This Bakery is classified in the category of American restaurant.
Always a great brunch. The only problem with the Lobster Benedict was that I finished it. So delicious!
One of the finest restaurants in Hallowell. Quality food, colorful environment, and a very friendly staff.
I'd sure like to tell you what the food is like but I can't. We called for a reservation the night before and we're told they were busy closing and we wouldn't need one. We called in the morning before we went and no one answered the phone. Then we showed up only to be asked if we had a reservation because they were completely booked for the entire day. So I guess I can only rate the customer service at this point.
Serving great , creative food for over 30 years with a side of local music and a double scoop of artwork!! Wendy has been a massive force and leader in Hallowell supporting so many humanitarian issues with countless benefits, money raised, donations given and spirits lifted.... decade after decade..... More then a gem in Hallowell....she is a diamond. Bruce Mayo
Artsy atmosphere and delicious food. Very strong drinks!
Cozy venue with great food!
Owner used derogatory words, racial slurs and threats towards an employee. Can't support a company who won't even support their own staff.
The service and food cannot be beat. We arrived on a Saturday night at 7 PM to find a jampacked restaurant with live music. The staff wasn’t panicking nobody was yelling. We had a wonderful corner booth and everything from the complementary fresh baked bread with oil for dipping, to the brie with fruit and more fresh baked bread. Topped that with a delicious boursin cheese Tenderloin steak cooked to perfection with onions and mushrooms and a sherry sauce. The food was incredible the service was outstanding. Five stars all the way I can’t believe it’s so close to my house and I didn’t know it
Great tasting, freshly made food. Lively atmosphere. Highly recommend Slates!
Dirty dishes hair in my son's food
Food was delicious but service was lacking.
Great atmosphere, creative menu. Everything's homemade.
The food is wonderful but I love just stoping in for a cocktail.
It's an older place the service was great the food was good . Prices where reasonable.
Great atmosphere. Gives you a family connection. Food is outstanding and the drinks are amazing.
Inviting staff and service. Like home. Great bars and dinner service
Please smell the mussels before you cook them. One bad dead mussel really DOES ruin the whole meal.
Great food and the waiter Chris was professional, attentive and fast! Excellent experience overall for some Californian visited small town in Maine.
Great food and great staff.
THE place in Central Maine for fine dining. In the heart of beautiful and historic Hallowell. Enjoy!
Wonderful little place. Great food. Staff attentive.
Awesome smoked shrimp and caramelized onions benedict... Delicious bloody martini... Short wait, lovely staff. Overall a wonderful brunch experience.
Excellent crepes, and the chicken sausage pizza is really really good!
Wait staff are very courteous and prompt..good was delicious..
Omg the spicey Margaritas here are amazing!!!! Food is very good as well.
Wonderful pastries at the bakery. You won't be disappointed.
a special , colorful , artistic , unique , fun place with great food - such a happy place for our family celebration
What a local stalwart pillar of fine "boho chic" dining, but it isn't out in, it's real bohemian and supportive of the culinary, graphic, and performing arts. Slates was 'farm to table' before it became a 'thing.'
I ordered (and ate) the Organic Greens Salad with Steak and it was excellent. The staff was very friendly and a cool atmosphere. Supposedly the have live music some nights (although, we didn't happen to visit on a music night).
Fun place to eat. Atmosphere is unmatched, and the food is too notch.
Creative and delicious food, in a fun and funky ambience
My husband and I were visiting from out of town and we were recommended to go to Slates. The hostess was delightful, super nice and helpful. I wish I could say the same about our waitress, Jane. She was unbelievably rude and had no knowledge of menu items. She acted like it was a terrible inconvenience to tell us what was on tap. She was offended when we asked for more bread and the food took nearly an hour to get to us. We ordered a burrito and a burger. Food was good but not hot. I’m just disappointed that our last night here, meant to be a special dinner was not very pleasant.
Cozy, great martinis, really good seafood chowder, service is wonderful. Slates is right on the main drag (Water St) in Hallowell - a fun little town of shops and antiques. Slates never disappoints!
They did a great job accommodating our group of 26 people, food was out of this world and the service matched!!!
Food still good, place isn't what used to be.
Always lots of choices with different pairings and very good albeit a bit pricey.
Delicious hummus and appetizers
Foodie favorite
Not impressed at all. Overly complicated dishes, loud and cramped and our waitress was not very accommodating.
I hear the owners are terrible employers and support and enable the existence and perpetuation of white supremacy. No thanks.
Had such a lovely brunch here. We both ordered two plates because it was too hard to just pick one
We have enjoyed going to Slates for over 15 years. The last few times have been incredibly disappointing. We felt like maybe it was just a bad night and went back again. Have always liked the funky ambiance and food. Our last dinner there was awful. We were seated under the stairs. My husband is tall and had to duck to sit down. Waitresses were bumping into my seat while they tried to squeeze by. Our nachos were not cooked, cold shredded lumps of cheese under the layers of chips. Our cocktails were disgusting. Our meal was completely flavorless. So disappointed, their attention to detail is completely lost.
Hot cider on a chilly day... Flatiron steak basil eggs Benedict was all amazing!!! Oh and coconut blueberry bread.. I also ate strawberry rhubarb pie... No pic. We stopped in bakery next door for pumpkin chocolate chip cookie.. Must visit this place again!!!
What a great find for a Monday night! Homey and welcoming, happened across a night with live folk music.
Great food, service and atmosphere!
If you don’t have time to dine in, I highly recommend a visit next door to the bakery, with many delicious options, including veggie and gluten-free. Great stop for a quick bite, with shady outdoor garden tables, or grab something to go.
The food is always very good with an eclectic menu featuring always fresh seafood. I've always had good experiences and service here. The only thing I don't love is their new location. I was recently there on a very cold Maine night and the restaurant was cold causing the food to be cold. In the new building, the open kitchen is right across from the entrance. I was sitting upstairs, so by the time the food go to me, it was warm at best. I'd love it if they could figure something out to keep the restaurant and the food warmer when it's cold.
We held a rehearsal dinner here and the food and service were phenomenal! Plenty of parking even with all of the construction outside!
I took a bite before I took the pic. Couldn't help myself. Wendy can cook a steak like no other! The smashed root vegetables and roasted carrots were out of this world. I love eating at Slate's!
Hair in the food my nizzle
Great food and dining in the Central Maine area. Whether you go to Slate's for dinner, brunch, or a musical event, it always enjoins you in a friendly environment with high quality food and wait staff.
This location is a staple of Hallowell and has been a part of the town for decades. Food is sourced locally and is rotated frequently. The decor is bohemian with local artists featured and often available for purchase right off the wall. The Sunday brunch is a must but get there early because there will be a line since there are no brunch reservations. I have eaten here since before I was born and have never been disappointed. Tenderloin w/ Borsin is a favorite and one of there giant ginger snap cookies with a coffee is a great way to finish a meal.
Great food with an intimate atmosphere.
Amazing food and great, quaint atmosphere. The nachos were sublime. Staff was friendly. Definitely going back.
Would be 5 starving food didnt take soooooooo long to come out.. worth the wait.. but soooo slow
I have a habit of complementing other food on the basis of Slates . Weather it be a delicious scone or a kick ass chicken pot pie. The review is always the same "Wow this is is like Slates!". Few understand what I mean by this random statement ...but for those who do get it are no surprisingly really cool people. Enjoy the entire atmosphere from beginning to end. Muah!!
Great food. Great service. Friendly staff and patrons.
Slates is a perfect place to meet a friend. The service is very pleasant and unhurried.
A little cramped inside, but the food is worth it. I typically have great food and drinks for brunch. You can also go off menu, one time I was able to get eggs benny even though it wasn't on there. I would not recommend their huevos rancheros though.
Wendy is THE best! Good food, great service and very attentive staff
Always enjoy Brunch there. Favorite crab, tomato, basil Benedict.
My last review was a mistake on my part. Let me say slates is an amazing place to eat. The owner is extremely friendly and easy to talk to. The food is amazing. Highly recommend!!
The food here is great. The staff were friendly. I went there on a busy night and the food came very slowly. The wait was my only complaint. Everything else was terrific.
Very nice ambience, great waiter, Delicious food. I liked the fact that they had Singer/Songwriter night. I love hearing local music, and am glad they offer this.
Have always loved Slates. Glad week day fast is back
Had lunch at Slates today for the first time: the crab, artichoke, cheese and tomato on a croissant. Sounds good right? Very bland--needed more mayo, artichoke slices with heavy vinegar flavor, a very small slice of cheese and paper thin slice of tomato even the croissant was not thrilling for $14!? Definitely needs more flavor!
Casual environment with casual food at upscale prices.
Not a bad meal on the extensive menu. To top it off, the staff are great and the atmosphere is unique.
Such a great find! Fantastic food & wine, chill atmosphere, and great service! We'd come back in a heartbeat.
Great place. 4 stars instead of 5 because the place is unbelievably noisy (install some sound dampening please!) and the food, while innovative, is not always executed the best.
First visit for us, courtesy of a gift certificate from our friendly realtor. I had the excellent Cajun blackened haddock; my wife had the Reuben sandwich, which I know was good because she let me have the leftover half the next day. Funky decor, good food. We'll be back.
Great atmosphere, great food, great service!
Excellent food, attentive service, accompanied with great live music (it was one of their Monday concert series). I had the Seared Scallops (over home made noodles): my wife tasted and said, "That's what a scallop is supposed to taste like!" My wife had Cashew Shrimp over rice with a ginger sauce (except they were out of cashews and substituted almonds): that was also good.
Great food, great staff. Thanks for breakfast.
Great food and a nice clean funky atmosphere.
Not very enticing
Great service, friendly staff, superb food. Interesting cocktails. Unique atmosphere with outdoor seating on a cute patio.
Best. Brunch. Ever. Lobster benedict is my favorite.
Great location and food. Sat at the windows and watched the parade while having breakfast. It was great!
Went there for dinner tonight. The food and service were excellent. Great salads (even the beets were good), main course, and yummy desserts. Service was top notch. Thank you Slates.
Locally sourced, always delicious food in a creative, colorful, artistic space. Just as Hallowell is a Welcoming City, Wendy and her crew have created a welcoming space. If you are in Central Maine, Slate’s is a must!
Totally cool (but tiny) bakery! Make sure to ask what's just been freshly baked since they add things as they come out. But don't fret too much. The cookies are both delicious and HUGE!
Not impressed. Portions were small. And prices were expensive.
Love the diversity in food, art, flowers and culture. I have been going to Slates regularly for many years. Very happy with this bar and restaurant.
Food was good, Spring Eggs Benedict and Huevos Rancheros, waitress was very good but we waited at least 45 minutes for the food to come out of the kitchen. Not worth the wait.
This place is one of a kind. I took my wife here and it felt like we were in a NYC restaurant. Awesome food and a very fun staff here. Can't wait to go back.
Fantastic brunch at Slates today. As always. We are spoiled rotten to be nearby. Thanks, Wendy and the crew!
We waited nearly an hour for our food. That in itself would have been fine if the food had been worth waiting for. My sister ordered the baked haddock which was undercooked and watery. I ordered the beef marsala which was cold. The two sides were not edible. We like to try a new place to dine out every week. This was a terrible experience. Needless to say, we will never return.
For the greater Augusta area, this is one of the best. Interesting, quirky atmosphere, fits the feel of the town and good food.
Excellent food and service!
It's Slate's. Do I really need to say more? Extensive daily specials list, great brunch, fantastic food anytime, interesting cocktail specials with friendly attentive service. My Lobster Benedict was incredible.
The meal and service was fantastic!!
Great food and friendly attentive staff. Gotta love the fresh house baked breads and other pastries!
If you are a bourgeois struggling with success, hungry for the warm and moral feeling that comes from eating "organic" and "local" rather than for actual food, you can buy some forgiveness for your privilege here. In truth, the food is good, and I enjoyed poring over the unusual selections in their menu, even if I choke on the morality a bit.
Awesome place, will be back
Great place
Not your typical greasy spoon. Healthy choices, done well.
Love this place. Curried chicken croissant is to die for.
Food was amazing and staff was remarkable. Excellent service. Had a blast. Luv the artwork in the walls and the window bench seat. And the "dark&stormy" was the best. Luv luv luv this place. Will definately be back soon
Top notch service and excellent food in an eclectic atmosphere. Downtown Hollowell is just a fantastic place to visit!
Great tasting large sandwich s
Unfortunately, tonight was a disappointment. I have never had chicken as dry as the dish I had tonight. Service was slow. Paid too much for this type of service.
I'm a vegetarian and Slates has the most interesting options for me in the whole area. Plus the vibe in the restaurant is just super fun!
Excellent offerings, great Cocktails
Creative and delicious food. This is my family's go to place for a special occasion or when we just want a good meal. Really like their specials (esp. Seafood) and vegetable side dishes. They also know how to mix a cocktail.
I love slates! Their brunch is the best I've ever had, the atmosphere it's quirky and homey. Such a great spot!
I stopped in here with a group of hungry cyclists on a Friday around lunchtime. The staff was very friendly, the food was excellent, and the restroom tidy. We enjoyed breakfast sandwiches, ice cream, baked goods, coffee, and probably more. I'll definitely return!
Food is great but takes a while. Great for dates tho
Pretentious, arrogant. Hoity - toity tree huggers.
Great service great food great atmosphere
Fun. Great food, excellent service
Friendly staff. Great food. Great prices. Great atmosphere.
The food here was amazing. Great staff and home feeling. The mango mimosa was good and refreshing.
If you're local, you already know how great it is. If you're from away like us, it's an amazing find. Not passing by Augusta be on the highway again without making this short detour.
This place is AWESOME. Aside from the food being creative, locally sourced and delicious, the owner is amazing and is super supportive of local artists. A loving and fully welcoming staff represents the best there is in Maine. They truly welcome everyone, are known for their extremely accepting views of all people and make everyone feel like right at home. If you are coming to Central Maine, Slates is a must.
This was an amazing place to have dinner. I got the lobster and artichoke dip and the seafood paella. It was delicious.
Love Slates. Love that Wendy, the owner, has been a progressive force in Hallowell for 40 years! Very welcoming inclusive restaurant.
Great food, fast service
Such a great place! Always fun cocktails and great food. Awesome vibe (very colorful tables and great art). Wish I could find excuses to go here more often!!
Awesome food and atmosphere.
One of the best dining experiences ever in 40+ years of travel and restaurants in 34 countries and 44 states!
Slates is the heart of Hallowell. Pictured is summertime outdoor seating. Local music and art, fabulous food and wonderful people.
Food was amazing. We had to wait for lunch to begin and service was great once we had a waiter.
Always great Sunday brunch. Love their bloody mary.
Crowded, happy, trendy, friendly, veggie, tasty, turquoise
Food and service were absolutely grand!
Great little restaurant. Bar scene and tables. Cute menu.
My husband and I ate here while on our road trip around Maine because of the wonderful reviews on Google. We were both very disappointed, the hostess was VERY rude and our waitress was not much better. The food was okay, nothing special. The best part of the meal was my blueberry lemonade that was very good!!
The food here was PHENOMENAL. Four of us are a wonderful dinner, and every one of us walked away ranting and raving about our plates. Best meal I've had in a long time
Great brunch.
Great coffee, friendly service
Fast service. Great food for a party of 10 for lunch.
Did not care for
Landmark dining for years with creative offerings and home made bread and desserts at just slightly above reasonable prices.
Food is good, service could be quite a bit more friendly.
Good food
Charming and CD quaint. Ingrediwnts tasted fresh, dine outside in back if you can.
One of our favorite local haunts. Excellent birthday dinner: where we have often celebrated over the last 29 years. Good food, very personable service: a local treasure that never fails to satisfy
Not a good quality place. Don't let the fake reviews fool you.
Awesome food! Fun atmosphere
Met my friend had a fantastic meal at lunch know the owner Wendy had a visit with her also
Everything is so tasty!
Take Out. Excellent Maine Blueberry Muffins and coffee. Great when you're in a rush!
Slate's is a very, very, very interesting place. Delicious and tasty food, interesting drinks, and a great atmosphere. Sincere service, no rush to get you out; just sit and enjoy. I was here with my wife on a Friday night, and they had a folksy singer on a rythym guitar singing your favorites. All this was followed by a dessert as unique as delicious! We were very pleased. A must for visitors of the area.
Cant give a review
Great breakfast! Friendly service.
Apparently this place welcomes gangs now. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Please follow us on Facebook at SNDTravels. Rugged older building downtown that creates a great atmosphere for a bistro. I had the turkey BLT with jalapeno mayo and chick pea salad. The sandwich was very good and filled with just the right amount of meat and fixings. The chick pea salad ended up with green bell peppers that I can't eat so I opted for the chips. Diane had the soup and sandwich with a potato soup and grilled turkey sandwich with grilled onions and goat cheese. The flavors came together wonderfully. We both enjoyed ourselves and the service was friendly and attentive. Recommended!
