They did a great job on my daughter's cake.she loved it I will get all my cakes from there.
Best Bakery in Louisville KY I have been to alot of bakeries around the U.S and phlens always sticks closes to my heart! Their cookies is delicious, their cakes is the best of the best and they have delicious soups And their prices are very good not to expensive! (but I do wish they would sell chocolate cupcakes with their delicious white buttercream on top!)
This place rocks. They have awesome donuts and baked goods, as well as a sandwich counter. You can't get food this good at a chain donut place.
The angel dips, are to die for. Had to share that first. When you walk in, grab a number off the counter so you can get your order in quicker! My kids do not care for their cookies. We go to another bakery for those. Their spice cake is super delicious. Pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee. Staff is friendly. You can get goods there from cheese to cakes. Parking can be a pain, but there is a small amount of parking on the side.
We choose Plehn's Bakery for our wedding based on the suggestion from a friend. We were absolutely delighted by the cake we received from them. -The process to choose what cake we wanted was very simple. We talked to one of their cake makers and gave them a photo of what we wanted. They took it from there. -We ordered a three tier wedding cake with different flavors on each tier with a swirl design aimed at feeding 200 people. It came out looking wonderful! -The cost was right on being about $640. A reasonable price for a excellent quality wedding cake. -The taste of the cake was fabulous!!! It is amazing how many wedding cakes can taste like they were made at a low end bakery. The taste of Plehn's was tremendous! The perfect consistency of firm and smoothness combined with tasty flavors.
Cute little place. Only thing is that they regularly run out of the good stuff that they offer, like the pretzel doughnuts. Get there early!
Plehn's Bakery is THE BEST!!
Creme puffs, pecan circles, long John's! Anything you get is amazing! Also, my husband's favorite is the old fashioned chocolate milk cartons!!
Amazing Danish and cakes. Love the kuchen. Country ham salad delicious!!!
Plehn’s is a first rate bakery. Their stuff is delicious and their staff is super helpful.
So delicious and clean environment! The staff are great and did I say so delicious
They did our wedding cake and it looked gorgeous and tasted fantastic! They were so easy to work with and the staff are so nice. WORTH EVERY PENNY, thank you Plehn's!!!
Great pies.
An outstanding monument to St. Matthews. No better bakery in town. Hands down.
Love this place! I'm from out of state but have family down here, and always make it a point to visit Plehn's.
Yummy
Plehn's is my favorite bakery.
Love Plehns!
The best cakes and cookies anywhere! We've gotten our cakes from here exclusively for over 20 years! Nothing else comes close!
Love their German pastries. They make the best almond macaroons too.
Cakes are very good and moist. Love this place
A little piece of Heaven on Earth! Absolutely love their donuts, sugar cookies, and more! No better bakery!
Love that they have something for everyone and the service is always great.
Was once my favorite place for cupcakes, and the cake like donuts. Went in today, counter girl just rude and couldn't give a smile at all. I'll just stick with Please and Thank You and Adrienne Cafe. You can keep your rude family business. -☆
Here from out of town. Wonderful coffee cake and. Christmas experience!!!
Wa wa we wa.
Grab a number and prepare to have some amazing treats. This is an awesome Louisville original.
Absolutely delicious! ❤️
We LOVE Plehns! The best bakery in town.
Favorite bakery in Louisville. I moved here in 1976, got married in 1977 and they made my wedding cake. I've been shopping there since.
My favorite bakery.A bit expensive though.
Great bakery, cakes, pies, pastries, bread, and donuts.
Great bakery. Everything I've ordered or purchased has been excellent.
Plehn’s Bakery is absolutely incredible. No matter how many customers there are, I’m always in and out in a timely manner. The quality of their goods is top notch. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid & cant say enough good things about it. The custard danish is my all time favorite & their cookies are a close second.
Good doughnuts/junk food
Great pastry.
This place is unbelievable . Went into plans the other day and it's the same as I remembered fifty years ago, the products were the same great stuff too. Butter kitchen, ate the whole thing!!!
They are always the best. 18 years ago they did our wedding cake and we still drive across Louisville to shop there.
Plehn's has the best donuts and pastries in Louisville. They also have great cakes, cookies, cupcakes...You can't go wrong with Plehn's.
Thank God for Plehn's pecan rolls!
My favorite
I got lost trying to find PPG the pain store. This is a bakery. It smells pleasant inside, saccarine even. The employees are friendly in a manner that makes you feel like you know them, but you do not. A man in a red sweater cut me in line. He bought biscuits and a pie. I wanted that pie but he got the last one. I had a pimento cheese sandwich. The bread was soft. The soda jerk gave me a glass of water. I should have gotten my lunch on a croissant. I will try the vegetable soup next time. What is challah bread.
Best bakery in the city, without a doubt. It's a special occasion "must have" birthdays, Holidays, birth of a baby. When you walk in a take a deep breath, I think that incredible smell is what Heaven will smell like.

I have heard such great things about this bakery, this is why I wanted to check them out for my wedding. Well let me just start by saying Elizabeth ( the lady helping me ) made me feel like I was bothering her. First off, when she came to get me the first thing she said was "can you move over here." As she sat down she seemed out of breath and tired, which I get it, your busy you have customers blah blah blah, but being in the customer service industry you should always treat every customer like 100%. Anyways she introduced her self and said "when is the wedding" I told her when, and as soon as I told her she laughed and said "we're closed on that day." I said "ok, so are you telling me I can't get my cake here" she said "I'll have to check" so she went and checked and when she came back she said "we can do it but you have to pick it up the day before" I said "ok" then she preceded to tell me how busy they are the day before and that the line is out the door. Which I completely understand, they have good pastries, but seriously their were so many nicer ways of telling me that. She made me feel like I was bothering her so much. If this is how you want to turn buisness away Elizabeth is the winner. Im very sad that this happened. I was so happy to purchase my cake here, but I will be taking my buisness elsewhere. **P.s. Phlens does not offer military discounts.
Best bakery in Louisville
This is a bakery that I remember as a child. Kind people with GREAT FOOD !
They did the cake for our wedding and it was delicious! They were so great to work with and a great price for such a beautiful cake. It was so good we barely had leftovers!
Delicious bakery goods. My favorite baskery in Louisville.
Best cakes ever!!
Best place for birthday cakes in Louisville!! Their cakes are light and airy. The icing is to die for. And even after a couple days the cake gets better as the icing becomes a little crispier (there is probably a more technical term for this). So good
There aren't enough good things to say about this place. It's perfect in every way. God tier pies, better than the hip bakery that charges twice as much. All time favorite Key Lime, Lemon meringue, and coconut cream. Cookies and baklava are amazing.... everything is amazing.
Birthday cake was great!
Best bakery in Louisville! I️ Love it! Made from scratch daily.
Plehn's is amazing. Almost every visit there has been a line out the door. They are used to it though, so they move fast! Just grab a number and wait in line. Staff is always very pleasant and accommodating. They offer enough donut options to please most any palette, and their prices are very reasonable as well. Definitely would recommend!
My family has been eating bakery goods from Plehn's for 4 generations and there is no better place we know. The kuchens, eclairs, doughnuts, and salt risen bread are what we drive over an hour for. They make it like you remember. Always professional... but tastes like Grandma's best! Reasonable prices too!
Super cute vintage bakery. They have an original marble soda counter! We didn’t try the ice cream, but got and assortment of pastries. The raspberry Kolache and apple turnovers were especially good. A customer picked up an adorable custom birthday cake while we were there, as well. They have buns, biscuits, bread, croissants, hand piped eclairs, it goes on and on. Great prices. I bought 6 different things for 10 bucks!
Every time we come into town we come here for cake and donuts. Great sweets and good prices. This place is a gem and well worth visiting.
We have been getting doughnuts from the bakery every derby day for the last 20 years. They are the best around. On this visit they had misplaced our order. To make it up to us they offered us a free kitchen! It's that kind of service recovery that keeps you in business for as long as they have been. They have my business for certain.
Always delicious and quality is consistent every time I went there. If the sweets don't give you a toothache, the staff will - they are all so sweet! I love local places like this that have been in business for so long! Because it's a popular place, it can get busy at times, so order ahead or arrive early if you are stopping in before work!
We love Plehn's bakery. We've never gotten a bad thing there. As a child my dad used to visit there on Saturday mornings to get a cheese Kuchen or a Runny Butter Kuchen. They are so good. It was always a treat to see breakfast from Plehn's.
Always good bakery goods for many years
Full service bakery with cutest soda fountain area. Excellent friendly service! We came for doughnuts, not a huge selection but will definitely supply a sugar fix.
Yummy pastries! A bit heavier than I like my donuts though.
Even though I did get the cake design that I wanted. The cake was so beautiful and tasted wonderful everyone wanted to know where I got the cake from. Even after spending the night in the fridge it was so soft and Moist. I’ll be coming back here❤️❤️❤️
Have a good selection of old fashioned baked goods. Cheese & Butter Kuches, donuts, cookies, cakes, bear claws, danishes, and they even have lunch options & an old fashioned soda fountain. They are great at accommodating for birthdays, weddings & other special occasions. My favorite is the Kaloshki.
Moist
The yum yum will change your life
Great service!
Family favorite. For the last 19 years my daughter has asked for a birthday cake from Plehn's. I think it woud actually ruin her special day if I forgot to order one.
Plehn's provided the wedding cake at my daughter's wedding on 5/25/2019. The cake was beautiful and delicious; everyone loved it.
Everything is really good or better!
Everything is so fresh delicious I am so pleased and amazed every time I visit Plehn's,the service is always cheerful and upbeat. This place has been around for 96 years and counting and has some of the best pastries, doughnuts, soups, sandwiches in the city.
Best chicken salad in the city! (Of course the bakery goods are great too!) But, this is why I love Plehn's bakery.
The cake did not meet the standarts at all for all the money they charge you for it
I have been going to Plens for over 20 years. There is so much to choose from. I love the Black Forrest cake. You take a # to be waited on. They are very fast and helpful. The wedding cakes are beautiful, you could go on and on. You just have to go there.
Wonderful selection of desserts. I never realized they had breakfast and lunch items. Will have to try lunch sandwich. First time visit. Was told this bakery has been around for a long time.
Donuts are amazing! The cream horns taste great also!
Awesome local bakery
I'm a newcomer to Louisville - only been here 20 years. My wife broke it down for me - this place has the best, old school donuts in the city. There are three places that are closer. I always go here.
Doesn't seem to be the mission but off guard becomes the goal...to eat every donut in this store each time I go.
Emily is an angel sent from heaven to give us delicious-delightful-delicate baked goods. Besides the 3 adjectives just used, the chocolate marshmallow egg pastry I ate was inexplicable. It was like biting into a cloud, but tangible. I also had the chili, BAM
Everything is made fresh and homemade.
Their cookies and cakes are the best in town!
The best cakes! Custard cream center is a must try
Old fashioned bakery. Delicious cakes, cookies, and yummy chocolate eclairs
Great old school counter service, delicious pastries!
$15.60 for a dozen donuts and they were meh! And very limited selection! I will take Nords or Clifton Donuts over these, better price, selection and quality!
Some of the best, if not the best, baked goods in Louisville. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the place. Their yum yum (big donut with lots of icing) and apple fritters are to die for. That doesn't include the cakes. They make all sorts of cakes and will decorate them however you like. They are extremely talented. Only slight knock is that it is always crowded, and with it being a small store, it can be hectic. But the staff is always nice and as long as you exercise a little patience, the wait will ALWAYS be worth it
Phenomenal full service bakery. Have been there several times and service is always great and food is great as well. I usually go there right before a holiday. At that point, they are extremely busy but there are enough employees there so you don't have to wait long. There are steps to get into the bakery. I have never been disappointed with anything I have purchased there! Would recommend to everyone.
This cake was fabulous as everything always is, but we just asked for fall colorful flowers, it was exquisite! Thank you
The best bakery in the city. The food is excellent and also the staff.
I order a one layer carrot cake with light icing for my boyfriends birthday and it was delicious. Someone from the staff even called to make sure they got my order right.Highly recommend for all of your bake goods needs.
St Matthews original and best bakery
We ordered an assortment and everything was so delicious and reasonably priced. I wish I could give more than five stars.
This place is a great local bakery; I dropped by just to check it out after a stop at the nearby Jimmy John's. The staff here was helpful in helping me pick some sweets out. I got a piece of chocolate dipped angel cake, some chocolate chip cookies, some peanut butter patties and a doughnut. All were fresh and O was impressed with everything but the chocolate chip cookies, which were a little dry for my taste. The peanut butter patties were my favorite. Highly recommend.
Great donuts and they made us an amazing wedding cake
Fresh baked goods. And Smiling Faces.
BUSY, BUSY....BUT, AWESOME!
Love this bakery!
Love their baked goods. I still remember going with my mom when I was little.
Amazing bakery!
Everything is awesome!
I always trust Plehns for my cake and cupcake needs! They are the BEST!
Great food and desserts. Need a larger location
The worse experience ever trying to order a simple Angel Food Cake ? Never got the return call to confirm weather it was made or could be made to specs? After finally calling in myself to see why there's no call back, I'm kinda interrogated as if my order was bogus? AT THE LAST MINUTE an apology was given & the cake is supposed to be ready in an hour? I hope that i don't have to take more blood pressure medicine "after" my attempt to obtain my Angel Food order about an hour? Bulletin!! When i arrived i was told that the cake had ALREADY BEEN PICKED UP!!!! I don't think so? Anyhow the cake was beautiful BUT i have no intentions of going through this again :(
Best pastries in town.
I grew up ( literally ) going to this bakery. It is now my treat to introduce this bakery to others who visit Louisville. Every time I come to town I do my best to stop by and reward myself. The staff, has ALWAYS been kind and oh so pleasant to interact with. Years ago, for a short time, my grand father worked as a baker in this Louisville landmark.... this is an institution in breads, cakes, and pastries.
The best ever!
Great service great cakes !
Plehn's has the best chocolate donuts in Louisville. They make very good cakes too!
Cute place to get good bread
Always AWESOME!
I was looking for a King Cake to celebrate Mardi Gras (if you've never had one, you are seriously missing out) and saw some good reviews for Plehn's bakery, so I scheduled a pickup. As promised, it was ready on time and all my coworkers thought it was delicious. I've had King Cakes from New Orleans several times in the past 2 years, but this one was much better. It was not dried out, over frosted, or loaded down with way too many sprinkles--it was just right. I also grabbed a small pastry for breakfast, and it nearly melted in my mouth. Excellent bakery, and I will be back to try more!
Great place! A true staple of the community and great service. Highly recommend.
Friendly, bakery delights showcased and what do I chose.
EXCELLENT PRODUCTS AND LOVELY STAFF!!!
Lots of items which are hard to find. Charlotte Russe for one. Exceptionally pleasant and helpful staff. Patiently waited even when I took too long to decide. Close by parking, unusual for St. Matthews. All in all, a good old fashioned family bakery with tasty treats and a huge selection. There a lots of family bakeries in Louisville, but this one checks all the boxes.
One of the best bakeries in Louisville!
My absolute favorite place for donuts!
Visited this bakery for the first time and I am not disappointed at all. They have freshly made doughnuts and their cakes are super yummy.
Went here for a cake testing. Abigail was very patient, helpful and answered all our questions. Even attached a sketch of the cake we described. Large assortment of everything. Even sandwiches are available.
Just yummy! Very reasonable on prices too.
Although this bakery has been around for decades and I’ve been tempted by both positive reviews and window displays, this was my first year to try Plehn’s, especially since their visual presentations (especially the cakes) hinted at what I thought might be possible. I was planning a family Christmas Eve party with Tudor England as a sort of theme, so I had a few specific things in mind, particularly in regards to food. One was to have Plehn’s famous jam cake decorated with the red and white image of the Tudor Rose; second, after being impressed with the swirled cupcakes I’d seen in their windows, I wanted some with two of the predominant Tudor colors – red and green -- which would fit the season. Several months before the holidays, I got in touch with one of the owners by mail, detailing what I had in mind, and also realizing that some things might have to be scaled down so I expressed my willingness to be flexible after we talked. I had a short, one-on-one meeting with Donna about a month before Thanksgiving so we both we roughly on the same page, then met with her again in early December: the order would consist of the jam cake, cupcakes, as well as their mincemeat pie and lemon meringue pie. The order was collected very early Christmas Eve morning, and despite the crowd which was nearly lined up out the front door, we went from the numbers 44 through 58 (my number) in such quick time that I wasn’t sure how they were keeping everything straight, but the clerks were patient, efficient and managing to stay friendly despite the usual holiday rush. So a big thumbs up for the employees’ attention. Was I pleased with my order? Absolutely! The clerk serving me had already shown me the jam cake before I left the store – I’m still amazed that the Tudor Rose had been recreated so beautifully, and in such detail considering this was not a photo transfer but formed out of frosting. The cake itself was moist, flavorful, exactly what one expects out of this holiday cake; the caramel icing wasn’t overly sweet but right on the mark, and all in all, this was definitely one of the hits of the party. The cupcakes were of a simple vanilla/plain dough, but like the cake, were fresh and moist with a yummy flavor, and the frosting – which can often be overwhelming and way over the top in sweetness – was perfect, the red and green colors NOT tasting of the dyes used (I’ve found that sometimes this unfortunately happens when it’s overdone, but Plehn’s had it right!). As for the pies: both were eaten so quickly, there were barely any leftovers for some of the guests to take home; the mincemeat pie was especially popular. Neither were so sweet that the teeth were aching; the lemon meringue was tangy and tart, playing off the sugar, and the meringue itself was near perfection; the mincemeat – my first time having it – was praised as being exactly what everyone expected! I appreciated their attentiveness to what I had in mind for my party. I even loved Donna joking that her husband (one of the owners) might not like making the Tudor Rose design, but she would make sure it was done. All I can say is that Patrick did one heck of a fantastic job in copying an object of a slight complicated design, but I knew they could do it, just based on the beautiful displays in their windows and cabinets. Their prices were also reasonable: the cake was a bit extra due to the Rose but was worth it; the cupcakes averaged around $1.25 each; the pies ranged from $7.95 to $8.95. So will I use them again? You bet! In fact, when my hair stylist told me she was going to use them for her wedding cake, I told her she likely couldn’t make a better choice in bakeries. They have definitely earned my business and I can’t wait to use them again.
The artistry on the baked goods is magnificent! And that's before you even bite into their their heavenly confections.
Best for pastries and cakes everything else looks good to very friendly
Everything in this bakery is delicious. Service is always efficient as well.
Great place. So many choices. Bakery deli ice cream parlor
Best bakery on the planet!
I have been enjoying the wonderful goodies from Plehn’s Bakery for over forty years. I have so many favorites - cheese kuchen, springlees at Christmas, carrot cake, I could go on and on. Have never purchased anything there that was not delicious. I highly recommend stopping by the bakery and trying some if their wonderful treats.
Everything you want in a bakery. Great baked goods and pastries and doughnuts. Reasonable prices. Attentive service even when busy. A lunch counter with great sandwiches and soups.
Cute, great service, always busy but always good.
Like bakeries used to be with great pasties coffee cakes and cakes. Probably best bakery you can find anywhere in the state.
