I've driven by it so many times. But this once I met up with some colleagues for a lunch meeting. We had sandwiches and shared two slices of cake. Very cute inside. Sandwiches were good but the cakes display and selection was amazing.

Great selection of cakes and baked goods. And they're open late which is very nice. Their coffee is alright and the cake is alright too. Would be nice to have better (any) descriptions on some of the cakes. Layout is somewhat awkward; not quite a sit-down restaurant, but more than a coffee bar. But go there hungry and you'll be satisfied!

I am shocked, embarrassed, and incredibly saddened. My wife and I have been coming here for cake for years and today we decided to stop in for a quick breakfast before going to the dog park. We were seated and everything started fine but after we ordered our meals which were 2 breakfast platters, one having fruit, the food took about 30 minutes to finally get to us with no acknowledgement of the time by our server. When I finally got up and asked, I was told it would be a couple minutes longer. We finally got our food and it was generally just cold, the toast was unable to melt any butter and the eggs were very cold. When another server came by we asked and were told that they had issues in the kitchen with power and that they were having to move appliances around to try and cook. No mention of that had been made before hand. They did give us new toast. When we were done we received our bill and had found that the order of a platter with fruit had been made a side of fruit being $2 more. So we had been charged extra. So after fixing that and finally leaving we found out that another table had been given a discount for their wait but none was offered to us, likely due to the fact that I pointed out that if we had been communicated with while the issue was happening, we would have been happy to be patient. The part that makes me most sad is that we love their desserts. We have spent years bringing people who are from out of the area there to enjoy the best cake in town and this experience has left us embarrassed that someone we would refer here would experience this as well. We are sad to lose their cakes in our life but we will survive.

The place is small and in need of updating, but clean. The service was good. The prices are also good. I ordered the Reuben panini and my wife ordered the bean soup. The bean soup came in a large bowl and was tasty. The Reuben came with kettle chips and was also very good. The selection of cake for dessert was phenomenal and had at least 30 different choices. I chose Gerry's chocolate and my wife had the raspberry champagne cake. Each piece would have been enough for two people. A couple of women lunching were each taking a piece of cake home after lunch. I could see them nibbling on that all week. Oh, I almost forgot that they also had a selection of cheesecakes and different types of dessert bars. Great place for a dessert and lunch.

Wonderful food and their cakes are fantastic. Lunchtime, this place was packed. Only a five minute wait to be seated though. I had the vegetarian sandwich and lentil something soup topped off with a piece of chocolate ganache cake. A wonderful meal.

We didn't have to let it sit out or anything beforehand, it was ready to eat as soon as I picked it up, which is the way I've always thought it was everywhere but I've learned the hard way that at some places you have to leave the cake out for several hours before serving.Been going here for 4 years while at Willamette U.

Not a fan. The service was horrible. While the waitress was nice, she came to our table a total of 3 times. She didn't refill our water once. We also had to go up to the counter for our check after waiting about 15 minutes after finishing our food. The portions are also very small. If you order a meal there, be prepared to still be hungry at the end. Especially if you get a side of fruit. This is literally equal to a quarter of a thin orange slice. The taste of the food was hit or miss. My wife liked hers, mine was standard (not great, not horrible), and my sister's was bad. Avoid the lasagna unless you want soggy lasagna noodles with trace amounts of sauce and some bland, dry sausage. They get 2 stars because I heard the cake was delicious. But don't go there for a meal

I recognized there would probably be a wait coming here on mother’s day. I try not to be impatient, within reason. I waited half an hour in line and barely moved. I had to point out to the staff that there were people in line who wanted to be seated rather than have their orders to go. I shouldn’t have had to, it’s not my job. I left empty handed because I don’t have an hour to wait for a couple pieces of cake. I’m so disappointed. I want to like you guys so badly, please stop making it hard to!

Not quite the target audience for this place. The cake is great most of the time, unless you go at the end of the day and the cake has been in the case all day then it tastes dry. I had the tuna melt and it was good. The seating is rough if they are busy we were crammed in a little corner so that we didnt have to wait longer for a table.

You have to try all of their dessert selections! My group got 4 different cakes, and it seemed like each one was better than the last. This place maintains a small town cafe feel and it seemed like everyone knew each other and was very friendly. Their savory food items were spectacular as well. All around, a great place to eat and catch up with friends.

Have tried four different cakes so far and none have been good. Not carrot cake. Not red velvet. Not peanut butter cheese cake. Not chocolate. Possibly they are frozen and thawed? Not sure, but you’re better off at Costco if you want cake. And that’s sad.

Charming and historic. We pre-order big cookies and fancy bars for our family get togethers. They cut each item into fourths and separate them into little paper holders (on covered trays). Everyone pours over the variety trying different tastes! Special and fun and very delectable.

The place is well staffed, and competitively priced, considering they could easily command higher prices. Honestly surprised they haven’t expanded. This place has definitely lost its luster. I was really hoping that after Gerry Frank left it wouldn't change. Unfortunately it has. The cakes sometimes are not that great. Either dry, tasteless or waay to sweet The rudeness of some of the wait staff is pretty sad. We used to frequent the establishment.. Now we go less often. After each time we feel like going even less. To bad.

This place has the best cake in Salem. I highly recommend the ultimate cake as well as the chocolate fudge, the latter of which got me through many a difficult week of exams and homework at Willamette U. The restaurant is really cute and inviting and the staff are very friendly. They also have tasty sandwiches and delicious mac n cheese as well as very good cheesecakes, tea and coffee. Just make sure to get there early enough for dinner before they stop serving food. 10 out of 10 would recommend.

This was one of the places I remembered most from my first visit to Salem years ago. Not only was the Mounds like cake something that you would never forget the people were so welcoming each time I was brought there. I will say if I had to move back to the West Coast I would make my way here. The employees were great and every thing we had to eat was delicious.

Very friendly service. The lunch choices are many and are so well done. The desserts are very high quality, numerous and of great variety. So much so that my child choose a cake type he'd never had - coconut puff. This is a fun way to try new things! The interior is very clean and gives the impression of a European bistro though my use of the French word is incongruous with the fact it is modeled after a German cake store.

My wife and I came for desert because of people telling us how good it is. They were not kidding. I had carrot cake and my wife had chocolate peanut butter mousse tort. Both were awesome. We'd definitely recommend a stop here. We plan on stopping again to check out other things on their menu. We had excellent attentive service by a young waiter. No question about leaving a good tip for him. Smaller place but well worth the visit

Okay, the cake here is amazing! And that is why one should go here. The food however is not worth your money or time. I had a egg salad with curried chicken soup. The soup had not one piece of chicken and basically tasted like broth with curry powder added to it. My egg salad came on rye even when I asked for sourdough but I decided to just try it. It was so bland... it literally tasted like eggs mashed up with celery. No flavor or seasonings... and if there was mayo I couldn't tell. The orange slice was good! :) But really slow service; it took over 15 minutes for someone to realize we were done eating and waiting on a check. Again, the cake is great even if it is bought from a local bakery and that is why we will come here in the future.

I have read about this place for a while. I get to the Salem area occasionally for work. The staff was helpful and nice. I got three different slices of cake to go to try at home with the family. They were just ok. Maybe back it it's day this was THE place for cakes. But I have so much better cake at different bakeries in the Portland area. I was especially disappointed with the carrot cake. Too dry. Hardly any cream cheese in the frosting. Sorry but I won't be back.

This was our first time at this restaurant. We had a Fancy Quiche as well as the Rueben Panini. Both were delicious! Then we tried a slice of their Marionberry and the Poppyseed cakes. Both were delicious! The frosting is a bit sweet but the cake and filling were very tender and nummy! We have a few things on our list to try on our next visit.
