We were looking for an authentic Mexican place Not Peruvian, not Salvadoran--Mexican. This is probably the best I have had in the area. Likely almost the best I have ever eaten. The pastries and desserts are plentiful and fun to try. My only caution is that this is in a strip mall off Rt. 1, not a fine dining establishment. So don't expect a relaxing sit down restaurant. There is seating inside, but this is not a large restaurant. However, if what you are after is tasty Mexican food,

Some of the best tacos in the dmv. This is a taco shop and bakery you just visit! GF and I had the carnitas, carne asada, lengua, and Pastor tacos (I listed them in order of most to least favorite) and they were all amazing. We also got the Cuban/mexi torta, highly recommend. Horchata on point! All of that for 25 buckaroos. Full and happy belly. Thanks Alicia! We will return (especially to try the menudo and baked goods).

Don't let the humble exterior fool you. Although it's situated in a mediocre strip mall, what you'll find inside La Mexicana is first-rate Mexican food and AMAZING baked goods in a clean, simple setting. There are no waiters. Orders are taken at the counter and the food is served fresh to your table or to go. There is no alcohol and no fountain drinks, but what the place lacks in amenities, it makes up for in quality. You will not leave hungry.

I went to get tacos en chicken burrito, and it was delicious. Amazing authentic Mexican flavor. At the end I couldn’t decide what to get as dessert. They have so many good stuff like tres leches cake, rice pudding, cookies... everything is delicious. I highly recommend it. Plus the people at the register are very polite and super nice. Best Mexican I've had. But be careful. When I left a cash tip, so marked $0 on the receipt, they added a 50% tip onto the receipt. And then pretended not to understand me when I called to confront them. So I would say only use cash here.

Ever since I moved from Texas I have tried looking for an authentic Mexican plate of Menudo. I’ve been here for almost two years and have only now come to find this wonderful place. The owners are very welcoming and ready to discuss the menu in case of any questions. Also had a taco and it was perfection. Highly recommend!!!

'Hole in the wall', but well lit. The food was OK. I fault to understand why the fajita beef was better than the carne asada (?). The guacamole, which must be paid for as a side, was ordered with the fajitas, was the tastiest part of the meal. Refried beans and yellow rice were fine. The Carne Asada eeds a lot of work. Really disappointed, but the lady at the counter was nice.

Holy Guacamole ! Their food is absolutely delicious. I come from California where Mexican culture is everywhere and so is food. Amazing! I have eaten tacos from across United States. By far the seasoning for the meat in the tacos is the greatest I have ever eaten. The taco speaks for itself once you take a bite. Also the homemade sauce is a must to be placed upon the heavenly taco.

When i was making a purchase, i felt the cashier was looking at my bank card wired. Right after he hand me back my card. His phone was facing me and it flashed. I ignored it and waited for my food. When he called my order as he was handing me the food same thing accrued again. I knew for some reason he was taking a picture of me. I addressed it right away and he denied it. He kept showing me the home screen on his phone telling me that he wasn't taking a picture. I told him if you don't believe that this is my bank card the right way is to ask for my ID. NOT TAKING A PICTURE. I'm really disappointed .

The worst restaurant, I ordered steak torta and it tasted like refrigerator and old. I asked for non spicy for my kids tortas and they seemed to have cooked it on the grill where they had previously cooked a spicy order. Went looking for bread and everything was old. Eat at your own risk.

The best tacos I've had! I've been visiting this place for about 7 years now and it never failed to impress. Yelp tells me I have 17 check-ins here and I think that may not be all! But don't let that take away from everything else they have to offer. I love their tortas too. And i know it's sad but I haven't tried anything else on their menu - that's how much I adore the items mentioned above. Their baked sweet and savory stuff is also good. Definitely recommended!

Food is okay, but the service is absolutely terrible. They make you feel bad for asking for salt. We mistakenly went up to grab an order (it was literally the exact same order, but wrapped to go) and the lady kept talking bad about us to the other person. I couldn't understand why she was so rude just because we stood up and politely apologized once we realized it was someone else's.

Pretty much always delicious. My wife LOVES their Tortas. Always good, and as close to the taco shops in San Diego that we both grew accustom to. We had them cater my birthday, which included a cake (since after all, they're also a bakery and not just a great place for mexican food). Food was a hit with everyone!

Frequent customer always order tortas without onions but today they messed up and put onions on it then took it to the back of the kitchen to pick out the onions by hand apparently because when I got home I could taste the onion inside it. Didn't feel like driving back and complaining so here's the review instead. Poor customer service

My wife and I had moved here from Cali a few months ago. We've been looking for a good Mexican joint. This is by far the best spot we have found. We love Mexican food and this place is point. If your looking for a good spot then you've just found it. I wish we had found this place sooner. We got asada tacos and asada burrito. We also got a side of beans and rice. I would say my only regret was the frijoles were missing their queso fresco that most restaurants do in Cali.

How is this place not packed all the time. Food is so good. The torta is huge. Big enough that half is all you need and save the other half for later. The sopes are messy but so worth it.

Fantastic place for Mexican tacos. They have all kinds that you can order, in addition to standard Mexican fare (burritos, sandwiches, desserts). I recommend the carnitas, steak, and fish varieties of you're going for tacos. Would also get the tres de leche here. It's an excellent dessert and nice way to finish off your meal. Not much seating inside though so beware if you're coming with a big group of people.

If you like authentic Mexican food, I think you'll be hard pressed to find better. As a San Diegan I know the struggle of finding good Mexican food--this wonderful panadería makes tacos and tortas that are as good as at home. Fresh bread and good meat were the highlights but all the flavors were spot on. HIGHLY recommended and I may be back before my visit in DC is through!

This place is a hidden gem. I've never had a bad meal. The"green" sauce can be hotter than heck but it's a "10". Carnitas tacos are the best. Burrito's are monstrous and wonderful. The refried beans are great just ask for cheese on them. Friendly owner and fresh food. This is a place you gotta try...and I do like the new table and chairs!!!

Best. Tacos. I am a purist when it comes to the delicious envelopes of meaty goodness from Mexico. Double corn tortillas, assertive meats, white onion, tons of cilantro, and finally doused with a healthy squeeze of lime. If this is you, GET HERE NOW! The DC area has a lot of sloppy Mexican food but very few great taquerias but this one is just a beauty. From the beef tongues' soft and delicate taste to the salty, porky goodness of their carnitas will keep you coming back for more.

This place is a hole in the wall place that serves really tasty food. I got the 2 tamales with rice, refried beans and salad. Also, I got one pupusas filled with cheese, pork and served with a side of slaw. Let me tell you, the rice and beans were the best I have ever had! Everything is made to order and the prices were very reasonable. They have been featured on NPR, cheap eats and DC food. They are very close to Mount Vernon and Fort Belvoir.

A hidden gem... a bit divey, but oh so good. Awesome selection of traditional mexican dishes to include tortas and menudo. The soft tacos with a choice of lengua, carne asada, chicken , and chorizo are some of the best in town. Limited seating for dine in but you can call ahead for take-out!
