We got exactly what we envisioned for our cake. We had a subtle video game/Link theme to our wedding. We got a cake with a beautiful heart container as a center piece and they weaved the same pattern in the details of the cake. The guests loved the flavors-people had at least two slices. I would suggest to get less; we got cake that was supposed to feed 120 people and we had 130 guest. We ended up with half of a sheet cake left and one tier.

Purchased the Coconut Cream Cake from Sugar Bakers this past weekend for a family birthday party and was EXTREMELY disappointed! The cake had hardly any coconut and the icing was bland and tasted strongly of shortening. Not only did it not taste impressive, it did not look impressive as well; there was no decoration or "flare" to the cake at all! This is not the first bad experience I've had with Sugar Bakers. I was a repeat customer that use to tout over their cakes but after this bad experience and one I had with cupcakes for my daughter's baby shower I will not be returning!

Probably not fair but I purchased Groupon and didn't realize I HAD to order 7 days ahead and ran out of time because of expiration. Decided to go ahead and just use "promotional value" but the read reviews and thought: "why bother"? Location not convenient for me at all so I just ripped up Groupon. I went to Sugar Bakers at the suggestion of a bakery in Ellicott City that did not have what I needed. I needed a pretty birthday cake immediately. Sugar Bakers had a pretty little yellow cake with creamy icing that seemed just perfect. I asked that they personalize it, and they suggested adding flowers. I couldn’t have been happier. I felt so fortunate. The first sign of a problem was when I saw the too large script on the small cake in a hideous color. The rest was when the cake was served. No one said a word! Not one word! The silence was deafening! Everyone’s plate had great amounts of frosting cut away from the top and between the layers. When I tasted a slice I realized there was no taste. No one asked for seconds, not even the children. I suggested the party girl take the remainder to work where office workers often eat anything. I am so disappointed in SB and will not be going back ever!

I had the most delicious piece of amaretto buttercream cake at The Black Kettle yesterday, and was happy to find out that it was from a local bakery. It has been a LONG time since I have had proper buttercream frosting!!! (Butter, confectioners sugar, heavy cream and vanilla.) It was incredibly rich, because butter, which necessitated smaller bites to allow the frosting to melt in my mouth. I actually couldn't finish the piece because it was so decadent. I'm absolutely going to order my fiance's birthday cake here! :)

I had to go 3 times to order a cake since they don't accept cakes with 7 days of a needed date. Next time I planned 1 week ahead but they said they are not able to take order due to "overwhelming" orders. Finally I ordered the 3rd time by going 8 days ahead and I went to pickup today. Since it was Friday the traffic was so bad, I reached their store at 6.01 pm. The person in the store said that they close at 6.00 pm and rejected to deliver my cake. They are not even considerate for 1 min delay. My wifes bidthday party is ruined due to the attitude of these bakers. They believe that it is a privilege to eat their cake. I am not going to these guys once again.

Let me preface this review by saying that I don't normally like cake (cupcakes, yes-- but there's something about the icing-to-cake ratio that is never right with most cakes). Sugarbakers, though, is on another level. I LOVE their cakes, especially the Red Velvet Fudge. It is moist and gooey and beyond delicious. I also think their customer service is wonderful! I've never had any problems, and in fact they have gone out of their way to be accommodating with my requests (ie supplying a single cupcake for my son's birthday along with his regular cake). If you're polite, they're polite back. Simple as that. I would take the earlier rants with a grain of salt-- this is a SMALL, family-owned bakery, so yes a week's advance for custom orders is necessary and very reasonable in my opinion! Yes, their cakes are expensive-- but as I already said, they are ridiculously delicious. I always look forward to finding reasons for ordering them :)

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I had been in communication with the staff there regarding my daughter's 1st birthday cake. During our communication she mentioned that they needed a week's notice. Well- I was out of town on Saturday so I called first thing Monday morning. Apparently when they say a week- they are talking a FULL 7 DAYS (even though they are closed on Sundays) and despite my ongoing communication with them- they were NOT budging! No alternative, no recommendation and no sympathy. They couldn't care less!! My mom even tried to call and reason with them. After all- I HAD several emails/communications with them the prior week, so they were familiar with my request. They were just as rude to her and when she asked them if they had a recommendation, her response was "GOOGLE it". What a SHAME. I am a repeat customer....Well, I WAS a repeat customer. Thanks a lot. Sincerely, one very disappointed Mommy to a 1 year old!!!

I ordered my wedding cake from Sugar Bakers and my guests loved it so I didn't care that it cost more that my dress did. I was so happy that I've ordered at least 16 cakes from them in the past 4 yrs, however recent experiences have been less than ideal. I ordered a cake for my dad's birthday nearly $60 for a plain 10inch cake, the cake had a dent in it, they tried to cover it up with frosting and quickly put it in the box as if I wouldn't notice. They did not inform me or apologize when I pointed it out, as if that was acceptable. I just left vs making a fuss because I figured I would never come back. Customer service has gone down hill. They didn't greet me when I walked in. They only follow up with orders if you put a down payment down. If you pay in full they dont seem to care if you come to pick it up or not because they already got their money so they won't call. The flavors have become less robust, the lemon cake now tastes nothing like the lemon cake I got for my wedding. Although I have had good experiences here in the past. Amendment: I called and spoke to the manager/owner about it, and she was sincerely apologetic and made the situation right by redoing the cake. I am changing the low rating I gave based on the isolated experience to a higher rating indicative of my overall history with the business.

Understanding that things can go wrong with the ordering process I want to first say that I ordered this cake which I had before and it is adelicious cake. Due to my personal schedule I forgot about the cake. They claim that they have a 4 day hold policy and after that they must throw the cake out. I remembered the cake on the 6th day. I am okay with all of that but on my order form some teenagers claimed that they called me and left 3 messages on my personal cell phone. That is categorically false. The manager said "it's not our responsibility and we don't take phone numbers to remind patrons of their cakes its only for our convenience if we have an issue or a problem". She then goes on to explain to me why she has to believe the teenagers over a paying customer. My love affair with Sugarbaker cakes has come to an end. :-(

Sugarbakers is incredible! They made an amazing cake for a surprise 40th birthday party. I had relatives guess that the cake cost 5 times what I paid! It also tasted really great- we got the chocolate cake with the German buttercream icing for the filling layers (not too sugary sweet, just perfect).

Went here for the first time and the cupcakes were mediocre for the price paid. They apparently can't get their frosting right. It was so bad that I'd say grocery store cupcakes which are significantly cheaper is better than the "gourmet" cupcakes offered here. The cannoli I had was also not good. The cake I ordered was good enough that I would come back again for the cake and only the cake.

Sugar Bakers made our wedding cake and grooms cake for our wedding on 9/7/19 in Harford County. I am so pleased with them and we had no cake left over because people went for seconds and thirds!! I thought we would have to spend an arm and a leg, but Sugar Bakers is so resonably priced! They told us not to freeze our top tier because they will provide us with a top tier at our 1 year anniversary for free! All cake toppers were from Etsy, but I told Sugar Bakers my vision and my husbands and they did not disappoint! Everyone at the shop was extremely helpful and the cake tasting was wonderful! The cakes were delivered perfectly and I only had to put the topper on. I cannot recommend them enough!!! (photos are from an iphone, sorry! Still waiting for the final set of wedding photos!)

I orginally sent an email of a cake that I wanted for a quote and time frame for ordering. They said I could either call on the phone to place the order or go into their store. I decided to go into their store (able to taste their product since I had never been there before). I described to the lady exactly what I wanted, showed her pictures of what I did and didnt want. Plus, I even told her about the email I sent. Long story short, I wanted a cake that looked like a ballerina tutu. Instead, I have a cake that I could have made on my own and they didnt even get the colors correct! They completly messed up the colors for the smash cake- I think that's hard to do when you show them pictures. It is for my daughter's 1st birthday party. Not only will I be disappointed today, but every time I look back at her photos. The cake flavors are good, but not the service. I am sad unpaid for the product I received. I will not be back!

Sugar Bakers made us an absolutely incredible wedding cake! Our first experience with the bakery was our cake tasting - which was AMAZING! They have you sample every kind of cake they offer, including different frosting. Everything is incredible! Our consultant gave us some money saving tips for our cake, which we really appreciated. I tried to upload a picture of our cake because it was absolutely stunning. I brought in a picture to our consultation and they made it even more beautiful than I could have imagined. Our guests RAVED about how great the cake was! And they make you an anniversary cake on your one year anniversary. We're excited for that! The staff was very kind and helpful. The cake arrived on time on the wedding day and was gorgeous/tasty. What more could you ask for?! We'd suggest this bakery any day. And we can't wait to work with them again! THANK YOU!!

I'm not exactly sure why they put their cupcakes in the refrigerator because room temperature cupcakes taste much better. And the freshness of the cupcake didn't seem up to standard either. I attempted to place an inquiry request on their website for a cake over a week in advance. Never heard anything so I called the store, was informed that their website inquiry form does not work, and I was too late to place an order over the phone. They should not have a form on their website to place a request if it has no way for it to get to the store. While their cakes are great, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired, no offer to help except they will have should have some cakes leftover if I want to run all the way there to maybe get something. Got our wedding cake here, bridal party custom shaped lemon cake and two sheet cakes for the rest of the guests, one lemon and one red velvet. It was some of the best cake I have ever had. Took us weeks to finish all the leftovers, we ordered way too much, but it stayed amazingly well in the freezer.

I've gotten cakes from them twice and both times an older lady was behind the counter. She was rude and curt both times. No greeting, just "Can I help you?". And as soon as I paid she just walked off, no thanks or have a nice day. Hell, you get an absent minded "Have a nice day" at Walmart. The cakes were good but not good enough to compensate for the horrid customer service. A simple exchange of pleasantries won't kill you. Update: Lowering my review to 1 star. I went there a third time (because it was my teammates birthday and he loved their cake last time) and the service was quite possibly the worst ever. The same lady was behind the counter dealing with another customer so I waited patiently. She did not greet me, she did not acknowledge me. After she dealt with the first customer, she walked off. She did not ask me if I wanted anything, she did not greet me, she simply walked off. It was another 5 mins before anyone came to help me. It was a much younger lady and she was very sweet. But honestly I won't be returning to this place.

I ordered a wedding cake and an additional sheet cake for a wedding. They were very accommodating to changes I made to the wedding cake and it turned out great. However, they delivered the wrong sheet cake flavor. Upon informing the bakery, the manager offered a full refund for the sheet cake as well as an additional gift card. The reason I didn't rate them poorly is because all of the cake tasted really good and they offered to make the situation right by offering the refund.

My mom recently purchased a cake for my 27th birthday. The cake came up to $50.00. They put a real flower as decor on my cake , which was a little unhygienic to me.The exterior of the cake was beautiful , but the icing was pure Crisco to the point where it feels like your eating a Crisco cake. We asked for buttercream frosting ; not crisco frosting. I feel so sick and unhealthy after just one slice. I am not familiar with Crisco. At first we thought it was butter. I did not realize it was Crisco until I tried heating it. The icing did not melt! Telltale sign of Crisco! I eventually threw up my piece of cake on my birthday. I now feel sick; on my birthday!! The only reason why I ate the entire piece is to be polite to my mom , who spent $50.00. My 4 year old and 3 year old were disappointed! They did not eat their pieces because they said it was disgusting. Once I realized it was Crisco I did not let them try another piece. I really wanted to like this place , but I cannot give a place that is using such unhealthy ingredients more then one star with a clear conscious. Hopefully I won't experience any health problems after consuming my slice of cake. There are tons of buttercream frosting recipes online that do not include Crisco. So please do better because if your product has a negative impact on someone's health ;you could be held accountable. So please do better!! Get rid of the freaking Crisco ; it's 2018. There are many healthier options.

If you purchased a groupon or livingsocial deal, read the fine print because this merchant is not flexible at all. She refuses to allow you to purchase a cake that is in the case with the voucher, which pretty much meant that my voucher would be wasted because I need a birthday cake in 2 days and she would only let me order a cake in the next week.

I can't speak to their wedding services, but their cakes are delicious. There are so many flavors of cake to choose from. The whole cakes can be a bit pricey, so we always buy by the slice. You can get 6 pieces of cake for less than 1 6 inch cake. But we usually mix it up and get a mixture of cake slices, brownies (their brownies are to die for), tarts, cannoli, eclairs or cookies. The cake and brownies are my favorites. There is one cake that uses a certain type of icing that doesn't have much flavor -- a very similar icing is used on the decorative Whole Foods cakes if you've ever had them. It is a thick texture that must be kept refrigerated. I wonder if this is the cake other reviews that complained about lack of flavor and too much icing were talking about? It isn't for everyone that one. Their red velvet is a little different than expected but still good. The chocolate mousse cake is my husband's favorite. If you don't see a slice of a flavor you like, just ask. There weren' t any chocolate mousse slices for my husband's birthday this week, and with just the two of us, buying a whole cake didn't make sense, so I asked if they'd cut me two slices and they did. They're usually pretty friendly (not overly friendly but nice enough) when we go in and pretty much everything we've gotten has been great. And we are both rather picky when it comes to cake.

We so wanted to love this bakery. The decorating was incredible! Really superb. However, with the first bite I knew this was not a first rate cake. The cake itself was very dry. The mocha "buttercream" filling was very similar to flavored Crisco: it would not melt in my mouth as a true butter cream should. So sad.

My experience is similar to others who have posted about rude employees and bland shortening based frosting. The cake with a simple birthday message was outlandishly priced and average in taste. There were no seconds for anyone and I could not give pieces to take home for any of the guests. One tried a forkful and left the rest of their piece untouched. Instead of appreciative comments about the fine flavor, I heard- "most of this is frosting smothering the cake" and "the cake and frosting are so heavy, TOO heavy". The thick layer of inexpensive raspberry jam between the cake layers boosted the sugar level into the stratosphere. I was so embarrassed, I had told everyone about the delicious cake my husband and I had this company make for our wedding and all the guests were looking forward to tasting it. I will never buy another cake from Sugar Bakers again. There are many other bakeries with much tastier cakes that won't leave you outraged when you pay.

I am a chef. I have also worked as a pastry chef. I am also a cake snob. I've read the reviews of others and I can not speak much on customer service other than to say I've called on various occasions and no one has ever been rude to me. I've read the reviews about the heaviness of the frosting which is common when real butter is being used as opposed to shortening which creates lighter/greasier frosting which is common in many bake shops producing processed pastries. My first experience with Sugar bakers was exceptional. My expectation was that it would be disappointing as most store bought cakes. I was wrong! What I experienced was a cake that was quite authentic. I could taste the richness. The cake was flavorful and dense almost comparable to pound cake just a bit lighter. I could taste the butter...which really resonates "Old Fashion " and "Grandma's cake". I enjoyed the raspberry filling and almond flavoring. In fact I asked for a small piece of cake instead I was given quite a large piece and shamefully inhaled the whole thing. Over the years as a caterer I have worked with many clients who have used Sugar Bakers. The experience in what has now been eight years continues to be consistent and the last cake was just as good as the one I had the very first day. I've never known a client or an Event Planner (which is often the case) that I have interacted with to be disappointed with a Sugar Bakers Cake. I will continue to send them business because it's a good product! If you subscribe to Costco/Walmart/Sam's club cakes than yes Sugar Bakers may not be for you simply because these cakes are made from base mix, shortening and corn syrup base frosting and commonly artificial extracts; but if you have a grandmother somewhere who used to bake the best cakes ever, made from natural ingredients than Sugar Bakers is the place to go. I just have to add that overall I'm appalled by the unfairness of these reviews. People forget to pick up their cakes and give a low review. People offended by the policy of a 7 day requirement so they give a bad review. There is so much that goes into making pastries and you factor in product demand it making it necessary to establish a time line. Sugar Bakers requires 7 days. That's not poor customer service, that's policy. Which is smart business...knowing what it takes for you to give your customers a great product.

The atmosphere: It was a nice quaint little bakery. They have a little seating area with a nice view of the neighborhood if you want to enjoy your item there. They have beautiful cake displays and a sufficient array of delectable baled goods. It has a personal small town, down home feel much like the neighborhood. This is a place you could go and the people would address you by name and remember your favorite treat. But, I ... didnt feel welcome. There were two women behind the counter, The woman that helped me smiled and checked up while I choose a cupcake but seemed like she wanted me to leave. The other woman seemed more genuine-ly happy to see us and welcoming. (I increased my rating one star for her.) The food: I ordered a red velvet cupcake filled with a chocolate cream and, while just a *little* dry, it was delicious. It was so good that despite the fact I didnt feel totally welcomed, I sat in the car and considered going back in for another one. LoL.

SugarBakers was contracted to do our cake via our caterer, Rouge. We decided on red velvet for our 4th and top tier (to save), a tier of the cannoli flavor and a tier of the smith island flavor. Everyone raved about all the flavors and the moistness, high quality of the cake. The cake was so beautiful that we didn’t need a topper, flowers, or any other adornments and we ended up not using any! Unfortunately I (the bride) was very ill on wedding day and didn’t get to eat much cake. But even going on 2 weeks thereafter I am loving the leftovers! The cake is still quality and tastes great!

Upon entering the store, no one acknowledged me. I called to two ladies that was having a personal conversation at the front while assembling cake boxes and they both dismissed me. A woman came from the back to assist. This is the second time the staff was dismissive and rude. The cakes are good but I will not be returning. This is very disappointing I have purchase my wedding cake for my renewal from here in 2013 and several birthday cakes, cupcakes and treats from here.

EDIT: they were really nice about my bad cake. They offered me a full refund right away. I got a smaller chocolate mousse cake. It was pretty good. Not amazing but much better than the first. I'm adding on two extra stars, primarily becaise the service was good and the cakes looked beautiful. The worst cake I've ever had. I bought a classic ivory cake for my wife's 30th birthday. For $50, I expected something at least decent. I've had $10 cakes from Walmart that tasted better. The cake was dry and the icing was disgusting. I've never known people to eat around the icing before. The place gets at least one star because it was a well decorated cake.

We did not think we were going to have a cake! One caterer called them “dinosaurs” and said everyone was doing dessert bars now. But a coworker said, “But you should still go have cake tastings! Those are fun and free and delicious.” Well, the tasting is how Sugar Bakers reels you in…damn, if each flavor wasn’t better than the last! Our salesperson brought out a beautiful plate of eleven flavors and additional dollops of the three types of frosting. Of the flavors, four stood out to me as especially delicious: Peach Melba (the best!), Chocolate Mousse Toffee, Amaretto Raspberry, and Red Velvet. I also thought the Lemon Mousse and Strawberry Breeze were quite good. My partner also liked the Toasted Coconut Cream and Cannoli d’Ville flavors; I found them a bit too subtle. For our 100-person wedding, we chose a simple cake of three round tiers, with the bottom tier Peach Melba and the upper tiers Red Velvet, all with French buttercream (rich and silky, and much less sweet than American buttercream, which they also offer if that’s your preference). (We loved those two flavors and their retro-ness fit well with our theme to boot.) Because ANY frosting decoration immediately escalates the price a lot, our salesperson recommended we get it plainly frosted, and then provide ribbon they would put around the base of each layer at no extra charge, and that we provide a cake topper. We did this and it was cute, if a bit plain. Their website offers so many beautiful designs, including incredible stuff with fondant, but of course, fondant doesn’t taste great (guests can peel it away from the buttercream underneath on their serving, if desired) and takes the price from maybe $6/serving to $11-13/serving. It’s too bad because I was enamored of the Pickle Barrel cake on their site and so wanted it for my country fair themed wedding. But ours was cute with the ribbon, flag bunting topper from Etsy, and a few paper pinwheels added by our decorator (to echo the flag bunting in tent and vases of pinwheels as centerpieces). The cake was delicious and we got many compliments on it. We had some to take home and enjoyed it on our own and with friends for several days after. SugarBakers was easy to work with from tasting through delivery, including a few emails and phone calls. I highly recommend them!

THE CAKE was the final piece of the puzzle that we were waiting to see. It did not disappoint. Sugarbakers was really great. Our tasting was delicious and a really tough choice, you can't go wrong with any of the flavors. I don't write reviews typically for anything but because they almost ruined my wedding day I feel like other brides should be aware. First, they were late...so late that my reception had already started and my coordinator but me in a panic while I was trying to take pictures to inform me the cake had yet to arrive at 7:15 pm. Second, they forgot our sheet cake that we specifically ordered for guest who could not have chocolate or peanut butter which was the flavor of our wedding cake. So not only did some of our guest not get cake but we had to cut the entire cake and were unable to take the top home.

Usally I love this bakery. I ordered a cake for my husband 's birthday, and there was a mix up with the order after I even called to make sure I was Specific about the interior of the cake! They did not even try to offer any kind of resolution ( even if it was toward a future purchase)!!! My birthday cake was purchased from there, and it was not cheap. I love there products , but will not be back anytime soon. Their cakes are not cheap and I don't look for cheap, but I do like a company that will at least try to make a loyal customer more satisfied especially when they screwed up the order. We had a party where the birthday honoree couldn't even eat the cake!!!!

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE!! We decided to use them as part of our wedding package with Atlantic Caterers. The cake flavors were good. So we went to the consult to design our wedding cake. We were given a very narrow selection to pick from. Our coordinator advised us that the couple of extra things we got on the cake were way over priced. Everytime we called to ask a question about something we were given the run around and never received a return phone call. If they did call back it was a week later. They were very rude and short when you did get a call back. They made us feel like because we werent spending $5000 our order wasnt very important. After the caterer telling us this wasnt the first time they have had complaints, reading other reviews, and our personal experience, we decided to switch caterers.

Ordered a birthday cake for my Mother's 71st birthday and requested lemon curd and lemon mousse fillings. It was a pretty cake but really couldn't visually detect any lemon curd or lemon mousse nor did it have any lemon taste. I called about it and was told that the mousse and curd fillings "are runny and soak into the cake". She said the person that took the order should have told you that. Seriously??? I was in the wedding business for 10 years so I was familiar with Sugarbarker's cakes and I've even had their lemon mousse and curd before. To be fair, they asked if I wanted to talk to a manager but after being fed the line about it being runny, I didn't want to hear questionable excuses. Unfortunately after reading other reviews I think they may be slipping.

I bought a cake for my daughter's baby shower. My daughter gave me a picture of a cake design she wanted. I took the picture to the bakery and they made exactly what I was asking for. I was so surprised, and satisfied, when I picked up the cake on the day of the baby shower. The cake tasted DELICIOUS!! The guest all asked where I got the cake. Everyone enjoyed the flavour of the cake and icing. The icing was delicious with the amaretto and raspberry filling. Absolutely SUPERB!! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the location/parking was inconvenient for cake pick up. Also, the prices were so high I couldn't get the 2 tier cake I originally wanted. I ended up getting a sheet cake with the design adjusted to the shape.

Sugar Bakers is SO DELICIOUS! Honestly that is all you need to know but they are also gorgeous! We fell in love with their raspberry amaretto at our first wedding show and I knew I had to have them make our wedding cake. However, I am from Pittsburgh, so my family demands a cookie table. I also worked as a wedding server, so I have seen the amount of wedding cake that gets thrown out at the end of the night. So my brilliant idea was to have a dessert table, and sugar bakers does not offer dessert displays. Except they did. I cannot express the gratitude and joy having them work to make my ridiculous vision a reality even though it wasn’t a service they offered. Krissy was absolutely amazing and made sure that we had everything we wanted. We had a plethora of cake, cupcakes, bars, cookies, cannoli, tarts, you name it. And in the end it was everything I could have dreamed up and we received SO MANY compliments on it. We will definitely be getting a lot of future desserts from Sugar Bakers! *I want to PS this that since they do not do dessert bars we had to coordinate and collect all our own serve ware and display items, which was a pain. I finally made it into this store after 3 years of passing by it. It is not handicapped accessible in the front, which is why I never went in. After my husband pushed me up the steps.... We didn't feel very welcomed. :-( The Goodies we purchased were just okay. Lady at the counter was just "doing her job" and the others disappeared when we walked in. My hubby is very friendly but it was not reciprocated. Guess we didn't fit the typical profile of people who live around there. I would suggest a little diversity and customer service training!
