As you know, we don't usually stop to give tatings when they are good and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Bakery belongs to the category of German restaurant.
My party of 6 plus a baby went on Saturday morning for breakfast/brunch. There was a wait for a table, but the hostess was accurate with the 20 min estimate. As soon as we sat down one of the waitresses noticed we had a hungry baby with us and ask if he’d like a plate of fruit. We said yes and she brought it out right away, so he didn’t have to wait for the rest of the food to cook. So nice! And the food was amazing! My sister and I had the steak and eggs. Steak was cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back!
It was a good restaurant, and I even took some sweets. Plus I discovered the German-style sausages. The pancake is huge. ** warning they cutoff pancakes after 11 am on Saturday and Sunday. so go early weekends or go weekdays for all-day pancakes. I will be back in the future for sure.
This is a busy place but worth the wait. The authentic food was delicious and the portions are huge.
Food was decent, but not great by any means. Half sandwiches are only 50 cents cheaper than a whole sandwich but we didn't find that out until the bill was given to us- we would have rather ordered a whole and take home leftovers. To top it off there was a fly zapper right beside our table. The smell / sound of flies burning to death while we ate was not appreciated.
Great breakfast. More than enough food. Awesome service.
Pastry dough was so good in our apple turnovers and blueberry Danish. I felt the blueberry was really sweet and my partner felt the apple wasn't sweet enough lol so it's probably just personal preference! The merengue was different from any I've had before, it was flaky. Even in the morning the bakery was busy! Next time we will get some fresh bread!
Terrible food! Too salty & dry! I almost choked to death on a foreign object in my Schnitzel. Oh, and all the waitress had to say was "Hahaha, that never happens".
Food and service we're good, though the space could use some love.
Great service and Great food. A must for brunch if you visit Fredericksburg. The wait was a little bit and the place was packed; however that is to be expected at a place with great food
We always ate here, but never again. Our breakfast came out cold, eggs bacon biscuits. We sent the eggs back, they came back too quick to be made to order. Guessing most food is pre cooked, the orange slice was cold like it should have, only item at the right temp. Will eat at the airport hanger from now on.
We came for a mid morning Breakfast and we weren’t disappointed at all. We did have to wait about 30 minutes and the food and service we received was well worth it! I highly recommend this place . Just keep in mind that there will be somewhat of a wait
Went in to pick up several German style pastries. Even on Monday the place is crowded. The pigs in blankets and the German Style pastries filled with fruit are huge and really tasty. A stop is worth the time and effort.
Breakfast food was great! I had the eggs florentine and fell in love. German pancakes are served before 11 am so get there early, these are a must. Waffles are big and fluffy. Bakery items looked so delicious.
I always make a stop here when I'm in town. Food is wonderful, service is great. One of my favorites in town.
Took my family here for breakfast, and we were not impressed. The food was extremely bland and overpriced. The German food was not authentic at all, and the amount of flies we fought off our table was nasty! They sat us next to a bug zapper! It was covered in dead bugs literally a foot away from where u eat (gross) the food wasn't worth the prices or the wait. We left hungry and ended grabbing food down the street. Because who can eat surrounded by a bunch of dead flies!
A fav place for quality German food. Visited on a Thursday. Quick and friendly service. Prices are reasonable.
Love the feel of this restaurant. I would call the breakfast food & prices "average." Nothing to rave about. Our eggs were over cooked. But the sausage & hash browns were great. The biscuits were also delicious. We never tried the danishes but they looks amazing.
Enjoyed my breakfast, my mother ordered pancakes though and they were more crepes than pancake and rubbery.
Food and service is excellent. Going again tomorrow morning. Great prices and baked goods as well.
Yummy German pancakes. Quick, friendly service.
Just Divine! I had this schnitzel and German potato fries and spaetzle! Will definitely order that again! The bakery is to die for yummy. The eclair is about the size of your hand and so yummy.
Good food but very busy so go early.
Very good food. Wonderful friendly staff.
Good burgers. Great dessert. Fair service.
These German pancakes are the biggest pancakes I’ve ever been served. Went in for breakfast. Food is delicious. Service is GREAT!!! When we visit Fredericksburg, we always stop here for breakfast!!!
Food was good, but the wait staff rather rude.
Absolutely a must do while in Fredericksburg! Loved every bit.
Great breakfast. Very fast and kind wait staff. Definitely recommend. Gets packed very fast though.
Lunch specials are a must! Food came out promptly but my order was wrong or else I would have given 5 stars. I reccomend the schnitzel special with spaetzle! Yum!
Waited almost an hour for breakfast on a cold rainy morning and it was so worth it! Great place the end the weekend in Fredericksburg.
What's not to love? HUGE portions, GREAT food and a bakery. You'll waddle out.
Great authentic German food. Awesome bakery too!
Had the chicken mushroom burger-and it was great. But, even though I'm not normally a french fries person, I think the seasoned fries were the best I've ever had. WOW!!
We really enjoyed our visit here. The food and service were great. The staff was friendly and helpful.
We came for the promise of a good breakfast and stayed for all the delicious pastries. Seriously, I ordered a smaller breakfast than usual so I could have one of these beauties. Stunned by the amount of delicious looking pastries to choose from. I wish I could've ordered one of each. I think the price of my OJ a bit high but whatever, 5 stars for the excellent Danish skills. So worth it.
This bakery was recommended to me by some fellow campers when we were in the Fredericksburg area. I was wanting some German bread that was authentic and freshly baked. Old German Bakery and Restaurant met that need! The property is very quaint. It sits right along the Fredericksburg drag known as Main Street. It's been in the same location for many, many years. When I arrived late morning, delicious breakfast smells hit me as soon as I walked in the door! Looking around I could see patrons enjoying everything from eggs and bacon to sausage and pancakes, toast, sweet pastries and coffee. The bakery case was up front and a little to the right of the main seating area. There was a small area of space with the cash register/hostess area nearby. A young woman was busy taking care of a customer at the cash register. I loved the vibe of this café as there were just as many local workers as there were tourists. The seating area was quite full however there was no one waiting at this point. I believe they were about to swing into their lunch menu but sadly since I wasn't there to have a meal I didn't explore that aspect any further. (Next time we are in the area we will definitely come in for breakfast)! I studied the bakery case which had several varieties of authentic German pastries. Some shelves along the wall behind the pastries were the varieties of bread. I could see they had a slicer as well which I always appreciate. They had white bread along with about four different styles of pumpernickel bread. I purchased a loaf of German 3-Seed Bread and a loaf of German Pumpkin Seed bread and had them sliced. Even though I had a box full of baked goods since the ones here were traditional to the German culture, I decided I would go ahead and purchase four of the pastries as well. Schnecken looked much like a large cinnamon roll, with lots of raisins in all the nooks and crannies and a light glaze over the entire pastry. A "Crump" consisted of a pastry below a thick (like an inch) layer of Bavarian cream, covered with a pastry and then the whole thing covered in powdered sugar. Looked kind of like a cream puff on steroids! The Pecan Covered Cookie is exactly that-the difference is there were so many pecan pieces on it you could barely see the cookie. Last but not least I also bought a Schneeballen. Wasn’t overly sweet but a very rich, buttery, tasting pastry shaped like a big knot. I’m hopeful I got the names correct but I will tell you there were NOT a lot of options left at 11AM-I would say to ensure the best variety of pastries-go early! I can’t even imagine what it’s like on the weekends as it was plenty busy during the week! So you may be wondering why four stars and not five. I stood at the bakery case and the cashier stood very close by but never offered to come over and wait on me. I went over to her and requested assistance. She didn’t seem too pleased to be taken from her post. However, by the time I arrived at the cash register to pay she was much more pleasant. Everything I purchased is absolutely delicious and we will definitely go back when we return!
Geat food! Go hungry or split a meal. Friendly staff
Great authentic food! Salad was so fresh you could taste it, the burger was juicy and tasted great, the schnitzel was so good with the sauce on it and the French fries were amazingly crunchy with yummy batter! They didn’t mind to seat us even though they closed soon after. Bonus: a bakery in the same room to grab a pastry on your way out while you explore the town.
We have been here several times and every time we have had wonderful food and service. Can’t wait for our next visit.
No complaints. My rouladen tasted good and ample portions of food. A must when you are in the area.
Had their Jagerschnitzel special, it was delicious. My daughter got the bratwurst and said it was very good. Generous portions.
Great liver and onion, nice pasteries, great atmosphere. I’d avoid really busy times like noon for lunch on Saturday.
Delicious fresh German food! Bakery is on the smaller side, but amazing choices.
It wasn't a good meal despite what the long line was indicating. The burger was covered in mustard and had a strange taste. The corn beef was old and salty. There are plenty of other places to go.
A lot of people, very busy but it's the good place for a breakfast or a brunch. It is very good and personal are nice.
The servers, specially Dustin were really nice and attentive. Plus the food was really good. I would recommend this place hands down.
This place was amazing an delicious. Wait staff was extremely good an friendly. I would recommend this place to everyone.
Driving thru this town it's one of the few places to get breakfast and is really good to find a place to eat that also has a bakery in, but breakfast is extremely basic and is platter very simple... basic flavored with salt and pepper.
Really cute place, great food, portions are huge. Only bad thing was there was a lot of flies inside, which they can't really help since people are coming and going constantly, but still. Would still recommend for sure.
The Old German Bakery and Restaurant has the best breakfast in Fredericksburg. Fast, friendly service along with numerous breakfast menu items makes for delicious and nutritious food to start the day. You definitely must eat here!
Service and food were good. Belgian waffle was fabulous and omlettes are big. Biscuits looked like they were heated from frozen. Fresh pastries looked delish, but I was full and didn't try them.
The Rueben Sandwich is absolutely delicious. Large portions. Great menu to choose from.
Came here for breakfast. The wait was very long (30+ mins) and the wait for food was even worse. I didn't understand how a group of four people who sat down after us (2people) got all their food before we did. They were done eating by the time we got ours. My omelet was delicious but a bit under seasoned. There was way too much cheese on it. The German pancake was delicious as well (plain and with syrup) but way too greasy. I'm not sure if that how it's supposed to be. Overall service and food were alright. I wish I could have tried their bakery items. Maybe next time.
Food was great! Hostess was great! Our waiter intentionally ignored us. I ordered chocolate milk with my breakfast order, yet received it fifteen minutes after receiving my food. We made eye contact three times with our waiter while trying to get his attention. He ignored us. Did not address us until the elderly ladies beside us grabbed his arm and made him talk to us when he delivered their food. This is when we we're able to receive our drinks. Very crowded environment, but again amazing food.
Great park and fantastic hiking. Be sure to make reservations on line the park fills up and only ba set number may come in at any one time. The park was not crowded at all. Hiking for all age and experience levels. Bring water and sunscreen not allot of shade at times.
Amazing place to just visit when you are in town! If you don't like crowds dont come here. This place is usually packed and if you want most things from the bakery get there early!
Amazing food and nice staff. Had the liver and it was outstanding!
I had the House Schnitzel. It was good, but a bit on the bland side. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Clean restrooms.
We went there twice in one trip! Delicious German food. German pancakes were only available in the mornings, so a repeat trip was necessary. Even though it looked like a long wait, it wasn't at all! Service is very quick, so the flow seems to go quickly!
Very traditional when it comes to an old fashioned restaurant. It was a little tight but the food was good and the service at the table descent. However it took several minutes to check out at the counter.
This place has good food. Down fall no changing table for babies.
We did a take out order and went out to Lady Bird park. We had chicken patty on the most delicious bread ever. Also potato salad as a side dish. Our first visit in Fredericksburg.
This is a great place to try out. It is a little packed and the wait can be long but worth it. The food was amazing. The cinnamon rolls are wonderful as is their homemade bread. They make their smoked pork chops taste like bacon. They are moist and delicious. The Belgian Waffles are soft and fluffy. Great service. Only downside is they make you use little packets of butter to butter everything yourself instead of buttering it yourself. Including your toast (which I hate more than anything) so be prepared and butter quickly before it gets cold. Other than that pet peeve it is a great place to check out.
Very busy during popular holidays and you know its gotta be the best in town when you see local law enforcement there
Food was great if you like German and peaches. Went during lunch and had to wait 20 min to be seated. Free tea with meal.
Very busy place, being German I have certain expectations when someone uses that as a description for their food. The potatoe pancakes did Not meet my expectations and the german pancake was ok but could be improved a great deal. The rest of the breakfast was standard fare. The wait staff were great.
I had the Sauerbraten, which could be explained as “just roast beef” but that would be so wrong. It’s really good. And the red cabbage! Get the red cabbage
Bit of a wait to dine in but it was definitely worth it. Great place to eat and the baked goods were awesome.
The food was okay and the service was great. But don't expect traditional German style food. The red cabbage tasted like BBQ baked beans, they only serve bread on the weekends, and they don't serve beer.
Well other than being over commercialized, you can get a taste of German cooking , but not the full flavor. The meat in the schnitzel and sauer braten was to dry the gravy insufficient lacking the right mushrooms. But hey, my mother or grandmother aren't the head cooks. The red cabbage was good .
The sweet items were really good, if not food for you. Tried the "authentic" German potato pancakes for lunch. They come with the usual applesauce and we found both to be very bland. The pancakes seemed to come from frozen patties and the traditional cucumber salad I got to go with was just a creamy dill sauce. Disappointed.
Great food and service every time
Awesome food, great price. And wonderful service, definitely will go back!!
I wish I could give them a long and drawn out review but AWESOME PLACE, FOOD & STAFF says it all!! We were in town for 2 days and we went for breakfast there each morning. Keep up the good work and please change nothing it is perfect!! With a little bit of help your pancakes can look like this!
Amazing aromas of fresh baked bread. Our meals were large servings of sauerkraut ,schnitzel and of course a ruben sandwich. Take home a box of fruit danishes.
The german potatoes, and potato salad was great! We ordered bratwursts, swiss burger, and omelet loaded with veggies. Also, tried their coffee cake and raisin almond cake from the bakery.Great taste for good prices.
Excellent and authentic homemade German food! Inside and decor is not fancy and very casual, but every item we tried was absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend.
Great breakfast and pastries. The German pancake was huge and thin just amazing.
In the middle of Fredericksburg it has a variety of tastes. It specializes in German cuisine, but accommodates Mexican and American. It also has a bakery in it at reasonable prices. The portions are generous, I made 2 meals out of my Bratwurst Sandwich.
I would be way over weight if I lived down the street from this place. Such great food and fair prices
Excellent breakfasts and home-style lunches every day. Weekend specials create quite a line out front, but worth the wait. Delicious German baked bread and pasteries.
A very fun place to eat! Large portions well-prepared with a sense of country dining! They also have a bakery.
So I originally gave this place 3 stars because it was very crowded and I didn't like being sat by the restrooms to eat..Very busy!!! Fast service, very crowded seating area. However, I am currently 8/2/2019 in Germany and this place (Old German Bakery & Restaurant) is 200% better than anyplace in Germany.. In Germany the service is much slower, you can enjoy your food, there is no refills, no ice, your server is getting paid a full wage not to make you feel rushed as soon as you get your food. This place (OGB&R) has A/C and maybe 1 fly. In actual Germany flies and bees all over your food. Still was not happy about being sat by the restrooms or elbow to elbow with everybody in the room.
There food is amazing as well as there pastry. I would highly recommend stoping by if your in the area
Decent food but please update the space and utilize storage for extra chairs instead of random places. The set up of chairs and tables need to be more thought out as it's a maze of bumping into people just to go to the restroom. We will not visit again
The cherry covered crepes were fantastic. The Belgian waffle was crunchy on the outside and soft and tasteful on the inside. Great breakfast for the beginning of a day.
Everything was amazing! From the coffee to the pastries, it was all perfect and tasted so fresh! Service was quick and made sure we had everything we needed. Had a great meal and took home fresh pastries and a loaf of bread. Definitely our new favorite for breakfast when we're in town!
SMELLS as good as it tastes. You can smell their baked breads down the street!! Mmm. This is a hopping bakery and lunch spot for all the locals. So jump in line grab a table, grab a pastry, and pick your fave German food fair or pancakes or hamburgers. I definitely reccomend the burgers served with fresh toppings -leaf lettuce, tomatoes and thick bacon and burger all on homemade buns!!! If you want fresh pastries of loaf breads they have those too. But they go fast.
It was great. The schnitzel is really good
Great atmosphere. Good service. Good but somewhat pricy food. Sausage platter was excellent, consisting of 3 different tasty sausages served over a generous bed of sauerkraut.
Delicious food and fast service. Their breakfast tacos are really good and big!
Best kolachi I've ever eaten. Breakfast was underwhelming but the chicken pretzel sandwich was better than any chicken sandwich has a right to be.
Very good. Right on spot with the German taste.. Fresh food. Bread and pastry is very good.
Great for a cheap/quick breakfast in Fredericksburg. They have the main breakfast staples but of course plenty of German style dishes. You can't go wrong here.
Great food and service. Highly recommend
Excellent place. Delicious food and decent prices.
Oh my goodness the scrumptious pastries! I just wanted to load the car up ! Will definitely be back !
It's very plain sysco type food. Nothing special here. People show up because it is here. Portions are inconsistent. Dry fruit and veggies. Clogged salt shackers due to poor cleaning methods. No manager walking the floor.
Loved the hamburger and the schnitzel with mushrooms and gravy. Good attention by the staff. Thanks!
Very busy and very warm and friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you make it to Fredericksburg. The German food is delicious. The schnitzel was very tasty with just enough spices. The potato pancakes are scrumptious as well.
I'm sure the food would've been great. Unfortunately, we didn't get that far. After asking if they had a gluten-free menu or options, the waitress told us she doesn't "really know what that is" and "you'll need to tell me what you can eat." We appreciated her honesty BUT her tone made clear she had no desire to learn or make sure our food was safe. This was an obvious risk for an allergic reaction, so we left. Look, I understand normal small towns in Texas not knowing about gluten allergies but not in a touristy town like Fredericksburg. The rest of the restaurants we visited the last few days were on-point. Not this one. The staff at the Old German Bakery, including wait staff and cooks, need basic food service industry training on food allergies. You can't mess about with this stuff. Time to get with the times, folks.
Can be busy on weekends. Homey and basic food served in a local city cafe environment. Some German style fare on the menu. Bread style bakery goods. Good sausage rolls. When they are sold out...they are out, no apologies, so come early and enjoy.
Such a cute little place to stop at. First my husband and I love anything and everything in Fredericksburg and anything German. This place is the best to stop in and get some food at. It was so delicious! Oh my gosh it was great! It came out fast and it was very hot and fresh. All the food we ordered, for our children and ourselves was fantastic! When we checked out we got a pastry from them called a crump. It’s like an elephant ear filled with this delicious vanilla pudding! That was the best part! We can see ourselves come back here for a lunch or a dinner.
German chicken salad is the best I ever had! Fruity favor with a hint of nutty pecans. Deliciousness!!
Good food but definitely not fast food. About 35 min to get food after ordered. Friendly staff.
I eat here at least once a week and usually the food is hot and really good. But today I must say it was anything but. I ordered a fried pork chop with mashed potatoes and corn. First of all I had to wait quite sometime to be waited on and for my food. When it did arrive the pork chop was pretty much nothing but breading. Then there were big potato chunks in the mashed potatoes. And finally the corn was cold as if it had been in a refrigerator. I mentioned it to the waiter and he brought me out a bowl of corn that was all but boiling. It had to sit for 10 minutes before I could even take a bite. I hope this will not continue as I really enjoy eating here.........Usually
Amazing! The gravy is delicious, the potato pancakes are bangin', and the German pancakes are literally the best thing in the world!
Good traditional breakfast. They keep up with their rushes surprisingly well for their small staff. Often their dishes have that little something extra that makes a meal hit the spot. I do wish they'd change brands of coffee as their food far outstrips it but that's just nit picking.
german food... yummy. i was so stuffed. looking forward to coming back with my friends. prices are reasonable i would say.
Food is delicious but wait time is always at least 30 to 45 minutes and another 20 for food.
I love this old style German bakery. When I went it was a Saturday and it was packed full of people with a line down the block for their breakfast meal. I went for the baked goods but both look delicious.
Great place for breakfast. Portions are good, you won't leave hungry. Also offers baked goods and German breads. All really good!
Simply delicious! Fresh! Great prices! Great service!
Old German Bakery & Restaurant was awesome! It was very busy, but I was still taken care of quickly. I sat myself because there were tables open- they make a list if there is a wait. A server noticed me right away, asked if I had any allergies and brought me a high chair for my little one. Another server came right away with some fruit and colors for my daughter. Our food was great, and the first server noticed us when we were leaving and gave my little one a cookie. Everyone was very nice and efficient. The restaurant is on the main street 87/290 that has lots of shops and other restaurants. Great place to park and walk around.
Our trips to Fredericksburgh are never co.plete without Breakfast or lunch at the Old German Bakery and Restaurant! Their staff is friendly, their food is authentic, homemade Old Country German recipes and American food. Their pastries and breads are fabulous.
Spent a few days trying out the german food in F'burg. Thought it was all rather bland until the bakery. The food here includes large portions. I ordered potato pancakes, which were very much like the real thing. The danishes were perfect. I personally loved the link sausages. The staff is lovely. I will dream of this place. A treasure.
Try the biscuits and gray! You will not regret it.
Did I mention the bf loves breakfast foods? We were visiting and because he knew Germans did breakfast right, he automatically wanted to come here for breakfast the first day! So much so that he rushed us out in the morning so we wouldn't miss the pancakes that they stopped serving at 11am! But I'm glad he did cause the place was packed!! Both days we were in town there was a wait outside with a ton of people! We waited about 30 mins or so for a table of 2 on a Saturday morning around 10:30am, granted it was Easter weekend! We ordered the German pancake - it was huge! The pictures don't do the thing justice cause it was as large as the plate! The texture was a little more dense and chewy than the normal American fluffy pancakes but we liked it! We ate the whole thing! The texture and flavor was great with some butter and syrup! I also had two eggs over easy, bacon strips and omg the hash browns! They were seasoned well crispy! I wanted more! My bf got the omelette, which was fluffy and good - Exactly what he expected. The coffee was fantastic and the orange juice was good. We thought this place was above average and can see why it gets so busy! We came back the next day to pick up some pastries at the bakery for our trip to Enchanted Rock - the sausage pastry was delicious! The cinnamon roll and apple pastry wasn't anything to rave about but it was still good! I would definitely come back next time we're in the area!
