This museum is the legacy of Isabella Stewart Gardner a very wealthy Bohemian who loved collecting rare books, manuscripts and works of art from all over the world including Venice, Egypt and the Middle East. Isabella’s museum was conceived in 1899 - she lived on the 4th floor of this palatial style building and created a private museum in the first three floors filled with ‘beautiful pictures and objects of art for people to come and enjoy’. I really enjoyed the eclectic nature of this museum. The central courtyard is just beautiful and its worth a visit just to admire it from every possible vantage point on each floor.

Beautiful museum. You feel like you’re in an Italian palace with beautiful architecture, gardens, and art. You can purchase your ticket online in advance the day before you visit to skip the line. The lines are bigger on the first full weekend of each month because they give free tickets to all Bank of America cardholders.
