You know that we don't usually stop to set reviews when they are positive and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Bakery belongs to the category of Bakery.
Get there early - you won't be disappointed. I'm a fan of baked goods and Standard is the gold standard. The cinnamon buns...very dreamy.
As many others have said get here early for the best selection! The croissants flaky and buttery goodness. Try the plain ones to start, or my personal favorite was the prosciutto and cheese. Seating is very limited so maybe find a bench nearby if you are looking for a place to sit and enjoy.
Consistently high quality baked goods and service! Excellent!
Their morning buns and Maine Grain bread are so delicious. Great staff, and always busy. But it never takes long.
If you have a warm spot in your heart for bakeries, you have to visit Standard Baking Co. All kinds of nice sweet things, but the real test of a bakery is the bread, and you can't do better than place. Vollkornbrot is amazing. Nice location across the street from the harbor, too.
Delicious pastries!
Absolutely wonderful Pain au Chocolat. When we visit Portland, we always look forward to paying Standard Baking a visit.
There’s a line here for a reason. Savory and sweet pastries are a delicious snack, and they make tons of bread which they will slice fresh for you
If you’re downtown Portland you owe it to your taste buds to stop and get a...well, anything! Yumm!
Hidden in a back plaza, this place was a gem. Quality baked goods. Flakey crossiants.
Simply excellent. Baguettes were out of the world
I love this place!!
Try the financier.... Wowowowow so good! Also pictured is the chocolate croissant, which was also very good but nowhere near the level of the financier
Had a croissant and and oatmeal raisin cookie. The croissant was good... But that ostmeal raisin cookie...man...it was unbelievable. Slightly warm, chewy, buttery... I enjoyed it way too much!!!
I love this bakery! Everything we tried was delicious! Going back tomorrow morning for more treats.
Exceptional baguettes and epi here. The parties are also phenomenal. The Walnut and choc chip cookies may well be the best cookie I ever had.
The best apple pastry ever!! We were in town from Atlanta and just dropped by before going to the airport. So delicious.
Croissants where super good, bread was REALLY GOOD. The local wheat sourdough was my favorite but the focaccia was one of the best I've had. Really doesn't compare to grocery store bread, even whole foods seems shabby for fresh bread in comparison.
The scones were delicious (and free parking on a busy day was appreciated)!
There's a reason this bakery is rated one of the top in the United States. It doesn't look like much, but the quality is phenomenal and the flavors exquisite. I've sampled nearly all their pastries and never found one that disappointed me.
Beautiful place! Good croissants
The streusel was delicious. The baguette was fresh and warm. Even now that it's cool down it's still soft inside and crunchy outside. Perfection. Can't wait to tackle the cookie.
Great food and nice people.
Peach pie was the best. Delicately sweet and refined taste
This place makes the most delicious things! I rave to all my friends about their chocolate rye cookies, financiers, and fougasse. The bread is baked fresh daily and delicious. They have challah every Friday. They usually have samples which is an added bonus. Parking is tricky, they have a parking lot but it is shared with the hotel. The attendant waiting for hotel guests makes it a hit confusing. It can be hard to spot from the road as well. Supporting local business whilst feeding my carb addiction, who could want more?
Fantastic selection of sweet and savory. I've been here a couple of times to pick up pastries for clients that I am visiting, and it is always a big hit. I tried the coffee for the first time, and I really enjoyed it. Parking spaces are a bit tight. My company car is a Grand Caravan, and it is a bit is a squeeze trying to get out of my minivan without pushing my door into the vehicle next to me.
Very nice naturally leavened (for the most part) breads.
Get a fruit buckle. Super berry muffin w/ a brown betty topping. Delicious!
Go here for a great start to your day
Absolutely fabulous, everything is delicious. Can't go wrong.
Super cute little hole in the wall, local bakery. Not a ton of variety though. The lemon tart WAS yummy though!!
Good stuff. Beautiful place. Try croissants. Not enough seating available.
Great food. Front porch needs some work...
Not a great selection. The coffee was too hot to even drink with anything you purchased. Staff isn't the friendliest.
Popular with locals.Line out door moving quickly. Morning bun with walnuts the best followed by chocolate croissants. Chocolate Core just pass..heavy oily poundcake rolled in powdered cocoa.Threw it away. Breads all looked tasty. Didn't try but should have!
Wonderful staff and amazing baked goods. They use quality ingredients and perfectly execute flaky croissant, chewy baguettes, decadent chocolate cakes just to name a few delicious items they offer
This place is heaven!
Great bread!
Expensive but the selection was very unique. Friendly staff
Smelled amazing, sourdough boule was so fresh and made for perfect peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Good pastries, no seating or bathrooms
Best baguette and croissant in town. Visitors, please come, it's as good as you've heard, but please also move efficiently through the line so others can enjoy as well!
Took one bite out of a baguette and was instantly back in Paris. And the pain chocolat? Don't even get me started! So good!
A much appreciated bakery to my French co-worker, who took baguettes and croissants for the road. I can attest to the delicious bread and pastry which we all ate while continuing our drive. The place has some nice looking seating outside, but in winter there was not much room for our large party (6 people). There is a big parking lot outside but it was a 6$/hr. fee. We had been looking for a cafe to sit and eat sandwiches etc and they were happy to make recommendations and give directions. We were warned that parking enforcement is strict.
Standard Baking Co makes the best bread in NE. Stock up on loaves of bread before leaving Portland and freeze it when you arrive home. We gave loaves of bread to our family members as souvenirs.
The croissants were so good
blueberry buckle temper tantrum warning... LOL have a LOVE HATE relationship with this bakery. They make the best blueberry buckles I’ve ever had. Not sure what that is? Imagine a blueberry muffin and a coffee cake had a baby.... yep, it’s that good. The only problem is that they also make blueberry/raspberry (yuk) and raspberry (double yuk). I’m sure there are folks that are as equally repulsed by their blue berry only buckles. Why rotate the flavors? It’s not as if it would be more difficult to make. I also know it’s not because of the lack of ingredients (another nearby bakery makes blueberry only buckles everyday.... but they are not nearly as yummy as yours) So here’s my solution to make both the blueberry and raspberry people happy. PICK A FRIGGEN DAY TO MAKE A SPECIFIC FLAVOR. For example “Blueberry Monday”, Raspberry Tuesday”. or better yet... MAKE ALL THREE FLAVORS AVAILABLE EVERY FRIGGEN DAY! It seems like every time I call, it’s the day that they made the other two flavors. Ok, my rant is over. LOL
Astonishing bakery!! Truly.
One of my must vist places when I am in Portland! Scones are my favorite purchase but the selection of pastries is fantastic! Grab a coffee while you are there and you are set to explore the City. Location is outstanding and there is parking while you load up on calories. Prices are in line with their location.
Wonderful selection of freshly made bread. Great cakes too.
Best bakery ever. Go on one of the days they make the almond croissants (they don't make the same things every day) and get there early because they sell out fast. Hands down the best almond croissants I have ever had, and I've travelled all over Europe, including Paris.
Great bakery love the place. You walk in to get just one thing and you walk out with much more.
Pastries are served on the very SMALL side and PRICED WAY WAY OVER what should be Service is fast and efficient. Coffee is mediocre BLAND. Shocking for something we were told by reviews is not the case. Reviewers here have suspended their rationality and it went out the window, the positive comments here are inflated and misrepresent The display items at the front are LARGE portions but it's kinda like bait and switch because they will grab a much smaller item in the back. So deceiving practice. Fast service. Tourists abound at this place like us
This was one of the places i wanted to visit while I am here as i had read and heard so much about this place. I was not disappointed. Being skeptical at first me and my girlfriend got one Rubharb and raspberry tart. It was one of the most amazing tart i ever had.I got hungry after that that went back in and got another Baguette and a Brioche roll. The breads are constantly baked and replaced . There is no place inside to sit but there is a small patio area covered with grape vines and big parking Lot. This place very well deserves to be in the to go list.
Amazing food and friendly people. Local favorite. The lines move quick! Really great prices for the size of the baked goods
Their bakeries are just "ok", not much surprises. However, staffs' manner is pretty "impressive". Two of them stand in the front just like wooden poles with no reaction to what I've asked for. I was thinking I was talking to mannequins. Their expressions were blank and almost irritated as if our ordering was an inconvenience to them. The situation was very awkward and kinda funny in retrospect, but it made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the moment. We are from Boston, and proud of the taste of our extraordinary bakeries which definitely exceed the quality of so called "standard" bakeries!! So, if you like to enjoy your relaxing afternoon with decent cafe and bakeries, come to Boston, we have the best!!! :)
I would not miss this if you are near Portland. When you walk in the door you feel like you are at your favorite patisserie in France. I brought home pastries and bread for the family after vacationing in Maine. The pear tart is tres bon.
Superb breads, croissants, morning buns and more.
My father was a baker for 45 years, and when I was moving up to Portland, one of his baking compatriots took me aside and told me to go to Standard. It was one of the first places I went to, and it's remained one of my favorites since! Absolutely fantastic, rustic-oriented pastries and bread.
Love this place, the servers are incredible!!
French bread is great
Never a disappointment. Great bread items, scones, dessert items and more
I loved the croissants, delicious, freshly made. Highly recommend
Terrific bakery to grab a cup of coffee and get fresh baked pastries and bread. Fast service and friendly staff. This is take away place, but they do have a few tables outside - weather permitting.
Everything is so buttery and delicious. If you’re watching your weight, at least go in for the smells :)
Had a croissant and breakfast bun. Both were delicious!
Best bread in Maine.
Awesome friendly staff
Delicious pastry and artisan breads. Well worth the wait in line.
A great bakery with wonderful breads and pastries!
Average bakery with limited variety. It’s in a trendy spot so there’s a line; the line doesn’t = amazing.
Hard to see off the street, set back. Once you are inside though, you never want to leave! Got 4 or 5 different things, all were delicious.
One of my favorite places! We even too a behind-the-scenes tour.
great bread. coffee, and outdoor seating under the grapevines to enjoy them
Amazing staff & delicious, fresh baked goods!
Phenomenal bakery. Everything I tried was great. Large selection of sweet and savory baked goods.
This bakery is amazing. They sell some of the best bread and pastries you could ever find. Amazing!
Did some research on things to do before coming to the area and over and over, this place came up. Theres parking in a lot in front that you pay for or you tell the parking attendant that you're there to visit the bakery and it's free but only for 15 minutes. A bit crowded when you walk in but worth the wait. Staff not totally friendly nor enthusiastic but the pastries were good, wholesome, fresh and worth the stop. Mostly breads but great breakfast options too. Best part is that they use some organic ingredients that are sourced from Maine and Canada. Overall, we felt rushed and environment was impersonal but good food.
Fantastic breads and pastries. We make multiple stops here when we vacation in Portland, and one last stop at the end to bring some home with us. Whole wheat miche and breakfast buns are our favorites. Just wish they had espresso and cappuccino.
Always consistent, high quality, and good variety. Get here as early as you can!
Amazing place!!! The pastries were perfect-not too sweet. I could go there everyday.
Fresh pastries, great service and good coffee.
Most amazing baked goods ever tasted!
Totally misnamed -- This bakery is exceptional! Basically pick up and go, although there are a few seats outside. Local sourcing of organic grains combined with great technique produce exceptional textures. Highly recommended.
Prosciutto and cheese is delicious.
Best baguettes locally (IMO, along with nearby Rosemont Market and Bakery). Delicious other breads and pastries. Coffee available. Free parking (sometimes with a bit of a wait).
Some of the best baked goods in New England. French/American style Changes day to day No creamy cakes or pastries, but bread/floor based tarts/Danishes Different breads Can sell out early
Yummie
AHH-mazing! Stopped here for coffee and breakfast. Their berry muffin was incredible - chock full of blueberries and topped with a delicious crumble. They also made the bread we had with dinner at Fore Street last night which was fabulous.
Omg they have the most amazing pastries and breads and the service is quick and the people are friendly.
Best bakery!! pastries etcetera all beautiful but my favorite is the olive bread and baguette and pain au levain. You cannot go wrong
Tried a croissant and a warm chocolate cookie. Excellent!
This bakery has a small selection of great pastries and bread. The baguettes are amazing and made to the French tradition, a gem to find as a European! I was disappointed in the bread though, it wasn’t any better than what you can find in a supermarket. There’s also no seating inside and only limited seating outside. There is free 15-minute parking in front of the bakery though, which is very nice!
Go early in the morning otherwise not much left late in the day
Excellent on all levels! Must stop whenever in Portland!
Delicious morning buns with perfect balance of sugar and cinnamon!
Great bread, reasonably priced boutique style bakery. Free parking, fast in-and-out.
Best bread and coffee
Seems a bit unkempt when walking in. Doorway crowded and not much remaining around 2pm. Not sure why the high stars, maybe I missed something special??
Arrived bright and early and walked into a beautiful busy little shop. Amazing display of so many baked goods. Tried the proscuitto croissant the almond croissant and a few others. Everything was wonderful. Unforgettable.
I am a repeat and proud customer of this place. Highly recommended.
Amazing pastries and breads. Perfect for breakfast or finding some to go in a picnic or with a meal. The staff is amazing. You must try the Morning Bun with walnuts!
Wow did we find a gem. Coffee and bakery. Incredible. It is. Walk the streets with a warm pastry in hand. Just an amazing morning.
We had super treats that we carried on our drive. Cookies were the best ever. A few parking spaces at the front door.
Absolutely the best. Especially the croissants.
If you come in too late good things may be gone. Get ready to fall in line and know what you want, and you'll be all right. Best bakery in town.
Top-rated bakery, a short walk away from the East End Beach, nice to stroll down and pick up a scone or a croissant snack reward.
Some of the best baked good I’ve ever had. A definite must-visit spot while in Portland.
Wonderful bread And pastry. Is probably the best in Portland
Baked goods are to die for! We were lucky enough to get the last almond croissant and it was deserving of ALL the hype (especially as I deviated from my normal order of pain au chocolat). Coffee was great and we also added an olive roll, which I couldn’t stop snacking on.
Made a stop here today to grab some pastries! We had the whole lemon tart, the rustic apple pie, pain au chocolat and the chocolate sables. They were all delicious! My favorite was the whole lemon tart! Would love to have that again! The service was amazing too - friendly and helpful!
Unbelievably delicious. Bought several items and each were amazing.
Always the best bakery in Portland. The oatmeal raisin cookies are the best I've ever had. The bread rivals that of San Francisco. It's an accomplishment!
I have loved their bread for 20 years, and finally had the chance to try the croissants, cookies, and to get several baguettes. I have missed this place so much! The croissants are to die for, and I loved the chocolate sea salt pecan cookies. Thanks a million!
The best in tow of maine
Great Bakery! Incredible pastries and the best Morning Buns!
I have been twice now and both times service was very quick and the pastry/bread has been phenomenal. The croissants and the rustic apple tart are perfectly flakey and delicious. Can’t wait to go back and try more .
Delicious bakery, apparently they distribute to a lot of restaurants in Portland Maine. Quite a small selection of baked goods but they were very solid choices and great for breakfast. I had some sort of tart with sliced apples or similar fruit and it was super good.
I never miss a visit here when I'm in Portland. Sometimes I drive all the way from MA just for those morning buns. Don't miss out.
Speechless! Was recommended by a friend as a must see on our trip to Portland and it did not disappoint! It is a small bakery but full of deliciousness and they had great coffee too! Definitely a must try!
Good bread can be very difficult to find in this country. Not at Standard - their bread is proper and their light and flaky croissants & bold, rich and dark coffees deserve mentions, too. I live in Portsmouth, NH, so I don't visit often, but wanted to share with the people at Standard that in my opinion, Portsmouth is underserved by bakeries and that a bakery like Standard would be very successful here.
I'd like to say that this bakery stands as one in a million. The prosciutto assiago crossant was so scrumptious. Flakey & full of flavor. I keep asking myself Why didn't we buy more? Stop in. You will not be disappointed.
This is a must go place if you are visiting Portland. Financier is my favorite. They make the best fudge in Portland.
The have a great selection of breads and pastries. My main complaint is that the last time i was there flies were buzzing around and landing on the food. Not appetizing at all. Please do something about the flies in the summer time.
Excellent bakery!
Great selection of muffins, scones, and etc. Coffee also. Benches and two small tables outside. Friendly service. Very close to the ferry terminal (walkable).
We got a viraty of pastry’s all of them were absolutely delightful I highly recommend this bakery!
Sure, it’s a good bakery. But ... it’s busy, overpriced, coffee is average (no espresso, just brewed FYI) and no place to sit comfortably. I’d rather have good coffee, mediocre pastries and be able to enjoy both for just a few minutes. I’d eat it again, but won’t fight the crowd or go out of my way for it again.
Incredible baked goods!
One of Maine's very best bakeries.
The croissant and blueberry muffin were very good
Good bakery goods, going back soon
FANTASTIC bakery. The baguette was amazing.
The food tastes horrible. Everything is stale, and some are hard to bite on. I'd never come here again.
One of the reasons people move to Portland. Great place for a weekend treat!
This bakery is at a pretty rare level of quality. My wife and I are big into these types of small, artisan bakeries, having been to some of the best around the states. This one nails a lot of commonly botched items like brioche and croissants. The standards are taken to a new level. Grab and couple of baguettes, and don't even think twice about it! This place is awesome.
Fantastic dark roast coffee. So delicious that we went back around for second cups before we left the area. Staff was helpful and courteous. Will definitely visit again when able to.
Excellent bakery right off the waterfront. Exceptional breads, croissant, buns.... I am obsessed with the Pecan Financiers! Highly recommend, long summer lines.
Yum!! We wish they had a place to sit but the food was yummy! We had a savory and a sweet. Very good!!
Best and most beautiful treats and breads. Excellent service!
Not much of a variety of breakfast items. But plenty of baked bread
We got there a few minutes after they opened and there was already a line out the door, always a good sign! Staff was friendly and efficient. The breads and pastries were amazing! We got an assortment including some croissants, pastries, and loaves of bread. The prosciutto croissant was awesome. We very quickly consumed them once we were in the car. Will definitely be back the next time we're in town! Parking can be a little tricky in that part of town, so try to get there early.
Tough to decide what to get......
Really good pasterys, breads and coffee. The coconut macaroons are awesome as are the morning buns.....and the French baguette lol. Hey....I was hungry.
The best bakery in Portland...no contest.
Honestly amazing! There is always a short fast moving line and everything is baked super fresh. I had the morning bun with walnuts, which was like a lightly toasted cinnamon bun. Amazing!
Delicious baked goods. Get there early and expect to wait in line.
This place has amazing bread and baked goods. The prosciutto assiago croissants are phenomenal. You can grab a cup of coffee, too.
