REVIEWS OF Big Sur Bakery IN California

antonio ortiz

What a pleasant surprise on our trip to SF! The salad was amazing and so fresh. I ordered avocado toast and I have never seen so much ripe avocado on one plate before. Really spectacular. Great black bean soup also. I can't recommend this place enough. Best espresso I have had outside of Rome.

Jim Donnelly

Stopped for a coffee on way through nice lady sorted out with off menu sourdough for lunch I picked up.

Bernie Orglmeister

Awesome food.

Sharon Harris

Fantastic baked goods! I went for a cream-filled donut and a chive and cheddar scone, both of which were absolutely incredible. The servers are very friendly, and there is plenty of seating along with a bathroom nearby.

Christopher Rutt

Mmmm....craft beer goodness!

Andrea Todd

First time in this bakery/restaurant. Went for a pastry and had a custard filled sugar donut. Very yummy. Nice staff. Pricey=Big Sur

Matthew Gallant

Wonderful roadside bistro, great food and great views. A large, maintained garden with many different local plants arranged nicely. Pricey, but worth it.

Robert Naylor

Very good but expensive. Not lots of choices but bangin food with nice service. Ate there twice traveling through. Would go again.

Jocelyn

Get there early and try the tea au lait - I get two, one for there and one for the ride home!

Yoram Or

Great pastries!

Bernadine Recrio

Would pass by earlier in the day if able! (Mainly because they run out of their goodies early, which happened to us!)

Katie Lites

Adorable setting. Gorgeous gardens. We stopped for a quick bite. The drinks were great. The Wild Blueberry Strudel was the best ever. It was almost $7 and after eating mine I went back to buy two more... that's how amazing it was. If I'm ever in Big Sur again I'll be coming back.

Jacqueline Arnaez

Salmon toast was beyond delicious!

Elisa Sibinski

SO GOOD! Always on the lookout for fresh veggies and delicious quality food. We found it at Big Sur Bakery! Do NOT pass this place up.

Jean Clark

Can I have a menu to take out to my nephew so he can order? No he has to come inside, but he’s in a wheelchair and there are steps,,, we can’t take it outside because it changes everyday,, it’s on a chalkboard that can go out and back in,,,no everyone has to come inside to order,,,,small observation simply turning the board around to face the window would help my nephew read the menu since THIS PLACE has no ramp to get inside and the staff is not willing to assist the handicapped so we left, and hence the 1 star because I can’t rate it lower!!

Jennifer A

I think stars are for the ambience and for the uniqueness of the place. But food and coffee are too expensive. Probably its the only cafe` around Big Sur/Hwy1, its a good leverage for them?

Alina Riškutė

Nice coffee and great atmosphere! Baked goods looked delish, but nothing gluten free. Only gluten-free lunch option was soup and salad with viniagrete. 12 dollars for just salad :/

Erin Hannon

Definitely worth a stop. A bit on the pricey side, but so is everything in Big Sur. I had the veggie frittata and a coffee (a regular old coffee, but they have all the fancy ish too). Nice outside seating, dog friendly (specifically no barking/biting, ha). Unhurried, friendly vibes. Place has lots of character. Pastries looked and smelled insane but I somehow resisted so can’t speak to those.

Tom Eastep

We had a. excellent lunch at this bakery

Emily Reimschussel

Food was good but not amazing. Was disappointed in the carne verde pizza. The strawberry sorbet was delicious.

Janelle Wolfe

Love the delicious food and wonderful atmosphere and groovy events.

arpita sarkar

Awesome food with friendly staffs..

alicia bourke

Very cute stop off if you are doing a road trip. Toilets and petrol available here also!

VIKRAM SAXENA

Beautiful location with plenty of outdoor seating. Both salad and sandwiches are pretty good.

Ferdinand Guarin

Freshly baked breads, good coffee, relaxing view and nice people. Wonderful experience. I had breakfast 3 in a row. That's how I like the place so much!

Mary Ann Mangano

Located in the most gorgeous location Big Sur Bakery proved to be a special place not to be missed! I was greeted warmly by staff and offered gorgeous pistachio cardamom cake, scones and coffee. I was then given a tour and history of the property by a very charming member of staff. This was one of the treasures of my trip. Thank you! Merci!

Tina Cordova

I read other reviews about this bakery and was super excited to try it. I got there late afternoon and was sort of disappointed in the small selection. They may have more to choose from early in the day. I settled on a custard donut, a mocha cookie, and a chocolate chip.macadamia nut cookie. Let me tell you. Everything was AMAZING. The donut had a delicious zip of lemon zest, and the cookies were super soft and flavorful. I'd happily recommend to anyone driving up or down big Sur!

jack

Delicious salads, pizzas, coffee, treats. Very very highly recommended. There is a real talented chef in this kitchen.

Jonathan Harris

Driving through and stopped for dinner, not expecting to find one of the best meals I've ever had! Really impressed! The view from the outdoor tables is amazing.

mike sommerville

Nice place.good pizza.

Carl Coates

The burger is ok, but the price ($20) is about 3 times what it was worth. Bun was greasy, tomato was way over ripened. Ice cream for $12.50 is about twice what it's worth. Chips are really good though.

Matt Fowler

Amazing cup of coffee to keep me going down route one...

Taylor Johnson

My husband and stopped on our way through. We are so glad we did! The coffee and baked goods are delicious! The staff was so nice and owner does such a great job! If you have the opportunity, definitely stop by!

eve watson

Disappointing after hearing so much about the place and seeing the cook book. It seems to have grown tired and become too business like without soul. Long wait, service slow but person serving very friendly and chatty. Restroom inadequate and not clean.

Tristan Hale

A nice place to stop for lunch along Highway 1. The food is good with nice presentation. There is WiFi and cell service here.

Joshua

Absolutely love Big Sur Bakery and always stop here while going through. Insanely expensive and overcrowded with tourists though, as to be expected.

Ryan Catino

OMG the burger I had here was amazing!!!! This is a new must every time I'm in the area

Roseline Davidson

One of the highlights of our trip to Big Sur. Friendly people, beautiful setting <3

Amanda DeNardo

Everything here was fantastic! We tried a variety of pastries, and each one was excellent. The burger and salad were also very good. If you're in the Big Sur area, this is a must-visit spot for treats and/or a meal!

Sebastian Kaczorowski

This place is pricey! Coffee costs quite a bit. Food is good but not extraordinary, still you have to pay top dollar for simple burger with chips (super salty chips, not fries). Barista is not chatty at all. Very tired guy. They expect tips before the service, which I don't like.

John Lopez

Really terrific service, coffee and pastries. A small but stellar selection of other items for sale including earthenware, honey, chocolate, etc. Haven't had the pleasure of staying for dinner but the menu always looks incredible. These folks could easily rest on their laurels and rake in that tourism cash, so it's really nice to have a gem like this available so close to camping. If you're doing the coastal drive for fun, definitely plan a stop here.

Greg Mckrill

Always good to enjoy this beautiful place.

Dave Moore

This place was very busy when we stopped. I was worried it my take a long time to get our food and drinks. I was wrong. The service people there were awesome, friendly, and quick to get our order in and our food out to us. Mind you there was a line out the door. Oh, and kudos to the kitchen

Neil Rosos

Fantastic pastries. The bacon bow tie is a must for savory pastry lovers.

Norbert Shtaynberg

WOW. Great place to stop for lunch along the road. The selection was limited but the food was wonderful. The staff is friendly. Great outdoor seating. Highly recommend.

Laura Miller

Best food in Big Sur and the surrounding area. Terry and all the servers are wonderful.

Dennis Golomazov

It’s really expensive. Some croissants are $8. The good thing about the place is that it opens at 9. Most other places open at 10. Maybe we did it wrong, but we haven’t seen any breakfast food other than pastries and a couple non-sweet croissants: one with ham & cheese and another with roasted vegetables. The outdoor seating is very nice. Overall, I have a mixed feelings. I expected more variety and not that pricey.

Jean-Baptiste Domage

Perfect place for a break

ocean ken schlussel

Coffee is great. Pastries can be exceptional. A bit pricey, but hey, it's big Sur

Andrew Rosenkranz

Starbucks is better. Nuff said.

Sunny C

A rustic but sophisticated long-time local hang-out with delicious offerings for a sit-down meal, light snack (think ginger or leek scones, croissants, frittatas, or just a cookie with their wonderful local Acme coffee). They will also happily package up a lunch with wine for a back-woods hike or beach-side picnic. Please be considerate of this beautiful, pristine area and your gracious local hosts and TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU for appropriate disposal.

Antonela Frashëri

Great place. Dog friendly and great avocado toast! It was a bit overpriced which is understandable for the area. The owner was so nice! They were about to close so they gave us free pastries!

Josh Resnik

Good menu with small indoor and beautiful outdoor area seating. Food was very good and coffee smelled great! Lots of blue Jays all around to watch while waiting for your food.

Mike Thompson

Amazing sandwich! A much needed place to also get gas right next door.

Zohaib Abbasi

Good views but expensive, scone was dry and bland, tea was meh too

Ananya Kumar

Extremely overpriced, and the service wasn't that good (the cashier strongly implied we should pay a tip by saying "we bring the food all the way to your table" when we were making the payment and filling out the tip box on a screen, so we gave a standard restaurant tip, but it was pretty much self service (we had to pick up all the cutlery, napkins, water, clear the table). Food was decent, but full of butter and nothing special.

Shaun Belcher

We stopped by chance at this restaurant. The staff looked after us very well and found that we called desert pudding funny. The table we had was outside with a fantastic view of the mountains. The food was delicious, however the prices were a little steep to say the least. All in all this was a special moment for our family holiday.

B N

The best grilled cheese you’ll ever have in your life. Seriously. Don’t believe me?....have one. Oh and the service is awesome and coffee is great.

zephyer 1999

Unique looking, big cactus and little trails winding throughout. No ocean view. But, can't recommend really. No one greets you. You have to inside to order from a very small menu. We were there about one so most of the bake goods were gone. First employee we saw was wearing shorts made from pants and all torn, untied combat boots, torn shirt, unkempt beard. Homeless in my local park look better. Hamburger I had was very good. Juicy and made from beef and lamb. Came with chips. Wife had a forgettable chicken salad. Two glasses of tea, total $45.26

Anand Srinath

This place is gorgeous! It's quaint, cute and just the spot after a hike to get some coffee. We did not stop for a meal but next time we're around, we will. It's easy to miss from the road but also a great find if you happen to see it.

Rachel Hefferan

We were only going to go one morning on our vacation... but came back the next day. Great food in a great space!! Will return if I am ever back in the area!

Alejandro Prado Arboleda

Came here for dessert. They actually have a pretty nice restaurant and we didn’t know. The house made cookies and cream ice cream was an absolute indulgence. The garden is also beautiful. Very nice place to go when in Big Sur, the staff was very friendly.

Michael Engelke

Great spot for breakfast, lunch and especially dinner in the middle of Big Sur, around the corner from Pfeiffer Beach!

Lynda Oswald

A warm and cozy Big Sur experience. The pastries are delicious. The coffee and tea offerings are wonderful. Friendly and helpful service. Prices are easygoing

Shiree Goins

Food and tea/coffee are incredible! It is a long wait though. But worth it.

Hannah J

Excellent, perfect cappuccino. And excellent salads. And excellent people.

Y.K. Ying

Nice place to stop

IceWallow Come

The food wasn't the best in the world, but it's good for a bite after a long travel.

Daniel Mills-Thysen

Expensive but great food and cute gardens. The sticky buns are great.

Esther Perez Cuevas

Amazing bake goods in a beautiful setting. One of the highlights of our trip to Big Sur. Prices are steep, but quality is great.

Gus Walbolt

Delicious food that seems to taste even better in this rustic setting in beautiful Big Sur. I make a point to stop here on every trip. Great coffee and they usually have an interesting assortment of locally made coffee mugs from area artisans.

Lindsey Smith

The food is fresh and decent but way overpriced. But that's what you should expect when you're away from the city and there are limited options, I suppose. Okay, the chocolate mocha cookie was absolutely fantastic...

John Duke

Not the cheapest place to stop for a pastry ($8.50 for a cinnamon roll), but very well made. I was disappointed they didn't offer a full breakfast. Worth a stop if you like indulgences.

Sarah Judson

Great atmosphere with a lovely view of the mountains. The pastries are spectacular and the coffee is hot

Kevin Leppla

Ordered "Ham"burger. Found out after the fact it was 20 percent lamb. This was NOT noted on the menu board. Terrible not to let customers know.

Morten Marwell-Hauge

Enormues expensive. No glutenfree. Nice restroom. But, how easy is it to get deliveries out there? Scones where the best I ever tasted.

Maira Baraldi

Nice place, but few food options!

Nikolas Kardasis

Great bakery, amazing pizza. Be prepared for long waits as service is not the fastest.

Amit Gupta

Had a coffee and a piece of cake. Coffee was subpar (watery) and cake just okay. Not what I remember the quality to be.

Connor King

Great spot with really good pastries and coffee. A good spot to fuel up before or refuel after a day in Big Sur!

Laura Rasmussen

Absolutely delicious pastries and coffee. Kind service. Pretty flower garden area. Great stop for our family.

Frank Lazzaro

Excellent

Ben Stephenson

Very good place, had a early evening meal here, service was great, food was amazing.

Sean Clinnin

Nice little break at the beginning of Big Sur Highway 1 going south... good coffee good selection of pastries and breakfasts hamburgers and gas get it while you can!

Ted W

Great Place! Worth every penny!

Andrew Chou

Enjoy the energy of the restaurant, super welcoming to their guests and superb pizza. A place must go if you visited Big Sur.

Billy Willy

Wow!!! Such an awsome vibe from everyone there. The location and building is really cool too. Above what you'd expect from a big sur spot. The food is amazing cooked by a amazing chef.

Cheryl Ward-Kaiser

Great drinks and nice patio to enjoy an afternoon drink. Great sandwiches.

horacio prado urtado

This is a really beautiful place and good food

Ritoban Basu Thakur

Food and drinks are absolutely excellent!

Jonathan Ross

Hands down, best burgers and sandwiches I've had! Not to mention, amazing location, in beautiful Big Sur California!

Ashley Kemper

You've been driving down Route 1 through miles of cliff-side switchbacks. You're gearing up for an afternoon of hiking through the redwoods. You need a box of sweet, savory, satisfying pastries to complete your Big Sur day! This tiny bakery sits just off of Route 1, making it an easy stop no matter where your day is taking you. Everything was delicious, but the cinnamon sugar doughnut, cheddar chive scone, and chocolate poppyseed danish were standouts.

whitechocolatematcha

Nice place, pretty exy though. A cup of small Cappuccino is nearly 6 bucks and a Mocha for 6.75. They have good selections of pastry tho!

mrfroodler

Walked in for a second. Read on a chalkboard that a burger was $19. Walked out the next second. It’s just real expensive for us simple folk.

mike palmer

Seemed very over priced

Alexander Cecil

This is great coffee but the food prices and long wait times make it hard to give it a stronger recommendation.

Tushar Sanghrajka

Good place

Robert Paul

Yum yum yum yum yum yum yummy.

locade17

Did not eat food. Stopped to get gas. Gas was over 5 dollars. Omg. And girls bathroom was closed.

David Oliver

Outstanding products, nice folks, pretty environment. I would give it 5 stars but they run out of the products like bread & ham/cheese croissant that people come for. Disappointing in that regard. Otherwise it's a homerun.

Vivere Memento

Amazing French pastries, but it comes at a steep price! You're paying for the taste, the location and the reputation.

jon perez

$19 burger with thin sliced chips is pretty steep but, real good. Mocha for here in a glass was perfect. Two burgers and a Mocha for $49

Robert beach Beach

It was so great. friendly people, convenient for snacks for the kids

Angela Sas

A unique and kind group of people bring you delicious and original treats. Lots of seating indoors and out in the gardens. Gorgeous plants all around ❤️

Jose Hidalgo

Tasty, but a bit expensive

Anthony Elkins

Loved the coffee and the snacks.

April H

We absolutely loved this place. We came for dinner and it was packed but we only waited 10 minutes and got a cozy table in the back. We shared the smoked salmon and fettuccine which are both must gets. We also got the flourless chocolate tart and it was incredible. Everything was so good we came back the next morning and got two donuts and a chocolate croissant. Each pastry was so fresh and delicious. We will definitely be back next time we are in Big Sur!

Sally Melville

Nice breakfast

Kelly Norton

Banana chocolate strudel was amazing!

Esther Shim

Tried the cardamom bread and it was soooooo good! My sister ordered a mocha cookie which was far too rich and tasted more like a brownie with chocolate chips. We both ended up finishing my cardamom bread which was about $8 and the cappuccino also was about $8. Expensive, but delicious. If you head out the front door to the outdoor seating area, there are a few tables in the succulent garden area.

Marco Thiele

Nice place but perfect definition of highway robbery: small latte: 6:25... almond croissant: 8:50. Nothing justifies paying these prices. It's not like they need to lug ingredients into the area by foot. Avoid just to make a point and to acknowledge that locals should be allowed to get a decent latte at a reasonable price.

Sally Soberanes

Staff and owner are fantastic, they definitely make the stop worthwhile. Food is absolutely addictive. The two combined will leave you with a desire to quickly return.

Gabby J

Great atmosphere and scenery. Impressed by all beautiful flowers and landscape. I enjoyed a coffee with almond milk. It is a very traditional bakery with not many options for gluten free or dairy free. It would be great if they could offer more plant based options with croissants, muffins and much more!

alice chung

Excellent customer service and equally amazing baked goods. Their almond croissant and bacon danish is incredible. Order these items before they run out. For something a bit more savory, the ham and cheese croissant is a great option, too. This is a popular place so the earlier you go, the better. No Wifi and there's a small parking lot.

Les Rickford

Chill and scenic

Haylee Jane Monteiro

I absolutely love baked goods, and I wanted pretty much every item on the menu. They had the classics like giant croissants and some very enticing cookies including a mochna one! The more important part though was some of the fancy stuff they had. There was a candied bacon bowtie, cheddar chive scones, a couple other scones, a pistachio something chocolate dense bread/cake type item. Of course there were the loaves of bread which they're apparently famous for. I just got back to my strict diet so unfortunately I didn't get anything. My two friends ordered the cheddar & chive (which is definitely what I would have gone for) and the candied bacon bowtie. They both loved both of them. The scone was really soft on the inside, and to be honest I was really close to buying one! The items were all massive and quite pricey too though.

Vanessa Villanova

This place is a dining staple in Bug Sur. While the entrees are on the pricier side, the quality of ingredients is unparalleled. They always have exceptional specials, so feel confident deviating from the regular menu. The service is with care and interest. The bread -- sweet Jesus -- the bread. Do not miss it.

Danielle Carlson

Chef is amazing, coffee is fantastic, cute spot - Please dispose of your trash properly in Big Sur! Keep Big Sur Beautiful!

Mark Feferman

Food was very good. Location and grounds are gorgeous.

Shirley Dugdale

Friendly, good wine and beer choice, tasty broccoli soup

Anthony Augustine

The food was pretty good at this "hole in the highway" establishment. During our evening visit, the lighting was very dim which could be either annoying or add to the ambiance (what I would like to think they're going for). Worth a stop, especially if you're looking for some food along your trip.

Ash Der

Almond croissant was the flakiest, tastiest I've had outside of Europe.

Mark Perschel

The setting is AWESOME!! What can you say about BIG SUR???? The bakery was pricey but you would expect that... We ordered the Burger and split it three ways... It was delicious... Bathrooms clean and in a beautiful garden area... Very Cool...

Jennifer Jones

I stopped here for breakfast and had the most wonderful time. No matter where you sit you get a beautiful view. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I would definitely recommend trying the bacon maple twist.

Tim Jordan

Pricey but top notch avo-toast in a nice terrace

Suff Syed

Three stars because their website doesn't give you the whole picture. Lunch service ends at 3:30. Dinner begins at 5:30. Between 3:30 and 5:30 you're left with an overpriced bakery menu.

AL Peng

Food was very expensive and barely acceptable. Frittata was too salty & burned. The cream donut had about a tablespoon of cream. Disappointing food quality. Almost non-existent service. The bakery has a great location & very cool vibe. We enjoyed sitting in the little courtyard. I would only come here for coffee but would have a full breakfast elsewhere beforehand.

Noha El Hosseiny

The bakery is simple and unpretentious. I had a macchiato and a plain croissant and both were superb and the service was very smooth. It is one of those "order then help yourself" places which is very relaxing and convenient for me. It had only two breakfast options, and other pastries by the piece. Apple trees and blackberry bushes are planted adjacent to the bakery so don't miss taking a look. The seating area and patio are big enough, and parking was convenient at 9:30 am.

Ron Mansfield

Yum. Fun spot. Good eats. Park on the highway if necessary. The lot gets pretty full. Awsome burgers. 'Sayin.

Vikki Kelly

Top notch burger!

Beth Burke

Charming bakery in Big Sur with fantastic pastries. We tried almost one of everything and the cream filled doughnut was our favorite, the best we've ever had. The strudels and cinnamon roll were also outstanding. The prices are a little high, but it's Big Sur.

Isabel Steiner

Best food on our California toad trip. We will remember this one for some while. Had a perfectly cooked filet and a fig salad. It was simply delicious and in a very cozy athmosphere. We will definitely come back.

Becky Gallion

Such a cute little place to relax in Big Sur! So many homemade items & all the food and pastries are amazing! Katelyn is the friendliest staff member and super knowledgeable! Love to stop in here for a quick sweet snack!

William Prowse

Stopped here for hot tea. Had a cup of green tea and a chocolate chip, macadamia nut cookie. Awesome cookie and very friendly staff.

Corey

Ok. Overpriced.

Colin MacMichael

Beautiful spot for a bakery with lot's of "zucculants" for decoration in the front garden. I would recommend a stop in.

Djurica Bukur

Extremely limited menu and absurdly high prices. The outside seating area is right in front of a gas station (not very scenic). Service was slow and waitstaff seemed self absorbed and not particularly accommodating. There are certainly better options in the area.

Joanne Agresta

Bakery smells so good. Their desserts are delicious

Andres Martinez

Beautiful beef burgers. Really nice premises. They need to have a changing room for babies though.

Pat Malpass

Very expensive buts it's nice and it's The Big Sur!

Daniel Palevich

Best espresso

Kat E E

Yummy pastries, semi difficult parking. Prices are quite high. They also serve a small collection of entrees but those were also priced quite high. The people were friendly here. Almost no interior seating but pleasant outdoor seating in a garden like atmosphere. There is also a small gift shop and gas station. The prices at the gas station were outrageous. About $5.50 a gallon. If you can fill up elsewhere It would be advised.

Sandy Secreto Milone

Beautiful and quaint. Top notch dishes highly recommend stopping and experience it for yourself. Service is amazing as well.

Matteo Traversini

Good coffee

Patrick Hubbard

Delicious coffee and pastries! Great outdoor seating experience!

Pete Bunch

I wanted to love this. We had a wonderful little dinner here on our honeymoon a few years ago. When we visited this year, the atmosphere was lovely, and the service was good, but the food was just a bit disappointing. My fish didn't have much flavour. Did not love up to expectations or price.

Tommy Vest

Perfect spot for a low key wedding!

Cynthia Orth

Great food! Very casual rustic place. Prices high due to remote location.

Barry Baggott

The restaurant makes really good burgers, but they're $20.

Scott McQueen

Good food, pleasant staff, and magical surroundings.

Matt Taylor

A must stop on any Big Sur excursion! Awesome food. Awesome service. Awesome staff. Get there early to get the good breakfast pastries.

james tavenner

Bit pricey, but excellent food and service. Great place for a rainy day in Big Sur. We ate there while we waited for the weather to clear, and it was a very pleasant stop. Coffee and cinnamon roll were top notch.

David Henderson

Very good coffee and pastries. Also, one of the few places in Big Sur with call phone signal

mike toppe

Well worth the extra travel and because its remote everythibg is $2-$3 more than you're used to. Excellent creative food made with passion.

Jeongeun Park

Incredible scones and torte!

James Carpenter

Big Sir Bakery is fabulous dinner option for the greater Big Sir area. Great food, star rating due to lack of a view.

Luisa Toste

The ham and cheese croissant was fresh and so crunchy. The place is nice and warm with unique art and outdoor seating.

Nichi Bausser

My son and I were hiking Sept 2017. We stopped to have lunch at this place, but were a little late. They had a few donuts (which they bake fresh everyday) and she gave one to each of us. Wow! Absolutely the most delicious donut I've ever had (I am not much on donuts). The flavor was exquisite and lasted forever. Would come back in a heartbeat for lunch and donut's
