Coffee was okay, chai tea was from a concentrate and not homemade (Oregon Chai) so I was disappointed by that, and also by the fact that they don't make their own bagels (they're from Roanoke Bagel Co.). The drinks were way overpriced for how tiny they were.

Quaint place. The pastries look really really good. The sandwich and soup I got was not spectacular but good. I'd say they skimp on the meat. I do have to mention a huge pet peeve of mine is dirty tables. It didn't seem like the table I sat at had been wiped down in a long time... Possibly all day or yesterday. I don't like sticky fingers before I eat. This is my first time eating here and I'd definitely come back and try one of their other sandwiches before making a final decision.

The staff is friendly enough. The blueberry scone was bland and (after being warmed) had a taste of char. The almond milk latte had over steamed milk. My friend seemed to enjoy her bacon, egg, and cheese pizza, however.

Just passing through Roanoke. I had a red eye and a cup of curried veggie soup. The soup came with a fresh baked roll. All excellent! The atmosphere is perfect, airy, open, and funky but still professional. I wish we had a place like this in Huntsville, AL. I think it goes well with the college town vibe. My only complaint is they use lots of styrofoam. I would love to see them at least use paper to go coffee cups.

Without question, OtR is my go-to lunch place downtown. I work nearby and frequently walk here. Their bread is always fresh. The desserts are to die for. The staff is friendly. The specials are creative and rotate. It is a little sad to see specials never resurface, like the pimento grilled cheese. So good. Their tomato cheddar soup is perfect. Their pizza is fluffy and fat. Their cakes are sweet, fresh, and flavorful. I can't think of any beef about this place besides the fact that they close at 4. I'd love to have dinner somewhere this cozy and casual. Forget Panera. On the Rise all day.

Wonderfully warm atmosphere. The smell of fresh baked bread instantly reminds you of being at Grandma's while she was baking. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is extremely nice. You can instantly tell that everything baked here is made with love and pride. This is the best place in Roanoke to get amazing fresh baked bread.

We FINALLY got a chance to stop by this wonderful bakery in Roanoke. We visited the downtown location at about 11:30 am and while we were gawking at all the food options, several people walked in behind us and lined up to be served. So... this place is pretty popular, even though it is relatively small and tucked away in the city market area of downtown. That let us know right away that the food here must be great. The atmosphere is lovely and cozy. The people are kind and helpful and the food we saw looked amazing. We took some treats to go for later in the day and were not disappointed. The lunch options include cold and hot sandwiches, soup and pizza - with many bakery items for sale. We got the feeling that they make a limited amount every day and when it's gone... it's gone. So if you find a favorite item, stop by early to grab it or you might be out of luck. Everything we had was fresh and prepared very well. It's hard to find a really good local bakery that knows their stuff. Stop by and support this business. Your tongue will thank you!

July 16th, 2015 I have visited On the Rise in the past years and have always been very satisified with the service and food. I was looking forward to a dessert today and took along a friend. One costumer was being waited on at the register. After the staff finished the transaction she never moved away to help me, another staff member came from the back and walked down behind the counter, never spoke. I had to ask her directly to help me. She handed the bag to the staff at the register. I was asked for the money, she handed me my change. I had to reach across 3/4 of the width of the counter to pick up my purchase. I've never written a review before , but I just can't ignore this behavior by a business to a customer. I would think the owners would like to know how their employees are treating customers. The one star is for the service not the excellent scone:)

No decaf espresso for the espresso drinks, though they did tell us which place could serve us some. Great (off too large)baked goods-brownies, cookies, etc. Also cakes + breads to take away.
