The bottom line - Bill Powers is THE BEST criminal attorney in this area. He is THE MAN. Your future is too important to use anyone else. Normally, I don't put much stock in Internet reviews. Particularly as a surgeon - I have seen too many medical professionals with reviews that simply don't correspond to what I know about them. Anyone who has had a bad meal in a restaurant with great Yelp reviews knows what I mean. When I need a recommendation, I go to people in the know. So when I was arrested for DWI for sitting in a parked car with the radio on in a town in Mecklenburg County, I asked my divorce attorney who to use. I asked the lawyer who represented me before the Medical Board who to use. And most importantly, I asked the premier DWI attorney in Forsyth County (who I had used previously for speeding tickets) who to use. Without hesitation, they all gave me the same name - Bill Powers. I will never forget what one of them told me - "Bill is the guy the judges use." Mr. Powers and the rest of his staff lived up to their billing every step of the way. They were thorough, meticulous, and relentless. Emily Bretz, the associate in charge of revocations, swung into action immediately and got me my license back in 5 days. At every turn over a grinding 20 month process, Mr. Powers proved himself to be a master of the law, the personalities, and the tactics, until we finally won the case. Mr. Powers didn't quit until he got me my life back. Mr. Powers also communicates with you. His office is well run and responsive. He reliably answers email in a timely fashion. And remember- there is ALWAYS a reason for what he is doing, and it is ALWAYS in your interest. By the end of the process, I would just sit in court calmly repeating my mantra to myself: "In Bill I trust." Everything I worked for in my entire life - my career, my ability to serve my patients, the good I do in my community - was jeopardized by a ridiculously technical aspect of an incredibly bad, highly politicized law. I used to think that as an American citizen I had 5th Amendment rights under the law, and that the courts are reasoned and thoughtful. I was wrong. I thank God that Bill Powers was there to protect me. Any idiot can reduce a speeding ticket and get a 5 star review. When you have a real problem, get Bill Powers. The judges do.

UPDATED REVIEW: I originally left Chris a very poor review for multiple reasons. Mainly, the lack of communication after my judgement was delivered. I had to call repeatedly for multiple weeks to get documentation that I was promised. I got a call from him, directly, the day after I reviewed his firm. He asked what he could do to make it right with me. The only thing I wanted was the documentation that he promised me during his representation of me. Chris delivered later that day. Not only did he deliver on what he said he would do, he also went above and beyond and offered me an additional service for later, should I need it. For those reasons, I am changing my review from one star to four. Chris McCartan laid my options out clearly and let me know what I was up against during his representation of me. These guys are the Rolls Royce of DWI defense in the Charlotte area. Emily Bretz got me off for my DMV hearing (for refusal to take a breathalyzer)...which allowed me to keep my full license during this whole process. Then John Landreth got me a Not Guilty verdict at my criminal trial. Yes, they are priced higher than many others but it was worth every penny for me. John Landreth in particular is not only competent, but he looked like he enjoyed every second of skewering the cop and the prosecutor at my criminal trial. This is a brand name law firm as far I'm concerned, and it was certainly possible to get the same result for less--but with these guys you have an established history of success. Its really hard to predict how your lawyer will perform, but with these guys that extra couple of dollars up front buys you some peace of mind. When your back is against the wall these guys will be there for you and they fight tooth and nail in the courtroom. You can really tell that there is a culture in this law firm that holds the rights of everyday citizens as something sacred. In today's world the odds are stacked in favor of the cop and prosecutor and their word is almost taken as scientific fact--but this law firm knows the law, period. They deliver even when they are the underdog, because they are passionate about helping you...and honestly, these guys seemed just as pissed as I was about my arrest! They may not guarantee a Not Guilty verdict, but they can guarantee that they'll give em hell in that courtroom. PS One last thing...I would probably pay a significant amount of money to see that cop's face again, as he walked out of that courtroom feeling completely defeated. The not guilty verdict may cost you money, but the look on the cop's face when your lawyer completely owns him...PRICELESS.

I cannot say enough good things about Bill Powers. I know him as a friend, a neighbor and a lawyer. We first used Bill’s legal services when our daughter as a new driver had several “moments of misunderstanding of the law” which resulted in speeding tickets. (For example, it’s OK to speed if you need to pass a big truck or if your team has just won its first conference championship and you are headed to celebrate with teammates etc.) Bill was wonderful! He did not so much as help her get out of the tickets, but more provided a chance for her to understand the laws and to learn from her mistakes without affecting our (her parents) good standing or pocketbook. The consequences proved very effective. It took a lot of lifeguarding hours (this provided some time to contemplate on what she might have done differently) to pay the fines but the fines were for violations that would not doom her driving record. We thought that her experiences had perhaps helped our son, who now at 18 still had a squeaky clean record. Though it probably helped out some, we realized that he was not without error when we received a very surprising notice recently in the mail that “his court date had been set”. After speaking with him, he informed us that as an 18 year old legal adult he had obtained his own lawyer (several months before this) and they had worked everything out and he was to be taking his classes that weekend to help erase the incident from his record. I will have to admit that I was very impressed, enough so that I didn’t even question his not telling us. Of course, he had called our friend Bill Powers who had been an amazing mentor to him during this time. We are extremely grateful to Bill for providing this confidential outlet for our son to obtain ethical and responsible legal advice. There are lawyers that will help you avoid obeying the law or will even help you benefit from an unfortunate situation. I can say that Bill Powers is NOT one of these guys. He is a man full of integrity and compassion and a thorough understanding of and respect for the law. He has helped our young adults understand the law and its implications and has provided honest and straight forward answers and helped to turn the mistakes that they have made into learning experiences with consequences that will not hinder their chances for success in the future. Let’s face it, the laws today are very strict and the consequences of breaking them can be overwhelming. And sometimes, our many (many!) words of warning as parents just fall on deaf ears. If you have a son or daughter who has recently turned 18 and/or is headed off to college WRITE THIS MAN’S NAME AND PHONE NUMBER DOWN AND GIVE IT TO THEM! Better yet, call Bill yourself and schedule an appointment for your new drivers and new adults to sit down with him and have a nice chat about the law, their new responsibilities and the impact that bad decisions could possibly have on their future and yours.

I have used this firm a few times. Every time they have been great! The ladies in the office were always nice and helpful. A few years ago I got a speeding ticket and they got it dismissed. I also used them when my daughter received her first speeding ticket. It also was dismissed. I have referred this firm to a friend of mine who got a DWI, he was very pleased with his outcome! I disagree with the others on the reviews regarding them over charging. To save my driving record and my daughters I think they were worth every penny. I would use them again!
