Delicious food!! Both the pastries and the main dishes. Affordable.
Esther's is one of the best places around. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious, and the beer is actually German. Try the spätzle!
Great first experience
Your staff was so amazing, Ronan especially went the extra mile to help me out! Food was delicious!
Solid breakfast choices. Definitely reminds me of the options I've seen in Germany.
Sweet little place with really good,German food. Specifically the desserts are delicious and not too sweet like in many other places.
Nice place, always go there for the weisswurst, unfortunately they only serving it till lunchtime. I asked them to make please for me and they did, thank you
All bread items are freshly baked. They serve breakfast and lunch, German style. Their menu is small and good (the place is small too).
Great deserts and good German beer
Great choice for lunch .. the salad is good , and the choice for pastry .
Always good German baked goods and great little beer garden!
One of my favorite spots, particularly for weekend breakfast. I highly recommend bringing a friend and splitting the Shlemmer, perhaps add an apple pancake for something sweet. As for bakery options the cakes, pies, and roll/pretzels are fresh and leave nothing to be desired. There is also a small selection of German grocery goods that are fun to peruse and occasionally take something home - like potato chips in a flavor that isn't usually offered in the US.
Nice and cozy place to go with family or friends, food is good there and beer us good too.
The pork schnitzel and bratwurst sausage were delicious!
Awesome place! Thanks!
Good service, nice people. I love the chocolate and raspberry cake. The place is cozy and comfortable.
I enjoyed the German pancake with apples. It is not like a Dutch pancake. It's more like a dense crepe. My hubby and my son ordered omelettes. They were decent. Nothing special about German coffee- tastes like any other house coffee. Their desserts and pretzels are so delicious, especially the triangular shape shortbread with a layer of raspberry topped with almond slivers and then the edge is dipped in chocolate- heaven!!! My hubby and I came back a few weeks later and tried the dishes in the photos below- amazing!!!
Great little German restaurant and bakery. The bee sting cake is amazing
I was quite excited about visiting this place, but a little disappointed afterwards. The cafe has a nice ambience, and primes you for an authentic experience. However, the pretzels we ordered were ok, and so too the currywurst with sauerkraut. Perhaps you really have to know what to order of the menu.
The food here is homey and comforting. The pastries are indulgent.
Excellent bakery. The twisted long breads ( crunch sticks) are the best. They just melt into your mouth, so full of flavor.
A business colleague recommended this place while I was on business travel. It is a small place, but it was a great experience. The food was delicious - the various desserts are great too! The staff is very friendly and very willing to help you with the menu!
Delicious omelet and oh so good bread. Small cozy restaurant with a bohemian flavor
Good food and good service.
Love their food. Their pancake with apples is out of this world. Parking can be tough at peak hours.
Amazing products, nice flair, very good service.
Really cute little place! The guy helping us was really nice and super helpful. I highly recommend the fried potatoes and hot chocolate if you want something other than their great desserts!
What a charming place! Friendly service, very tasty food, and reasonable prices given the portions. Edited to add: Great coffee, too... very smooth and rich! And today I met the famous Esther! Some recommendations: - Get there early; I arrived at 11am and seating was very limited! - Go with a friend and share two entrees: an omelet and the apple pancakes. The latter is huge and -- though delicious -- a bit heavy for one person to eat alone.
Food is very good, coffee and baked goods are awesome so is the beer!
So delicious! Loved the currywurst!
Great homemade German food with some classic dishes. A small selection of some good German beers. Cool lil beer garden out back
Service was awesome. The food was very bland, not much flavor for German food. The Bakery items looked very good. I'll stay away from the food and go with breakfast and pastries.
Always great authentic German food at very reasonable prices. Quick service too.
Cozy atmosphere with what I hope is authentic German fair. Great prices, just make sure to arrive early as parking can be troublesome.
One of the few places you can get authentic European baked goods.
Best place for coffee and breakfast in Mountain View.
Currywurst was a more than reasonable portion for the price. Sausage itself was excellent. Better than many in Germany and certainly better than nearly all readily available in the US. The tomato sauce felt a bit too ambitious for a humble currywurst though, and that aside was very cold, which was jarring. Adequate curry flavour however and a large, fluffy bread roll accompanied the meal. Took away a loaf of bread, also reasonably priced, which is quite delicious. San Mateo's new Backhaus should give these guys a run for their money (Backhaus is flawless), but the bread (Mehrkorn Brot) was also delicious, containing chopped walnuts within it. Satisfying experiences overall. Would return. Staff were not German-speaking, in case this point is relevant to those visiting.
Really liked this place. Great desserts, friendly staff. Didn't get to try their other foods, but they looked great. Will have to come back and try them. Quaint little place, nicely decorated with German things.
Very delicious, feels like a grandmothers food. Authentic, cozy and the best snitczhel around.
The Schlemmer Breakfast is the best!
This place had delicious, authentic-tasting German food that was, frankly, better than anything I had in the three weeks I spent in Germany. Free refills on coffee is a nice touch, too. Would definitely recommend.
Parking is a bit tricky. There are more spots in the back and on the sides. For ordering, you will have to go to the register and order there. You will be given a number stand for you to bring to your table/seating of choice.
$5 radler (lemonade or Sprite), $5 hot chocolate (7/10). The German pancake was moist and soft. The decorations reflect the bakeries origins. There's a bier garden in the back. Parking is very limited.
Nice little German bistro. Bavarian breakfast was on point and similar to what I have had in Regensburg.
Awesome atmosphere and mouthwatering food. The pretzel rolls are delicious. Beer selection is small but decent (and German). Parking can sometimes be tricky.
great place
Absolutely fantastic food. Great atmosphere. Most of the staff is friendly and kind too.
Great (authentic) German food and baked goods!
love the small biergarten in the back. really good, authentic food. the pastries are good, but not as good as the meals. always friendly staff.
The Challah bread was fresh and delicious. Good place also for a morning coffee
Had a Weisswurst after a long time.. not something that you generally see at German restaurants in the US. It was pretty good considering that it wasn't freshly made. The waiter said that they get it from a local distributor... Normally, Weisswursts are consumed soon after preparation.. the only downside was that the pretzel, although very good, was served cold (like it was thawed out of a refrigerator)..will definitely go back for it though..
A rare find in Los Altos - a restaurant with a soul. The food is pretty good and the beer is excellent.
Pricey but good food. I am not familiar with real German food, but I find the food here yummy. Love their pretzel selections too - the best I've had! The kid-friendly seating next to some kids toys at the back is convenient for parents, although the toys are old, and the benches a bit too narrow to be comfortable. Service is variable. At least one of the ladies at the counter is a bit grumpy most of the time. I almost feel as if I have to please her to order there. The owner is friendly, so is some of the other staff.
Great vibe and delicious fresh-baked pretzels. Closest thing I've found to authentic German food in the Bay Area. Back porch area has a small biergarten feel. Limited but solid selection of german beer. Good for any meal of the day.
Wonderful little cozy place, did try chocolate Poppy seed, what a tasty treat!!!
Wonderful German food and lunches, try the smoked specials!
Came for the very good Capucinno. Stayed for the October fest! Saw Heidi and the St. Pauli girl! Could almost see the Alps! Will come back..
Great food. Nice folks.
Love this place! So delicious!
Awesome German food
It probably wasn't necessary to get 4 slices of cake + coffees for the 2 of us, but it had to be done. There are so many dessert choices and we pretty much wanted all of them. I'm not going to go into describing everyone one of them because you can't go wrong with any. They were all super fluffy and moist and had the perfect amount of sweetness. If I had to choose my faves, it would be the napolean and the raspberry cake. Overall, I would drive all the way back for another slice... or two...
If you enjoy a traditional German breakfast, then this is your first adress. Nice and comfy place with really high quality foods.
Delicious overfilled omelets, great coffee, attentive service.
I love this place! The food is amazing and is always fresh. I just wish it was bigger.
great bakery have a good selection. the food is good.
Cozy, home-y feel to this charming little gem. The food was tastier than we expected. Big portion plates, decent price, and great customer service. Glad we found this place and will definitely be coming back !
Didn't have any cooked meals, just came for coffee and deserts. Not enough spaces for parking. Ordered latte and 3 different kind of deserts. Unfortunately, none of them impressed me, one of them was highly recommended by the staff and it was the worst.
Great coffee and espresso plus super good German poppy seed pastries, pretzels, cakes and German breakfast, lunch and dinner fare. Lovely patio in back! German beer and wine served too.
Great food and choices
Cute cozy cafe/bakery. Good food, nice outdoor seating and the pretzels here are delish.
good German bread. nice beer garden. great for Sunday brunch
German Style pastries and Biergarten. They hold every year the Oktoberfest with bands and everything. It is a quiet place a great spot to meet family and friends. They even have a children corner.
Very charming European style café with a big patio. The food is nice.
I wanted to love it more, but the lack of cheese variety on the cheese plate put me off a bit.
Trivia here is the bomb, win free beer and pretzels! Every Wednesday night starting at 7. The food is also great, highly recommend the Jaeger Schnitzel.
Great beer and German pastries.
Pretzels are really good (have to be eaten fresh), but their breakfast was rather average. German ingredients are a great touch, but overcooked eggs are dry, nonetheless.
Delicious German food at a reasonable price.
Fantastic local German Bakery that has phenomenal breakfast omellets, breads and sausages! We celebrated Oktoberfest with live music and great food! Best for breakfast and dinner!
Liked the place! Coffee (I.e. cappuccino) was quite bitter, but the sausage with omelette and bacon was great! I'd recommend this place and will come back again
I've had their chicken schnitzel, and the entire plate tastes extremely authentic, almost as if you're in Wien.
We arrived a little early for lunch so breakfast the only option. By the time we were served we were 15 minutes into the lunch hour. Food was great atmosphere was good I may or may not return based on the time it took to get our meal... almost 45 minutes.
Interesting to try German food. We were here on that very hot day (~100F) and their AC was broken, so we sat in the patio, but it was also too hot. That made it harder to enjoy the dinner, specially since the water was also not iced/cold. A bit expensive, but worth it. Just didnt like the sides on the meats, would prefer potato or bread!
We loved to go here. For 15 years. But since Easther sold this place, things are going downhill. Service lacks. They are friendly but don't seem to care. Tables are not cleared. Food is mediocre. Schnitzel are prefab, just heated. Schweinshaxn tasted tired, skin not very crispy. On 4 wines, they were out of 2. Beer was good. Not sure we'll be back, though
The French toast is great. Love the large serving of fruit it comes with.
I’ve knows this place for years, and it’s always been satisfactory and more. Today, I ordered beef rouladen with black beer, and, as always, I loved it!
Really nice but the schedules during Sundays are not the best
One of the best breakfast experiences I've had in Mountain View. I'll be sure to go there next time I visit.
Love this place very nice very clean lovely personel
My favorite German restaurant/bakery in bay area. Food is always good. The ambience is a big old, but it's very gemütlich.
Great bakery! Everything is super fresh and very tasty!
Absolutely loved this restaurant. Staff were very friendly and quick to serve our table. I highly recommend ordering the butchers block.
The Pretzels are amazing
Straight ahead German food and beer.
It is my second time and I am very disappointed with customer service. Apple strudel is ok, but not as good as I expected according to reviews. First time it was good, but now I do not think I will come back again.
Delicious German food, inexpensive compared to other German restaurants! Highly recommend the pork shank (call ahead to reserve either half a shank for $15 or a full shank for $25). You can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but their pork shank and pork schnitzel are highlights! I haven't had a chance to try their baked bread and other goods (as I am always stuffed after eating their cooked dishes), but they do look tasty!
Classic potato pancakes - very testy. And perfect poppy seeds cake. I tried two things and that was amazing, taste like from childhood. Definitely very good, testy place :)
This is a very unique place serving up authentic German apple pancakes, pretzels, and sausages. A nice and cozy ambience makes it a local favorite brunch spot.
Delicious german food. Loved the pretzels.
Probably good for dinner, but they have less food for lunch.
Good place. It's not very German.
One of our favourite restaurant for german food. Good coffee, very flavorful beef rouladen. Pork schnitzel was overcooked but over all it was still a good experience.
I loved the spinach pie, and so did my 8 month old baby. Kids' play area was appreciated by her older brothers (and their parents). It's a nice kid friendly touch that is common in Germany but not so much here. They offer a reward to kids who help clean up (they can pick from a box of small plastic toys). It really motivated the kids to clean up the toys, which is nice for both leaving the area neat for others and for teaching kids to clean up in general.
Loved the radler (pilsner with lemonade) and smoked pork chop; both firsts for me
Good coffee in a neighborhood surrounded with chain coffee shops
Love this cozy place for some german comfort food. I ordered the curry quest which tasted great. This place also has a beer garden that not many know. I would go back to this place.
Oktoberfest on Sep 21st. Food is a bit pricey, but the beers are so good, Dayum.
Love the breakfast and coffee there.
Excellent beer, food and cake. We love the village atmosphere.
Excellent place. Delicious food, awesome beers and a lovely atmosphere.
A small place that's easy to miss. Great food! Breakfast, brunch etc options. Great coffee. Food all around had that German flare.
Great bread and the closest I've seen to authentic German pretzels.
Great bread and pastries. They have a few wheat-free options. Nice quaint and cozy atmosphere.
Probably the closest thing to a real German pretzel you will find in the area. The pastries are quite good also. The service the day I went was terrible: I ordered the soup of the day, thinking t would be a quick meal. Took close to 15 minutes, and the place wasn't even very busy at the time. And the soup was not even worth waiting for! I have no idea how it is even possible to screw up Lentil Soup! It was bland and flavorless. The slice of bread that came with it was very nice, though.
Don't get me wrong, this place used to be a diamond-in-the-rough in this rapidly-changing neck of the woods, but Esther's should clean up their act--what was once a charming little cafe is now grungy, rundown, unkept. What a shame.
The food is great and I really enjoyed the outside patio on the sunny California days.
Esther's German Bakery is always worth a visit. Either you love the authentic German food you can eat there or you simply buy some real German pretzels or some other German bakery goods. A definitive must go for German food lovers.
Oh god how much I missed a good apple crumble, just as good as the one you would find in Europe. Their schnitzel is also solid, only thing they sadly lack on is their coffee, ordered a cappuccino and it was nothing like a cappuccino should taste or look (just all the frothed milk on top, actually coming out of the cup), you are better off with coffee at Peet’s. Bread is amazing, high quality ingredients without all the nasty sugars/preservatives/additives/etc that you find in the supermarket bread (even the one at Wholefoods, Raleys and Trader Joe’s has lots of bad stuff). All in all, this is my new favorite place around the area.
Coffee is special, different from Starbucks flavor. Dessert is very good, and a huge plus is it is not expensive (<4$ a piece)
I am not German and I didnt try the food but the desert was wonderful. Tasted fresh and great combo with my coffee. I also enjoyed the atmosphere ... It had a very cozy and homelike feeling to it.
Food review is from a vegetarian's perspective. Their sandwich was very good. Options are limited. Good bakery items as well. Service can be slow and seating tight. And could be slightly uncomfortable if you sit in the patio.
Very tasty for breakfast as well as dinner. Love the hazlenut cake and omelettes. Good beers too.
My wife and spent this past December eating our way through Germany and Austria. So when I found Esther's German Bakery I was excited. The place is small but pretty cute. Parking can be a challenge but I managed to find a spot around the back. Bit the food...I just have to start out saying that I wasn't impressed. The pretzels weren't authentically German. They lack the texture and bite of an authentic German pretzel. It almost tasted stale. The German breakfast plate I ordered was good, but not great. Why did it have red radishes and not sauerkraut? Maybe some potatoes! The wurst was fine, but would have been amazing if it was an option to have it grilled. My plate just felt boring. My wife's dish cost a dollar more but at least looked full and colorful. The downside was that it felt very American. Lastly, the price. It cost my just shy of $30.00. That was just for two plates and 1 extra pretzel to go, no drinks. I sadly could never recommend this place as a true authentic German experience, and I definitely won't be going back.
Great for breakfast..German style
German omelet was awesome
My wife and I go here quite often, good food with decent price. The only downside is the parking is kind difficult to find. Bratwurst is my go-to dish.
The food is increadible, the staff is friendly, the beer is great and by far the best part is Wednesday night trivia. All around an amazing place. ❤
Great pastries! Cheesecake!!
Great looking interior, with a comfy feel. Had the German Omlette. Meal is large enough for two people, comes with orange slices and toast. Very good!
My boyfriend and I decided to try their bread out after hearing so many great things about it, but the experience and service killed it all. The man at the stand in the farmers market located in Montclair was the most disrespectful. Let’s just say we asked how much the bread cost and he was looking the opposite direction. I’ll stop there. Don’t support this stand. The service is AWFUL.
I was a little bummed when they announced new management, but they've actually done well with the place. It's kept it's authentic German fare and flair, which keeps me coming back. Never change Esther's!
Great little bakery cafe with delicious traditional German entrees, breads, and desserts. I almost always go for the pork schnitzel (swapping the fried potatoes for the potato salad) and rinse it down with a glass of their crisp weissen beer. There's a quaint little patio out back. After Esther sold the place in 2016, the service speed took a dive briefly, but has improved since then.
The tap beer is really good. I tried a few. The food is delicious and tasty. I really liked the little patio/ garden in the back
Today my brother and I walked up to the stand at a Farmers market for the bakery. The guy was packing his stuff up and he put away the breaksticks. We were about to ask him something but he yells “WHAT DO YOU WANT!” while waving his arms around sarcastically. We asked him if he had breaksticks which he had just put away but he said no. This guy was so rude and disrespectful that no one should support their business. And this was not the first time either he was rude to me but now I’m not giving him my money for overpriced breaksticks.
Need a pretzel and can't get to Germany? Here's your best option! Also breakfast and lunch are good.
Great overlooked gem, German brews on tap, Biergarten, food, bakery...go.
I really wish they had authentic German bread rolls "Brötchen". (They do not). They do have a pretty authentic Knusperstange (crispy stick).
I've had about half the menu at this point, and don't regret trying anything. The entrees are well made, the sides are passable, and they have quite a lot of variety in the drinks they serve. It's a pretty cozy place, and can feel a little crowded at times, but they kindly set aside the back corner for families and children, so the noise isn't so bad.
Friendly advice, staff are all brewers. Great selection of grains, hops and yeast. Lots of good hardware and equipment.
Great German food and baked goods
Great warm German style environment. Food are tasty, pork shank cooked perfect, combine with Hefeweizen on top at a early summer night, feels like in German. Come back here for long delayed dinner. The pork shank is truly amazing, tasted as good as the ones I tried in Germany. With beer on tap, brought me back all German experience.
Great find just of El Camino Real. Bakery come cafe come luncheon. You can have wurst with ketchup or a slice of pie. Coffee or beer. Great for a brunch.
Great little bakery and coffee house. The apple crumb cake was delicious.
Good pretzels
I really like this place. I normally have the veggie omlete which is great. Kids love the French toast. Cheese platter is ok but could use a but more variety. All breads are outstanding. Coffee is pretty good too.
Cozy place, loaded omelettes are good, disappointed with the apple pancakes. Used to be great but recently 2 purchases were not fully cooked. After the first bad experience I did tell them about the uncooked pancakes. Next time happened again. Not going back.
This place is very authentic and cozy. Love it!
Great schnitzel. Friendly service. There's often a line on the weekends, especially for breakfast, so we will usually take it to go.
