Hair Science is taking it back to an old time barbershop feel with the sharp dressed barbers and welcoming family friendly environment. After my first visit they remembered my name and what we had talked about previously. While it's an classic feel the cuts are anything but, tight fades modern hipster cuts they can do it all including tame that wild Alaskan beard. I'm pretty sure the owner Shawn was intentionally trying to make it so i wouldn't want to come back, even after I so nicely looked past the fact that he cut hairs that shouldn't have been cut. I have a side shave And long hair that I put up into a ponytail and had him clean up the sides and line it and when I took my ponytail out a lot of hair came out ,More so than anywhere else I've had it done and when I told him about it he offered me a Refund and was kind of defensive about the whole situation and I told him that I liked the way he cut my hair just to make sure it didn't happen again and so the 2 times that I went in after he didn't seem very friendly or like he wanted me there at all and the last time I was there I waited over 20 minutes for my Appointment and he didn't do a very good job, I tried making an appointment for today over a week ago and he sent me the confirmation text twice and the email stating that I had an appointment and when I showed out there was absolutely no one there so I called him and he was again defensive trying to argue with me about saying that they called me to tell me that it was there was no appointment when I had spoke to him and we had talked about coming in on the Labor Day. Not very professional nor friendly and the only reason why I had gone back is because it is hard to find someone who can do designs and I was happy with the designs but not happy with the customer service.

I was impressed when I walked in, greeted right away. Staff was very friendly and introduced themselves as they passed by... very clean, nice layout of the store. I did have my hair cut, but unfortunately not to exactly I’d expected... showed the gentleman what I usually wear it like, nothing crazy but longer on top and shorter on the sides... as me if I wanted it trimmed, partly my bad I said yes take about an 3/4 of inch off... I’m not sure if I scared him into maybe thinking removing too much.. I had told him last experiences got itcwait to short... 45 minutes later didn’t seem to have removed much at all, and when looked in mirror like a mess... guess I should have spoke up ..

I made it here a handful of times, the cuts trended to the aggressive side which is fine. The price is ok and the students were friendly and polite. Then one time I had a cut scheduled but had a family member ask for a ride to the doctor so naturally I had to cancel. While I understood and apologized that I was cancelling short notice I got a condescending mini lecture about short notice cancellations. I was also told if I wanted a cut there I would have to show up and wait for a student to have free time. While I can respect an owner going to bat for their employees the response could've been more professional.

Very professional from the moment you walk in to attempt at setting you up for recurring appointments as you leave. Definitely had the barbershop feel with the TVs and the conversation. I came in to get my beard trimmed and at first glance the lineup and the overall shape was good. But the next day when I combed it out, it became apparent it should have been combed out more while I was in the chair. There were a bunch of super long hairs still. They’re still learning, and this was my first visit I’ll probably give them another shot.

These folks are very nice and extremely polite but I don't think that they are "cut out to cut hair" (at least my guy was not). Haircut took well over an hour, stylist seemed lost, the clippers "clipped" my neck, and I felt that my haircut was mediocre at best. I would not return.

I moved to Anchorage a little over 2 years ago in 2016. I;m from the East coast so a clean, precise haircut for my particular hair style is a necessity. I tried a few different places that were over my price range for a quality haircut. I came upon Hair Science and made an appointment. They told me the haircuts would take about an hour because it's a barber school. You arrive at the top of the hour and every time the staff greets and welcomes you. Literally the enter staff acknowledges that you've just arrived like you just showed up to a house party. It feels good and kind of breaks the ice, so to speak. They all dress very sharp. Each student has different skill levels which Shawn (Owner and teacher) goes over and after the haircut makes sure he is happy with it and you are. They are consistent with the quality they bring out and they are always improving. I remember consecutive appointments I would be assigned to the same person and they got significantly better each time. It's nice to be a part of a place that cares about it's growth in a sense that the students are working to get better at giving you a fresh haircut. Everyone's always in a good mood and there's always music in the background and sports on the TV's. It's more than just a service at Hair Science. It's an experience. I look forward to each of my appointments cause I forget everything I'm stressing about in life. I'm at this place and I'm present. And in that 1 hour I'm being laughing and chatting with the staff. There's also a sweet picture of Marvel's Black Panther on the back wall. Hair Science Forever.

I've been going to hair science for 7 years. I've seen the shop grow from just a barbershop into a first class barber/beauty school. Shawn is very prompt and on time with every appointment. I like the fact that I can walk in at my scheduled time, get my haircut and leave, unlike most shops that have you waiting around forever. Everything about the shop from the staff to the atmosphere are very professional. I have a 4 year old son that has been a customer since his first haircut. Shawn is the only one I trust to cut his hair and is patient with him throughout the time he is in the chair. The shop is VERY kid friendly, there is no profanity and no offensive music playing. If you want a professional haircut where the staff will treat you and your hair with first class and professionalism Hair Science is definitely the place to go

First time going to Hair Science. Things to remember it’s a training school for Barbers and Hair Stylists. I have to say as a professional training manager, the staff did this right! I walked in was greeted professionally, very clean, great friendly vibe. Had my hair and beard cut and I am totally pleased. I had an appointment and was taken back on time which was so awesome. We all know we make hair cut appointments and they seem to always be late. Not saying that couldn’t happen, but for me it didn’t. The cost is on par or cheaper then most places I have gone and they wash your hair as part of it. I left feeling like you should after a good cut and conversation in the chair. I will return!! To the instructors, keep it up, you have a great program only wish I knew sooner.

This was an altogether wonderful experience at the barber's. The customer service, professionalism and polished manners of the owner made me feel very taken care of and catered to the second I walked in the door. Everybody likes to feel like an individual and wants to feel heard, especially when getting a haircut. These guys have good vibes and listen to what you want in a cut. The result shows in the cut. Excellent barbering skills complete the customer care package. The store has Alaskan made hair products that are quite nice. I am using some now. The shop was clean and tidy and very nicely kept and yet left some room for playfulness. One whole wall of the shop is dedicated to a mural of the Marvel character, Black Panther. It makes the atmosphere just a little more relaxing. Great guys, great vibes and excellent convo. I could not ask for more from a barbershop.

I can't comment on their work as I haven't been able to get my haircut. Let me explain: The first time I visited, I walked in without an appointment and was turned away because they were booked up and low staffed. I was encouraged to make an appointment another time--understandable. Inconvenient but understandable. I made an appointment last week for today. I walked in, told them I had an appointment, and sat down. A few minutes later, the gentlemen asks me why I "didn't confirm my appointment"? I told him I didn't think I had to considering I already scheduled the appointment. We went back and forth for a few seconds about a requirement to confirm appointments via text. He explained that since I did not confirm my already scheduled appointment, the other patron sitting in the waiting area with me was given my time slot. The employee did offer to fit me in later in the day, but at that point I had enough. What is the point of taking appointments only and then not honoring them when the customer shows up at a scheduled time?

What I like about this place - staffs are very friendly, acknowledges your presence soon as customer comes in. This place is well maintained and clean. Best haircut experience ever!!! Shawn is a professor in customer service. I've been in the service industry 18 yrs and consider myself a expert in customer service but Shawn is on another level. If you work with customers in your work place I suggest going to see Shawn even if you just got a haircut yesterday. You'll leave there better at your job and with a better cut than you get at your current barber shop. He is training his students in excellence all the while controlling the quality of work they produce. I've had all of levels of solon experiences from low end to $200 haircuts and nobody comes close to the service i received there. Truly the best there is. Hair Science in Anchorage is an exceptional place to get your hair cut where the craft of the trade and outstanding customer service combine for a wonderful hair cut experience. Their true customer service comes in the form of going above and beyond with proper greetings utilizing Sir/Ma’am, offering drinks, taking your coat, remembering your name, the staff wearing formal attire, and striking up good quality conversation. The haircut is an excellent experience with great detail going into the work even utilizing straight razors. I came in with a picture of what I wanted but my hair was still too short. Lester worked progressively on it every two weeks for an extended time to give me the exact hair cut I requested after it had grown to the proper length. Lester does an excellent job with a very high attention to detail. Shawn, the owner, is the epitome of a great manger and instructor. I have witnessed him several times mentor the other hair stylist with enthusiasm that shows he really cares. I also greatly appreciate how much work has been put in to make sure the parlor is clean and updated. You can tell the building they are in is very old and needs work on the outside. But inside you can see where great dedication has been placed on polishing it up. It seems the art of customer service and displaying a passion for your trade may be fleeting on some businesses. If you appreciate people who are passionate about their trade and want to get that experience with your hair cut, Hair Science is the place to go where Shawn and his staff will take care of you.

Very professional staff. I’ve only been once, and they make sure that they don’t mess up. It’s a little tension felt type of environment, but of course they do have students being graded. If conversations happen, it’s as if the conversation is almost forced, but it may just be me because I hate to sit there for 30+ minutes in silence. I’d recommend this place to anyone if they come to Anchorage though! - $20 for student haircuts - $30 for professional haircuts

This place is clean and the people are professional. They have a comfortable waiting area with beverages and snacks. I took my 14 year old to get his hair cut for school and they did a fantastic job. Highly recommend!

Keeping an old tradition alive, they offer one of the best servicing in town. The fellas are a brotherhood that treat outsiders like a long lost friend coming home. Starting from walking in, I was greeted personally, and exiting, I was bid farewell with a sense of high honor and compliments. Speaking of compliments, their cuts are second to none. They really do have it down to a science. The attention to detail and understanding of what they're doing is very assuring, to the point I have no qualms with letting them take the wheel after the initial "shorter here, longer there". You'd think their hands are guided by the Lord Almighty himself. S++, 10/10 would recommend.

One of the worst haircuts of my life :( I wanted to like this place, was recommended by a friend and the staff were friendly and professional. But the haircut on top is a long mess around the cowlick, there is a large bald spot on my chin and weird long neck beard on the side. He wrecked. Wrecked, my beard, then charged me for it? Didn't mention he'd got a little closer than intended there... I didn't notice you can CLEARLY see the skin under my chin until after I left otherwise I would have been a little less polite about how sad I am about the way I now look. Recommend avoidance if you have facial hair and want to keep it

Let me start by saying I hate being touched. Especially my head. And not once did I feel uncomfortable– wash, cut, and shave! As far as the haircut, I look like a rich person. I always come home and touch up haircuts the rare times I do get them, but not this time. Every line is perfect, even the beard. I could get addicted to how good I feel. I really liked this place, they do excellent work and if you have the patience to deal with them they provide excellent results. Your marketing is just too aggressive : upon giving your information to them, they will call you regularly to get you back in. This is a huge turn off for me, as I dont like getting regular calls during working hours to solicit a haircut. I find this improfessional, and honestly the constant calling has driven me away I have nothing but high praise for the barbers and the owner, but the constant calls drive me nuts.

I needed a haircut badly. The place that I normally go wasn't open so I tried out Hair Science. I was very impressed. I got set up with an appointment over the phone and when I showed up they were ready for me. I got a great haircut and a shave with a straight razor. Both were very skillfully and quickly done. My barber was pleasant and easy to work with. The price was excellent - I felt the value of the services I received far outweighed the price. I didnt have a great hair experience twice Ive been there. The folks were very polite, and my hair didnt come out terrible. However, it wasnt cut I asked (hard part, 0 guard fade, the sides lined). They did whatever they wanted to. Side were razor bladed to mid high, my hard part was texturized where I couldnt comb it over.

Been there a few times, but this was my last. Stopped in between a connection flight to work and had an appointment at 11:30 and they gladly took me at 11:00 after asking Nicely for a quick hair wash after it was cut so my head wouldn’t ich they suppsoably didn’t have enough time considering I was one of the only people in the shop at the time and even offering a $100 tip for 3 minutes of wash they said I’d still have to wait a while. The cut was horrible as well I asked for a clean fohawk type cut and I left looking like I had an interview with Alaska state troopers.
