Wonderful gem - and obviously the best popovers. Great sandwiches and salads too. Love the sophisticated atmosphere and inviting seating (with a terrific outdoor patio). Highly recommended!
I really like Popovers a lot. The triple chocolate cake was truly a savoring experience. I just wish this butter cream frosting craziness would go away. I had to remove that part and trash it. The rest was light and moist and beautiful. Why put this heavy butter in it?
Nice place fast service Coffee is great and add your own everything make it your coffee the right way. Wrap with egg and chorizo Popover with egg and cheese Scrumptious hot fresh Both came with fruit Perfect breakfast
Perfect as always! Great coffee..Great food!
Great selection!
Service was great! Seating was challenging! Food was good! I would call it a remix expensive version of Panera bread!
Pastries are so fresh!
Great food but it is a little pricey
Nice food, good location and good price
If you want to order a cake for birthday, anniversary or for any special occasion then visit Popovers on the Square in Portsmouth, NH. It is one of the best bakeries in Portsmouth. I always order cake from this bakery. My favorite are Chocolate cake, Cheese cake, and Strawberry Gateau. They also have gluten free cakes but you have order in advance. They offer wide varieties of sandwiches, soups, and salads. I love Tomato Bisque and vegetation Panini. I cannot resist myself to have Tiramisu dessert whenever I go to Popovers. They have inside and outside sitting options. Enjoy Portsmouth down view with awesome food.
Was somewhat disapointed in our meal today as the food is usually excellent. We had a salad w a crab cake and the crab cake was luke warm and kind of mushy. We also got their banh mi sandwich which was way too spicy and somewhat small. The popovers were fine and those were the main draw. Would think about coming back again.
Visiting from Cali and we had popovers for the first time! Yummers!!
Their popovers are great. Had lunch a few times here, not as good as just plain popovers by themselves.
Very good food and nice atmosphere
delicious all around! great food and great coffee.
Best breakfast sandwich in town. Eat it there, as the bread isn’t nearly as good once they wrap it up. Doesn’t travel extremely well, so just do yourself a favor and scarf it down there!
We just had popovers with maple butter. YUMMY!!! All the baked goods looked good along with eyeing other people's food. Salads looked really good. I would go again if I have the chance and try more tastey treats. It was hoping on a Sunday afternoon. Coffee options looked good too.
Fast and delicious! Staff was very friendly, food was prepared quickly and was absolutely delicious. Outdoor seating was comfortable and relaxing. Will definitely be coming back on our next trip to Portsmouth!
We went for dessert and coffee. Although crowded/busy service was quick an pleasant. Had delicious chocolate eclair, cream puff and coffee.
Great food
I decided to go here for a nice bite to eat while wandering around Portsmouth for a family day out. I have been here before and had enjoyed the food previously. This time, I was particularly impressed by the service. The food was delicious, as per usual, but the service and staff were stellar. I had several plates to bring back to the table for my family and one of the chefs went out of his way to assist in bringing the plates over to the table. I went back to the counter to get my young daughter a cookie after her lunch and was greeted very pleasantly. The woman behind the counter was extra patient as my daughter waffled over which of the multitude of delicious treats she wanted to devour. When another staff member inadvertently started to box up our desserts and marred the frosting on the cookie, another staff member offered to just give us a brand new cookie! I refused because, an ugly cookie is still a cookie, you know?! All in all, while the prices are higher than I would like, though comparable to other Portsmouth eateries, the experience was great!
Enjoyed this cafe. First time trying a popover.
Food was great
Delightful and fun place to eat. Such a cute atmosphere and the food is delicious.
Really good food and iced coffee!
Great service
Tasty salad but $46 for two salads and an extra 3oz chicken, small fruit cup? Good thing coffee was free thanks to local bank. Had to wait for a seat.
Nice place, good food
Delicious freshly made food with some unique offetings
Awesome popovers, breakfast and coffee. Cant go wrong here.
Enjoyed a loaded Popover with egg, cheese, bacon & potatoes. Downright deliciously filling! Also had an alcoholic drink of Tito's vodka, blueberry syrup & lemonade- Soooo refreshing!
This is a great place for dessert!! I will go here whenever I’m in the center of Portsmouth for a slice of cake, it’s a weakness. They are known for popovers but I’m not a fan of them. I guess they used to have lobster popovers but I’ve never seen those on the menu. Those sounds delicious if they did have them!
I love this place! We eat breakfast here all the time. The food, service and staff are great and the owners are amazing!
Great little cafe w delicious breakfast items and excellent coffee. The have lunch too but I didn't try that side of the menu.
Very good
Had lunch at this spot with a half and half of soup and salad. Cute window seats to watch the town go by! Would recommend the tomato soup.
Been there a few times and the food (and staff) has always been great. Gluten free options available as well
Great Popovers. The other food is good, too, but I love the Popovers.
Good, often busy.
The coffee was weak but the baked goods were delicious. Wish they had more gluten free options.
Great breakfast sandwiches. Good spot for a quick meal.
Great desserts
Best coffee shop in town. The popovers are very good, make sure you ask for the maple butter.
Great place to grab dessert after a movie
CULINARY, CONFECTIONS...OMG
Oh my gosh, they have got the best choices of ice cream! As well as yogurt. Friendly staff, tasty ice cream!
The BEST poppers ever. They had all kind of great good, baked goods, and good coffee.
We love coming in here, especially at Christmas time eating a warmed popover & a cup of cocoa!!!!!
Great egg in a popover sandwich. Pricey but worth it.
Popovers is great bet for good desserts. The carrot cake is an amazing choice. Perfectly dense and not too sweet.
We always stop in Portsmouth on our way thru to visit family in Maine! Popovers is our favorite breakfast spot. The coffee is great and the popovers... well, they are just addictive! The outdoor seating is nice for people watching. The menu is varied and everything we've tried is quite good.
Nice cafe in downtown Portsmouth- recommend for a coffee and snack!
Cream puff has a thin layer of chocolate on the inside of the pastry, keeping the puff puffy while adding a layer of decadence. It's so divine that I was slightly embarrassed eating it in public .Fruit tart is also stunning. The subtly sweet cream isn't just a way to adhere the fruit to the pastry. It's a substantial layer that complements the crunchy short crust and perfectly glazed fruit. Mine had a generous topping of the usual berries (not bland! just commonplace), but also included kiwi and pineapple! I could just eat the pineapple all day long. My service dog really enjoyed her beef-flavored cookie, which we purchased at the checkout. Otherwise, great gimp-friendly bathroom (would benefit from a wipe down, but nothing terrifying) and lots of comfy indoor and outdoor seating.
Great sandwiches, soups, pastries and coffees. Right in the center of Portsmouth, has outside sidewalk seating in the summer.
Good but I like my popovers warm.
Great food, nice place.... amazing people..
Good food, limited menu.
Really tasty
Happened across this place on Google. Hands down, THE BEST cold brew coffee I have ever had. I thought the cup sitting on the counter was a Guinness somebody ordered. It had a crazy head on it and looked amazing. Bold, unique flavor, without being overbearing. A very refreshing stop. Make a detour!
It is one of the best places everyone dhould go to in Portsmouth. Lots of gluten free options. Spectacular!
We were a large group that went at lunch time. I did find the staff to be extremely accommodating for us and going above board to make sure that we where are served and taken care of. Even with a group of 13, they smiled when we asked for Separate Checks. I know how hellacious that can be to wait staff. As far as the food goes, I don't find it anything that I would write home about. But I'm just pickier than some. Everybody else enjoyed their meals very much. I give them five stars for accommodating all of us
Check this place out. Great food...desserts. Everything is good. Go there on Sunday morning to get a coffee, bloody Mary and read the paper or surf the net. Awesome mix of people frequent this place. Great food and conversations.
Always a favorite. Never fails. The staff is truly exceptional and accommodating. The popovers are definitely my favorite!...but the oatmeal with berries is also delicious! And I love their great coffee selection! It is great to find a dog friendly place. I like to park on the back street in the neighborhood by the bank...makes it so that you dont have to cross the street, just turn the block. Enjoy!!
The location of this restaurant is fantastic. The interior is striking and the exterior has a patio where they allow a dog to sit out with you while you have your meal. This is a real treat in the city like Portsmouth. The sandwiches and quesadillas that we had were excellent. The price was nothing to write home about but overall it was a positive experience. As a bonus they have it clean washroom.
Excellent Bakery and lovely trendy decor in a bustling location. Great on the go or meet up.
Popovers are awesome! We ordered a scrambled egg in a popover. It tasted great, especially with the cheese! We also ordered a plain popover with maple butter which was very good. The eclair was pretty good, as well, but not the cannoli which tasted a bit bland. Prices were very reasonable. Would highly recommend this place in the center of historic Portsmouth
Iced hot chocolate....omg.
Popovers will excite your tastebuds if you eat here. With their affordable meals that are quite yummy. Their is no doubt about it, popovers in Portsmouth is one of the best restaurants. Not to mention you can just popover.
Had late lunch before going to Strawbery Banke Museum. They had a long queue when we came but the service was quite fast. We ordered Hot Tea (English Breakfast), Popover, Clam Chowder, Turkey Sandwich, Eclair and Canoli. The Clam Chowder (served with mini popover) was great and the portion is big (for me). Turkey sandwich came with chips, the toast breas itself was tasty and the turkey & veggie were fresh and delicious. The popover is a must try, spread it with the maple butter, taste just awesome. The Eclair and Canoli were just okay.
Friendly staff, delicious food!
Great place for breakfast or just coffee and pastries. Lots of gluten free options, though the kitchen isnt totally gluten free they were very careful when I was there. They even had a little "allergy" marker for our plate. Good service and I'll definitely visit again.
Delicious Popovers!
We went for cinnamon rolls and we're given something like a scone nothing like we're expecting
Wonderful staff, including Kristen and "Joey".
I ordered a chocolate cake for my husband’s birthday from Popovers. It was SO good & SO fresh. One of the best we’ve ever had. I would order all my cakes from Popovers now so on. Thank you.
Good food like really good food highly recommend
Staff wasn’t that friendly, but food was great! Breakfast sandwich with gluten free options, one of the best Greek salads, and spiced apple cider. Overall, great experience.
Always good food and service there!
Everyone loves popovers but get them filled
Love the popovers. Turkey Panini. Great food. Great people watching
Good place for lunch or a sweet treat.it can get busy.it is worth it. The popovers are very good.
Great food with good ambiance. Tough to find parking, though.
Make sure for pop over is warmed up properly! The maple butter won't melt otherwise, and you'll end up eating it anyway because it's so delicious, even when tepid. You won't be able to stop long enough to bring it back to the counter bc it's so good, even though it's congealed, and then you'll feel gross for eating it
Fantastic popovers! Definitely worth the drive. And on the way you can stop and walk through a WWII submarine.
Told the barista it was my wife’s birthday and they put a candle in her dessert. Bumped it up from 4 to 5 stars for the little extra sweetness.
Great place for a casual lunch or dinner without breaking the bank.
This place is literally so good. Their maple butter is to die for
Though my visit was brief, the service was very good. I had my coffee ready within moments of my order even when they were busy.
Busy busy place! Went on a warm day in January and it was packed. Popover was good but there wasn't enough of the maple butter to really fill it up like I wanted to and the mocha I got was a tad sweet (otherwise would have been a 5 star review). Good place to people watch on the square (if you can get a seat)
Friendly, honest, big portions and lots of care put into their desserts. 10/10 would do it again.
Good spot for a family lunch. Counter staff was warm and helpful
Decent coffee for USA. Desert is too sweet. There was no a regular cheesecake there during our visit
Great food. Allergy aware. The place to be for lunch in Portsmouth.
Great tea. I treated my friend to a lovely fruit tart after the shephard pie. All are friendly and happy to serve.
Just the best cafe and pastry shop ever! We live this place!
Reminds me of a Panera restaurant concept in a way. This place can be very busy but service was good. Food was decent although I wish the sandwiches contained a little more meat based on the price you pay. The menu offers a wide selection of choices and some unique offerings as well. Seating can be challenging on a busy day so be prepared.

Good food, reasonably priced, friendly service.
$8 for an iced coffee that was probably some of the worst coffee i've had. workers are kind and apologetic. they gave me the incorrect buzzer so i had to wait up at the front to get my food. used to be such a good spot i am unsure of what happened.
If you're walking around Portsmouth then Popovers is a great place to stop in for a light meal or coffee. All guests place their order at the counter and are given a buzzer which goes off when your order is done at which point you pick the order up at the window directly from the cooks. You then find yourself a table in the spacious but cozy dining room and enjoy your time looking out the window at Market square. I have to say that the cooks fairly often forget something in my order, usually some add-on ingredient like salmon on a salad or leaving an ingredient off a dish, but everyone is so incredibly nice that it's really hard to get upset with them and they fix it very quickly. That's why I keep going back!
Probably one of the best desserts I have ever had! We had the Apple crisp with ice cream and our kids had the eclair and cupcake. Highly recommend this place. Will definitely be back.
They have great salads, soups, sandwiches, quiche and pastries. The cakes are beautiful. They recreated my parents' wedding cake beautifully, and it was delicious.
The desserts here are amazing!! And it's so nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy downtown Portsmouth. There is also indoor seating if the weather isn't so nice. If you haven't been here I highly suggest it!
Good service and great tea.
Great breakfast sandwiches
Wonderful all around. Always spectacular service and breakfast/bakery/coffee. They even do beer and coctails! 10/10 would recommend
Go here every summer. Good food.
Great place for munchies, desserts and fantastic breakfast. I love coming here early before 8 for an hour of quiet, delicious coffee in a window overlooking quaint downtown Portsmouth. I've also ordered cakes for birthday parties etc. from here and they are stellar.
You had me at PopOvers! Great spot.
Picked up bagels today to go. Inedible—Stale, dry, tasteless. Will not be returning ever.
Walked out when I saw soooooooo much unnecessary PLASTIC being used....went one block away and had fabulous food without any plastic at all.....WALK OUT....TAKE A STAND EVERYDAY!!!
Great pastry’s. Super awesome service and they had amazing gluten free options. The gluten free popovers were fantastic.
Great spot in the heart of it all in Portsmouth. I prefer this location to the sit down service in Epping. Love the self serve coffee. So many choices! The popovers are wonderful carriers of their maple butter..yumm
In December I had the opportunity to stop in at Popovers in Portsmouth NH for a much anticipated lunch. Having been a frequent guest there for many years before moving away from the area I was anticipating a well prepared, flavorful sandwich. Unfortunately expectations did not meet reality. I ordered the Bon Mi sandwich and I can state that this was not only the worst Bon Mi sandwich I have ever eaten, but it was by far the worst sandwich I had eaten all year. The sandwich was a wet mess, leaving a pool of liquid on the plate. In addition, the pulled pork was bathed in a sauce that was so overloaded with salt that the entire concoction was inedible. After leaving the restaurant I thought I should convey this to the management and sent them a note on their website. No response. No apology. No offer to reimburse for a horrible experience. I used to be a big fan of Popovers and would recommend it to people traveling to the area. Based on this experience along with managements lack of response I will not be recommending this restaurant ever again. So many great dining options in Portsmouth - Popovers is not one of them!
I love this place. Delicious gluten free popovers?! Plus a really good smoked salmon salad. I'm happy. For you gluten eaters there are a loaf of pastries to choose from. Stunning cakes in the window. I wish I lived nearby!
Well if ya like treats they got em and yup , good coffee 2 , the treats well hell they are top notch !
Great place for breakfast. Delicious food and friendly staff.
Cute environment, friendly staff. Food was a little bland.
Such a wonderful place for coffee, baked goods, lunch and Wi-Fi. Everything tasted wonderful from the popovers to the desserts. My son enjoyed the white hot chocolate.
Coffee $3-5 Tea $3-4 Bagel $2.79 Avocado toast (w/egg & salmon) $14 ✅restrooms Tea, coffee and desserts are great here. Great vibes, love their outside and front window seatings. so you can observe the street life while enjoying a meal or a sweet treat.
Always friendly staff and excellent service
Good BLT, but wish there was more meat for what you pay for. The deserts are good, but too expensive. I enjoyed the food, but I wouldn't go there often since I already have a mortgage.
Another eating place that is just ok. Not a ton of good healthy options. I go the tomato soup and a salad. It was a touch on the expensive side for what it was. The soup was just ok and the salad was the kind of salad that makes you not want to eat a salad again for lunch.
We took the boys and their stroller along with the dog to the highly touted Popovers on the Square smack in the middle of downtown. We enjoyed awesome baked popovers with cheese and egg as we sat right in the main square and watched what seemed like half of the town walk by. The coffee was nice and tasty and on a chilly day, very warm.
They definitely could up their game. 1. Popovers seem to be an afterthought. You get one with a meal. 2. The actual popovers are only so-so. I was hoping for a little more creativity in the their namesake. 3. The food, while pretty good, is not worth the money. My date and I each had a salad and a drink, totalling $40
Interesting way to served popovers as a dessert.
My family had been coming here for years. Great place to sit on the patio, watch downtown Portsmouth, and enjoy a coffee and a dessert.
One of the few good food options in Portsmouth area.
