An absolute staple of Portsmouth cuisine. You simply cannot talk about Portsmouth's food without mentioning Ceres, and with good reason. I grew up eating here, and continue to frequent this bakery with friends and family whenever nearby, or mornings before work. Their "Snitz" is one of the most unique cookies I've ever had, and a flavor you won't get anywhere else. It's nostalgic, wholesome, and flavorful with loads of zest and nuts. Plus, their homemade soups, breads, and pastries are all well worth the (very reasonable) price. Just know, however, they are cash-only (but there is an ATM inside).

The best bakery in Portsmouth. The best lunch in Portsmouth with 2 lunch specials where one option is vegetarian every day except Sunday when there's a brunch special. Also, a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and a flatbread special everyday. And, of course, a wide variety of cookies, bars, brownies, tarts, cakes for all the sweet tooths. Oh yeah, and they bake their own beads too, which rotate depending on the day of the week. Ceres bakes bread for local restaurants, such as my favorite breakfast spot Colby's. The final thing to know about Ceres?.. it's not on Ceres street (anymore, it used to be a long time ago heard).

Ceres is a cash only bakery. But don't expect to keep coming back just for baked goods. Ceres is one of Portsmouth's best lunch options for fast casual dining. Every day they have two rotating specials for lunch (I grab a mac and cheese whenever they serve it), three baskets of flatbreads, handmade soups, and custom sandwiches. Oh, and did I mention it was a great bakery? Bank of America and Newburyport Savings is nearby if you need an ATM, otherwise get money from the on site ATM near the door. Checks accepted as well.

Found this place via Google maps. Okay atmosphere, it got busy as soon as I started ordering, so I took my goodie to go. My one complaint, I really wish that raisins had been listed as an ingredient on the Pumpkin cake I chose. I asked if it was like pumpkin bread and the lady waiting on me said yes, but with frosting. I never put raisins in my bread. Otherwise, not a dense cake being that it is gluten free too.

I go here every morning and am forced to spend 10 dollars in order to use my credit card however, I witnessed the staff allowing friends to spend much less and still pay via card. This was very frustrating! Not good business ethics at all. Food is great however!

This place is a great breakfast or lunch stop. The sweets are outstanding and the only thing they lack is a great coffee (no espresso so 4 stars not 5). The interior has a cool vibe and the feeling of a little French Bistro in a small city. Great people behind the counter as well. Highly recommend.

It's obvious that the people that work here are very passionate about what they do because you can see it in how the coffee and pastries are being made. A fun place with quality food. People here seem to love their work in the way only the gritty passionate do. 5 bucks gets you a honking breakfast wrap with lots of veggies that kept me full most of the day. Add a solid, no-frills choice of five coffees (two organic) at the self service counter, and you've got yourself a morning. Did I mention a bakery case that will make you slap your grandma? CASH ONLY!
