REVIEWS OF Wayfarer Bread & Pastry IN California

Alex DeMartino

Very good bakery but nothing of any real substance. Great tasting very well made pastries, but rather expensive.

Matthew Bierwirth

Update: we came back and the entire staff was nice as can be! First of all — the bread, pastries, and sandwiches here are really, really good. The only reason I even felt compelled to write this 4-star review is because the vibe we got from the staff was just off-putting and unwelcoming. We were totally nice and courteous, and they didn’t do anything that was unprofessional or weird, they just weren’t as nice as we were expecting, I guess.

Great bakery, lots of dogs, friendly patrons and staff. The croissants

Amazing food, great people in a very chill atmosphere. Love the breakfast and lunch sandwiches!

Matt Pope

Hands down, best bread and pastries in San Diego. There is really nothing that compares.

Hannah Heimer

Creative and delicious sandwiches and bread

It is easy to miss this gem because their sign is barely visible. It is just north of the CVS. Their olive bread is so good that I would marry it. Some of the best scones and flaky pastries in San Diego. Breakfast and lunch selections change throughout the day. Excellent cappuccino. Large crowds on the weekend.

Jacqueline Brumann Neftci

amazing pastry, egg and beet tartines, and bread. we couldnt really taste the coffee but great start of opening day!

I’m impressed! I love that this place focuses on bread/pastries first, and delicious coffee 2nd. I think that’s what works for this place and makes it stand out! As a coffee connoisseur, I’ve made my way through SD coffee shops and have been disappointed when places with great potential snooze on their treats. When I got here, these delicious strawberry pastries were fresh out the oven! It’s still warm as I’m typing this now. There’s plenty of seating both inside and outside, street parking only, and unfortunately no WiFi (yet!) Really looking forward to their grand opening June 3rd!! Soft opening is 5/16-6/2. Great start, guys!!

Delicious sandwiches, really enjoyed the soft breakfast, the sandwiched had a great taste.

The owner is from the esteemed Tartine in SF and holy cow does she live up to the hype. Everything that I’ve had so far is delicious (pistachio strawberry croissant, olive loaf, strawberry galette, blueberry scone) and it’s located in a great area. They also serve Ironside Coffee which is a nice change from the Bird Rock coffee that dominates the area. Of all the things I’ve had I definitely suggest the scone which is the best I’ve ever had. They bake their loaves and baguettes fresh each day (you can also get half loaves) and they constantly change their goods according to whats in season. My only gripe is that they cater to the more well-off crowd (goods often would run you about $4-5) but is definitely worth the weekly splurge. The place also has outdoor seating and plenty of indoor space. Make sure to get there early as there is often a wait.

Anila Arif

Very expensive, not really worth the price.

Brock Weatherup

Delicious new bakery spot in bird rock. Scones....just unreal and the loaves of bread are exceptional.

I'd just been telling my wife how much I'd love to have a bakery nearby for us to visit on the weekends. Then boom! Wayfarer bread opened up and changed our life! Literally everything I've had here has been delicious. I know Bird Rock Coffee is great, but their Chai Tea has never really scratched the itch for me. Thankfully Wayfarer has a Chai Tea so good you'll be talking about it (and writing reviews about it) for weeks and weeks after you've had it. It's that good. Seriously, it's really good. Honestly, I feel excited just writing about it now. In fact, I'm cutting this review short to head over to Wayfarer now for (another) croissant. You should too.

They're pastries are amazing. I love that they'll customize their drinks to my liking. Service is always fast and friendly.

Wayfarer Breads and Pastries are tasty, light and...second only to the Bakery Building’s Historical Ramifications. Ask any late 1960 and/or early 1970 La Jolla High (School) Grad if they remember the Red Mountain Inn (circa 1966-1970) and/or the Hatch Cover (circa 1971-1974). Then, enjoy the tales they will tell about the bar-stool races and wheelie contests up and down La Jolla Blvd, the antics of The La Jolla Art Players, and borrowing (with permission and always returned in time for Sunday’s 7:30 am Mass) Mary Star of The Sea folding chairs for crowded Friday and Saturday Band Nights. Those were the days.........

Everything about Wayfarer is awesome! The location as well as atmosphere is so cute and cozy. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and excellent with customer service even under busy saturday morning pressure! I got a cappuccino and an asparagus ricotta tart and both were amazing! Wayfarer captures the essence of La Jolla and I will for sure be returning.

For me this is just yummy yummy and yummy. Definitely worth a visit. Need to get there early as I read that the pastries go fast. I saw many a car there just as the place opens. So if you're looking for a nice pastry place in San Diego, this place should not be missed. You can thank me later once you've tried.

Jann Lara

Finally made it!! Unassuming and casual spot to relax, enjoy the scenery. It definitely focuses on the bread and pastries first, set up to acknowledge this is a bakery first and rightfully so! OMG so very tasty! Love the menu set up for every meal right here. Looking forward to next Cali visit with first stop here.

Great crusty sourdough and other varieties of hand-crafted bread, pastries and sandwiches. They offer an inside dining area plus outdoor seating, depending on the weather. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood and local dining scene.

Francis Choi

Best bakery in the SD area, maybe the best croissant I've had anywhere in the world. Might seem like hyperbole but it's amazing how many layers of flakey buttery goodness there is throughout.

Mark Miller

Wonderful and talented bakery, friendly staff, great coffee.

erin bower

Our first '19 meal Had to be here to gobble Croissants that melt souls

Karena Lindstrom

Nice little bakery offering a variety of pastries and breads. They also appeared to serve some more hearty items- breakfast sandwiches, etc. We had a savory pastry with oyster mushrooms which absolutely amazing. It was baked beautifully, nice and flaky with great flavors. You could tell everything was so fresh! We also ordered a sweet pastry with pear and hazelnuts which was delicious. The person at the counter was also so nice and helped us pick out our food. We will definitely be returning for more!

Jordan Hershberger

Best pastries in SD; croissants comparable to France

Brandon Tsui

Great bread. Best ham and cheese croissant I've ever had

Bill Cray

DELICIOUS breakfast sammy and the mug for my coffee was perfect-a four finger handle as promised!!!

Confetti Darling

My favorite bakery in San Diego. The location is in the heart of bird rock, a quiet little neighborhood in La Jolla. They have ample seating, and a friendly and efficient staff. If you’re in the mood for breakfast their sandwiches are great, as is their chai latte.

erika tunney ho

The most amazing food and atmosphere

A small and skilled bakery serving fresh pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and a variety of coffee drinks. The croissant dough is buttery and flakey. The coffee roast is flavorful and includes espresso drinks, cold brew, and drip coffee. Seating is limited and the place is already popular with locals. Some items, like the salad, are only available around the lunch hour, so plan accordingly.

Richard Valentine

Lea Booth

Delicious baked goods, sandwiches, salads, and coffee. I can't resist a treat whenever I go for lunch!

Jason Kuss

Best French bakery in SD..

Revolution Church & Training Center

Literally amazing. The blueberry scone was so perfect that time seemed to stand still for the few moments in between bites. I knew I was in the presence of true artists.

Amazing breakfast sandwich. Pastries look delicious (I bought several for home). Bread is legit!

Get here early if you want a breakfast sandwich as they sell out fast but it’s the kind of place that probably enjoys the fact that they sell out early.

I died and went to heaven.... this place is SO yummy. Every pastry is fantastic and dreamy. The summer salad was refreshing. The tea was perfect. I can’t say enough good things about this place.

I drove a long way to be there right at 0730. I found a piece of furniture in their entrance, with a note saying they would be closed for several days for maintenance. Nothing on the website, nothing on Maps. Good baked goods, not yet good at business.

Linda Lewis

Of course love this place, everyone does! The food is always wonderful and so special. I only wish they would figure out a more efficient way to assist customers on busy days. Maybe add a square app. Silly long line in their hot store. Please add a second check out or two checkout lines for different things. Thank you!

In love with all these pastries and awesome bread. So lucky to have such a talented baker close to work!

Jazz Weisman

I’ve been to Wayfarer twice now and it’s been awesome both times. The croissants are better than I’ve had almost anywhere except Paris or Tartine in San Francisco (where the owner of Wayfarer worked for 5 years), and the condiments buns are stunning. The multi seed sourdough is also fabulous with a nice crust and a moist open crumb, and a strong toasted seed flavor. The rye bread is different from any I’ve had before, with a firm crust and very moist, almost doughy crumb with crunchy sprouted seeds through, very tasty.

scott huennekens

Amazing breakfast sandwich and their bread is like being back in Paris!

Isabella Policaro

Disgusting

Wow wow wow.. their pastries are on point.. and very picky abt pastries. The honey croissant melted in my mouth.. if want a perfect pastry, this is the place.

Artun K

The baker is very talented and passionate about her trade. Having grown up in Europe I have been exposed to many pastries and bread types, this is as close as it gets in San Diego and even better. All the pastries are organic and very fresh. I love the croissants which are flaky and the bread. Great addition to the neighborhood and to San Diego!

Brian Seymour

Excellent bread, pastries and coffee. The croissants are legit and much needed in north county. Weekly bread pickup program available too to support the new brick and mortar location. Try the savory mushroom pastry!

Maggie Rivers

Cute place with good pastries. I ordered a candied kumquat cream bun and a berry scone—the scone was massive! I just wish they clearly labeled their prices somewhere. I paid $9.50 for my pastries.

Esther Yu

Soooo good

Woke up with a huge craving for Wayfarer, but unfortunately it would take several plane rides to get there. I had one of their BLT Sandwiches and my sister had their vegetable one, and they were both delicious. The turmeric latte, and the 3 other pastries I got from them were all a 10/10. I didn’t get to take pictures because I was so caught up in the moment and everything was gone by the time I remembered. I have many reasons to go back to wayfarer, and hope to do so in the near future. Till then I have my pastry memories from them to keep me going

Graeson Rosales

This place has a cool location and there pastries are really good especially the apricot cream bun. The servers are nice and the food is good. Recommend trying it.

Dani Santi

Vale a espera na fila.

Bill McGirr

The best bread I’ve had in a long time. Right up there with Tartine!!

Rob Roy

Some of the best breads and pastries you could want from an alum of Tartine in San Francisco. Made fresh throughout the day but get there early for some items like the cinnamon buns. Warm friendly staff and happy clientele. Lines can be long but usually move quickly and it's worth the wait.

Victoria Rose

Absolutely amazing bakery! Pizza night is extra special and well worth the wait. Everything is fresh and the bread is the best I’ve had in San Diego.

I drove a very long distance for nothing , they have just a sandwich at the time that we arrived.

Great bread

J Arsivaud

Absolute best bread in San Diego county, and that is from a French expat who knows her bread:) I used to trek to Praeger's Brothers in Carlsbad, now I trek to La Jolla to get their delicious loaves. To be fair Praeger's also makes excellent bread, but Wayfarer's has better crumb, the crust is consistently both chewy and crusty and just on the right side of almost burned, which I love, and it also lasts for several days no problem (if you can resist eating the whole thing!). Highly recommend their fruit galettes, the buttery crust and just tart enough filling is worth the trip. Croissants and other viennoiseries are very good but a bit too crusty to the taste of most of my (American) family. I think Darshan in Encinitas may still make the best croissants in town:)

Bertrand Nocella

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! And I know what I'm talking about, since I'm French...

After hearing good things about this place, I decided to give them a try. I stepped up to the pastry case and stood waiting to be helped along with 2 other customers who were already in the middle of ordering. There were 3 employees behind the counter 2 girls and a guy and all 3 focused in on the 2 ladies ordering and no one acknowledged me or said "someone will be right with you" or something! They were all content focusing on the ladies ahead of me and not multi tasking by engaging the next customer(me). After waiting, another guy comes in and stands next to me and the male employee says "can I help you" to him and totally blows me off after I had patiently stood right in front of him a solid 5 minutes while all 3 employees chatted with the customers next to me. The place was not crowded, it was 10:30a and the pastry case looked like the shelves of a Russian market during the Cold War days. Slim Pickin's and mostly just savory stuff left. I guess they sold out of sweet pastry? If so, then good for them, but how about making more?!!! I bought nothing, left and went to the the French Pastry shop where I bought an assortment of pastries for my employees back at work. Sorry Wayfarer but you lost a customer and will lose more with that kind of service.
