I stopped on my way out from visiting Carneceria San Antonio because they are a panaderia/bakery. I posted several pics and and gave them 3 stars primarily for the bomb azz, chile rellenos!
This is a typical Mexican food type deli, where you point to what you want after you choose from the menu. The ladies behind the glass are warming up tortillas, getting your order ready and assembling the dishes.
There is no number system, so hint to newbies, get right up to the glass, try to remember where you are in line and make eye contact with one of the ladies when they yell out in Spanish "Quien sigue?" or "Who's next?"
My people are not shy about getting in front of folks they know are new to process, so don't be shy. There are a few tables, drinks so you can def eat there.
The bakery part is what you see first when you walk in and during the middle of the week, it is highly unimpressive. It is not very clean and all the glass cases are dirty and full of crumbs.
I am used to walking in and smelling fresh bread baking but I don't blame them for not baking every day. They don't have the daily clientele to do, so they may just bake it fresh on the weekend and leave it wrapped in the plastic for the rest of the week. So, you want fresh bread? Buy it only on the weekends and you'll be golden.
The best part of the visit were the two chile rellenos that I bought to go. The poor lady behind the counter just couldn't fathom that I didn't want them warmed up. She ended up warming them up slightly, putting on some legit, homemade sauce and cheese on top. They were A++++!
Here in Missouri, most of the chile rellenos that I've encountered are pretty bad...filled with that gross Provel cheese and covered in either an enchilada or mole sauce...NEITHER is supposed to go on a chile relleno but these folks got in right.
