Visiting my folks for the holiday, my mom was excited to purchase a couple of pies from Sweets Cakes & Pastry. One star is being VERY generous! She ordered a pumpkin pie & a pecan pie. The pumpkin pie was burnt on the top and the crust was extremely thick & too hard to cut through with a fork. We ended up only being able to eat the pumpkin pie filling. I don't even know where to start with the pecan pie. The crust was chewy, undercooked & almost impossible to scrape off of the bottom of the pie tin. The filling only covered 3/4 of the actual pie! There was a huge, empty, gaping hole in the pie. My mom was embarrassed to serve these to her guests. I understand Laramie is a small town & there is not a lot of bakeries to choose from. However, I truly believe the reason that small businesses fail is because of instances such as this. For the $40 spent on these two pies, my mom was so disappointed and certainly any of the local grocery stores or even Wal-mart would've been a much better choice. If I actually lived here, I would NEVER recommend this bakery to anyone...not even for something as simple as a pie. (Too bad I couldn't include a photo!)
**** Update 12/25/17
The bakery contacted my folks & asked them to give Sweets Cakes & Pastery another chance to earn their business. They offered them desserts for Christmas & by chance, my family & I , as well as all of my siblings & their families were back in Laramie for the holidays. (the same 12 people who experienced the unfortunate pie debacle) Sweets provided a chocolate cherry Yule Log & a tray of Christmas cookies. The Yule Log was decorated beautifully & the chocolate cake was light & flavorful, with a light chocolate frosting rolled in it with cherries & chocolate shavings (not overly sweet). We were all pleasantly surprised. The assortment of cookies was good too; decorated shortbread & sugar cookies. These desserts were MUCH better than the pies & I appreciated the bakery going the extra mile to make it right with my mom.
