this review once Bulwark is no longer a danger to the community. Until then, customers beware!

I moved to CDA from San Diego, and getting a fresh cut and a cool experience is something I look for. Bulwark Barber, and specifically, Marco, does this for me. He hasn't steered me wrong. I give him freedom to offer suggestions and he gives me a fresh cut and awesome experience everytime. If you are looking for a sweet spot and an awesome barber I recommend Marco 100%!

I had the BEST experience at Bulwark today and can’t say enough how highly I recommend this place! My son is super shy around people he doesn’t know and he has never sat through a haircut before without sitting on my lap or crying. Until today! Paul was AMAZING with my son, so kind, professional, and personable, and he also gave him the best haircut he’s ever had. The shop atmosphere and ambiance is next level and the whole place has such a great vibe. The other barbers in the shop all said goodbye to us on our way out and my son couldn’t stop smiling after we left. As a mom of 3 boys who is new to CDA, finding Bulwark was such a blessing! I can’t wait to bring my other sons in to see Paul and I love that I now know that I have a fantastic barber to bring them to for years to come. Thanks for making my little guy’s day, Paul! If I could give this place a 0 star rating I would. To start the experience, I walked in on Monday with my Dad (visiting town wanting a straight razor shave) at 1050 to ask if they had availability. Upon entering, the single barber there explains that there should be a second barber present and he is not. He asked if I was John (presumably his appt). I was told that Mondays are reserved for reservations only. I understand this and ask is there a way to setup an appt that day. He told me to go to their website and that their availability would be around 1 or 2. At this point I wanted to ask when John's appt is as there are 2 of us ready and in the shop to go. Instead I go online and schedule my appts for my dad and I to get a shave and a haircut. After scheduling, I get a return email that says that they had to adjust my appt because they couldnt fit a beard trim in with my haircut. I decide to call today to find a resolution and no answer. Voicemail comes on, mailbox is full. Immediately cancel both appointments. I tried 3 times to give you people my money, and 3 times get denied/excuses. I don't know who the barber(and lack thereof) was, but that's bad business. I've taken my business elsewhere and very likely won't return. I've heard good things about this place and was looking forward to taking my dad with me to get a shave and a haircut like we did when I was younger and this place definitely didn't live up to the recommendations. Seems like all barbers in this area either are horrible with time, customer service, or can't shave/cut hair better than super cuts.

I do not usually speak ill of another small business but I must comment. I have a lodging establishment in town and regularly have guests who are looking for a place to have their hair cut. I sent a guest to Bulwark (who says they take walk-ins). He did not call in advance. He arrived at about 10:00 am on a Thursday. The owners were outside smoking. They said they did not have time. He got a clear sense that they just did not want to cut his hair. Perhaps they thought is was not "hip" enough. I am not sure but he was very disappointed that they treated him like he was not worthy of their services. I am sad because I really need to find a good barber that I can recommend to my guests.

If you're looking for a great, classic haircut - Bulwark Barber may be your new favorite place. During my 5 or 6 visits, I've found Matt to be very passionate about his craft. He takes the art very seriously and has studied / mentored with some great, classic barbers. I never really understood why I couldn't get the haircut I wanted from other shops around town. Turns out the reason is that most shops that cut guys hair are staffed with stylists - not barbers. Nothing against stylists if that's the look you're going for, but they don't cut hair the same way barbers do.

Call ahead and get told, “Paul has an opening at noon, come in then” only to show up at 1150 to find out Paul is at lunch. No big deal. We gotta eat. He’ll be back at noon I’m sure. Still waiting at 1230. Paul might be here, cutting someone’s hair, or he might still be at lunch? No one has addressed me. I guess I’ll just sit here and stew until I’m acknowledged...or I’ll leave, because I actually have stuff to do today. Just some friendly advice. 1) don’t over promise 2) acknowledge your waiting customers. I was going to buy like $50 worth of products and return if I was treated well. Instead, I’m leaving without spending a penny and losing an hour out of my day off.

Bulwark is the best men’s barber shop in Coeur d’Alene because they give great haircuts. The barber will ask the customer how they want their hair cut specifically and may ask for a picture from the internet or somewhere else for a reference. This is to ensure that they get the details right and that the end result is as close as possible to what the customer asked for. After this, they start cutting hair with the quick hands of an expert, asking the customer along the way if it is looking up to their standards. When the barbers use the electric razor, they know how much pressure to use so that the razor is cutting efficiently but without any discomfort to the guest. Everyone has a different head shape and hair type, so not every haircut will look the same on different people, but the barbers do an excellent job of shaping each haircut to their specific client’s head and face shape. After the cutting, if a customer chooses a wash, they will get the loose clippings from their hair washed out in a sink. The sink has a waterproof pad for the neck, so it is not uncomfortable, and the barber washes the head with shampoo and two types of high-quality conditioner. The customer will also get a face wrap, which is a warm, damp towel that is put on the face which has a soothing feeling. However, if the customer chooses to not do the wash, then the barber will still blow-dry their hair, style it, and add some free hair product. After this, they will ask the client one last time if everything looks good, and they are done. You are left with a fresh haircut that will keep you looking good for weeks until your next visit!

I went in with high expectations because of the reviews. My barber seemed like a cool dude but chopped up my hair and it literally hurt afterward. Like you might get with a new person at Cost Cutters or Great Clips. Actually Great Clips has never hurt so I'd say go there if your looking to go unscathed. If you actually want a decent haircut, I'd recommend Clean Cut a million times over.

I went the other day to get my haircut and I didn't receive all the services what they said they do on Facebook and the Website. I didn't mind waiting the time, it was a 1 hour wait, they did not shave the back of my neck, no hot towel and I didn't get the scalp massage. Matt and the other barber both had separate personal emergencies and were closing early, but Matt decided to still give me a haircut and straight razor shave so I would look my best at Dave Noordam's memorial and it was much appreciated. The warm feel of decor and people working there really made me love the experience too. Matt was born and raised in Coeur d'Alene and I was happy to give a 40% tip!

First the good, one barber there actually knows how to cut hair. The other three are clueless. I have been to Bulwark Barber on 3 separate occasions each sharing the same experience. Let me save you the time and money by recommending you go somewhere else. The first time I went in it was about 1:00pm, I asked how long the wait was the barber replied "Umm...hour and a half or 2 hours". That's fine I said you can put me on the list and I will come back. He replied they don't have a list and remember the order that people came in. This struck me as odd but I said I would be back in an hour and a half to be safe. Well to make a long story short I came back in an 1.5 hours and still had to wait an additional hour to get my haircut. All of that being said, I will say that the barber did a great job and took his time so I forgave the way that this barbershop is managed. The second time same story, 2 or 3 hour wait. I came back in 2 hours to be safe. This entire time the barber shop is staffed by 1 single person. There are 4 booths to cut hair in. It's the middle of the afternoon and they have a 3 hour wait, why on earth is there only 1 person working. So he finally convinces another barber to come in after a long phone call. Once that barber comes in he takes his time getting set up. I am clearly next up to have my hair cut. And then an old friend walks in and he jumps the line in front of everyone and the barber says don't worry about it he can squeeze him in real quick. So I have my timer on my phone running just to satisfy my curiosity. It takes him 54 minutes to cut his buddies hair. He finishes up and I'm next. It took him 6 minutes to cut my hair. It was one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I actually went to another place in town to have them buzz my head afterwards because of the way it looked. I couldn't even finish tipping the barber before he had 1 foot out the door to Vape with his buddy whose hair he just cut. There were still clients behind me probably another 1.5 hours worth of haircuts and the barber takes a Smoke(Vape) break after 2 haircuts. Do they not have to report to anybody, is there no management here? The third time same story I said I would go back as long as I got the guy who cut my hair the first time but after they said it was a 2 hour wait I bounced and learned my lesson. Lastly, it is very unprofessional to say you open at 10am, when that is clearly not true. I get there early at 9:55am to be first in line and then I open the door and it is already a 2 hour wait. Please explain how you open at 10am, I arrive at 9:55am and there is a 2 hour wait with people already sitting there waiting inside of the barbershop. What time do you actually open??? Once again, unfair treatment of customers and preferential treatment to friends of the barbers. If the owner/management reads this please take some constructive criticism. I really want to support local business but you are making it hard to. I know I am not the only person who feels this way which is why I wrote this review. You have 1 good barber working there, hire more people like him. He is a very hard worker and takes his time doing things the right way. Also please use a LIST of whose next like every other barbershop known to man. The only reason I can think of not to use a list is so you can offer preferential treatment to your friends/bros. If you aren't close friends with the barbers here expect to be cut in front of when their friend rolls up. It's very annoying and unprofessional to treat customers this way. I can say that I won't be back after having three negative experiences here. I will consider removing this review if the owner/management makes changes that benefit customers.

If you are looking for a barbershop with easy appointments and great customer service, Bulwark Barber comes with it all! I just moved into town and I looked up local barbershops and I was able to make an appointment within a day and I was cut by Marco. On top of his great cutting and fade skills, he served me with joy and was professional. The place has very cool atmosphere and I’m happy to call it my barbershop now!
