Having had the honor and privilege to work alongside the Barlows for five years before and during the Milford Pumpkin Festival (MPF) making and selling 1000+ cupcakes in 22 different flavors (all of which I have tasted), I feel I am fairly qualified to pass judgment on them all. Kathleen uses real ingredients to create her flavors - the Apple Pie is made with real homemade applesauce filling and the fruit flavors (like Raspberry Cream) are all made with real fruit and not with jam. Almost every flavor has the cake, a filling, a frosting, and a garnish or two (or three!). Only a couple of kinds have no filling because the cake batter itself is flavored, like the Carrot Cake or the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip (which turned out to be one of my top 5 fave flavs!). That being said, stating that I have “only” 5 favorites is downright silly, because I truly like all of them. Some of them I am actually in love with – Key Lime, S’mores, Red Velvet, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip, Banana Caramel Cream – that’s five right there and I’m just getting started! People at the MFP will (when looking at all the flavors and trying to decide) ask “What’s your favorite?” or “What’s the best one?” and I simply cannot give them a one-flavor answer! My best advice: Allow me to put 12 different flavors in a 12-cupcake box, as this gives you a great sampling of the flavors and also happens to be the best MPF value.
I have also ordered special-occasion cakes from MillTown Cakes – again, difficult to pick a fave since I have sampled them all, but Kathleen has made me the Banana Caramel Cream which was so delish, I wanted to have it at every meal – not after every meal, FOR every meal. It was frosted in a lovely and unusual basket-weave pattern and adorned with green and blue icing accents. If you want a cake without a specific theme, I definitely recommend the basket-weave look – it was beautiful! Regardless of the theme you choose, you will be DELIGHTED in both the look and the taste of the cake.
