Cool place to bring your family, they have added a floor to the museum so if you haven't gone in the last year then go check it out! Super kid friendly and lots to learn about the great state of Maine!
Architecture outside was beautiful, inside pretty vanilla and simple. Dedicated and proud volunteers ...all Capitals are worth a visit :)
Great place to take the kids!
Interesting displays highlighting the history of Maine
Visited here in grade school. Took my nieces recently and it is just as I remembered.
Favorite place.
We had time to spare between activities and on a whim decided to swing by the museum. On arriving we saw it was housed between the state archives and library, so our first impression is that it would be small. But inside we found a very interesting museum covering many facets of Maine and its history.
Loved this place growing up
So many beautiful and interesting items to see. Make sure you add that to your trip of Augusta!
The Maine State Museum is an extensive collection, four floors of beautifully done displays on scientific, historic and cultural topics. Admission is just a few dollars. Highly recommended!
Great exhibits! Fun place to take the family
It's just a single room of Bush memorabilia in a Kennebunkport historic house. The Bush family sends and lends family memorabilia to the Kennebunkport historical society as a way of keeping the house exhibit open.
Love the museum.. restrooms are gross
Fun and educational! Great place to spend a few hours and learn some Maine history.
Great place to take kids on a rainy or cold day. It's inexpensive and the animal exhibit and the vehicles are our favorites. There is an atrium outside the entrance where food is allowed.
Good fun and friendly staff, I go once a year.
I learned so much about the the Great State of Maine and it's rich history. The people of Maine have so much to be proud of. The visit to the museum was fun and educational. Some of the exhibits where amazing ie. Portion of the ship, the looms, and others. Its a great way to learn about the state .
Never even knew this museum existed. Went to see the Lombardi Trophy and the kids wanted to go check this building out. Made it a quick trip but will definitely go back soon to check the rest out. Kids under 6 are free, older kids are $2 and adults are $3.
Very interesting to learn about industry in th old days of Maine.
Took my little ones here and they loved it. They keep asking to go back! Highly recommended.
There is a lot about Maine History. It's a very quiet place and everything is clean. The entry is not expensive.
Easy parking and access and extremely interesting
Kids had a great time
Great place to learn about Maines history.
Wore the kids out before we saw it all, so much to see and do. This museum was well laid out with a design for all ages.
Awesome place to see history of Maine
Somewhat hidden gem here. Very low entrance fee ($3 for adults, lower rates for seniors and children), but excellent and varied exhibits access four floors. Can spend several hours here admiring the display craftsmanship and learning about Maine history. Highly recommended.
For the monument to Samantha Smith, 5 stars
Customer support when entering the museum was lacking.
It had been decades since I had visited the museum. I was totally amazed the nicely curated exhibits. The Maine Jewish exhibit was excellent.
Great for my little children. A very inexpensive adventure to be had.
Really good exhibits. Easy place to learn the history of Maine.
Astonishing amount of detailed displays. First class Museum!
Awsome as usual would like to see more "first nation people " exhibits. Maine has such a large and diverse native culture. Would be nice to see more as well as live people demonstrating the old culture and way of life
Great place really a great learning experience recommended it to anyone with a brain
Loved it
Learned alot today
Inexpensive way to have an educational outing with kids.
So very enjoy, a lot to see and learn. Will be back to visit the museum again on my next visit!!
Visited while on vacation and my kids loved it! Especially picking out all the animals and seeing how an old Mill worked!
Great place for the kids.
Well done. Very extensive coverage of local history.
Absolutely fabulous I loved it and my grandkids had a wonderful time they learned do much and had a blast doing it. We will definitely be taking them back again and again .
A must see when in Augusta.
Always a great family adventure
This museum doesn't change much, except for a display on the 4th floor that takes on different themes. Still, I have brought my kids in many times and always find something I didn't notice before. The museum covers the history of all things Maine, like the fishing, boating, logging, and factorial industries, the natives, the animals, minerals, foods, cars, and wars. The 4th floor also has a place catered to living and playing in the early 1900s. $3 for adults and $2 for kids, with a $10 cap for a family.
Went on a school field trip to see Bug Mania. The class loved the trip, there were lots of vendors and examples to see and touch. Was live bugs to touch and feel. 9 someone had a scorpion and spiders ect.)This was a great experience for the students and others. The museum was full of lots of great history! I enjoyed seeing the mineral collection.
I have lots of memories of coming here as a kid and enjoy bringing my own kids a few times a year. The museum has lots of great exhibits about the history and animals of Maine. The third floor houses exhibits that change regularly. From the museum you can also walk over to the State House which is beautiful inside and has a few more dioramas that feature animals from Maine.
Interesting
Good job well done by Maine historians.
$3 well spent. Where else can you entertain your kids for that price? Great exhibits.
Amazing museum with great facility and nicely laid out displays. Great for kids...and adults too.
Awesome..thanks for all the wonderful exhibits
Great place for adults and kids. It was very educational.
Well worth the money, great atmosphere and very affordable.
Great programs
Great adventure
Very interesting history if Maine. Lots of great exhibits for children.
Tells the history of Maine from all points of view. Enjoyed there dedication to the military and our veterans!
Bug mania was awesome! A great educational program. The kids live it!
One of my favorite places to visit in the state. Everyone always has a great time.
Nice trip with the family
Very interesting, gives a good history lesson about Maine and very enlightening, I had no idea that many inventions were made in Maine!
Nice museum with a diverse coverage of history of Maine and locals’ lifestyles. Many small, interactive activities and a few moving displays are scattered throughout to prevent boredom. Price is very reasonable.
It is definitely the best value for the money of any museum I've ever been to. So many great exhibits to browse through. Fun for all age groups and interests. Multiple floors but easy to maneuver and get around. Nice little gift shop attached to it and very friendly staff throughout making it a wonderful overall experience.
A must place to visit!
I loved this museum as a kid and was excited to visit a couple decades later with my own children. It's just as great as I remembered - a pleasure for kids and adults alike! Beautiful exhibits, layout is perfect for exploring, interesting history lessons on the state... and you can't beat the price.
Extremely interesting facts about Maine and its history. They've done a great job on their exhibits. I highly recommend this museum.
Great place for a field trip!
It has a great museum and is surprisingly fun and interesting. I would love to visit again.
Very informative much to see plan to spend time roaming the museum
Just stopped off to stretch our legs during a road trip and we were pleasantly surprised by this museum. It was terrific and did a great job of telling the story of Maine. My young kids enjoyed the museum too.
It's cool place to visit any time The people around are warm and kind
The displays were interesting and very informative. They had so many subjects and artifacts from Maine's history. It would really take several days to truly read and begin to appreciate all that there.
Loved learning about Maine. Need some benches along the way for those who can't walk it all without stopping here or there. Great service.
Amazing! More than you'd guess; it will keep you coming back!
Great museum for everyone and just the right size before young children get bored. You can't beat the price. $3 for adults and under 5 free.
We love coming here. We have gone many times over the years with our 3 kids and no matter what age they are they still love it. It is a quick little trip to get out of the house. You also can't beat the price- Adults $3.00, Children ages 6-18 $2.00, Children under 6 free with a maximum family charge of $10.00. Its a great place to go and wander around for a few hours and learn some pretty interesting facts/history about the great state of Maine.
Really, really good. Lots of exhibits and the curators have clearly put a lot of time and thought into them. Well worth the trip.
Great for family day took grandkids they loved it kept them interested
Well done. Interesting exhibits
Best $3 ever spent. We took several hours wandering around 4 floors of high quality exhibits. Awesome destination. Not great for kids under 10.
It was just as entertaining at 36 as it was at 12!!!! A great way to spend the day with family
Defiantly worth going to. I plan on visiting it again
Great place to visit with your family
Such a great place to visit!
Plan to spend a lot of time here and be sure to take one of the cruises.
Very cool place to stop and visit. Awesome hand crafted things and nice staff. Surrounding town is nice also.
Not great for young kids, depending on their maturity level, but very interesting way to spend a couple of hours for adults.
Wonderful! So interesting and really gives a sense of place, of life in different parts of Maine over time.
What a very nice place I've been to. With awesome display. Even a working water wheel!
Favorite local spot to visit with son!
Bug Maine-ia is always the best time!
Ample parking. Low admittance fee. Four floors of viewing pleasure. Maine woods, wildlife, industry and daily life. Military involvement. Indigenous people.
Great to place to take the family. So much to see and learn about Maine.
Fun and interesting small museum. The small gauge steam engine and shipwreck just inside the door alone are worth the price of admission.
Bring your family and have fun.
Kids love this place.. great prices.. great exhibits. Awesome souvenir store!
The MSL (and archives), museum, and UP room is a community jewel. I recommend visiting often.
Huge museum that will really teach you all about the history of Maine! Plan on at least 1- 2 hours to see it all.
You can easily spend a day here. Lots to read....
The museum is one of Maine's well kept secrets. We used to visit every so often with our homeschooled children. It helped to educated them in a more fun, out of classroom setting.
The Maine State Museum has many one of a kind displays. The organization is grossly mind boggling. Whoever designed the displays lacked any sense of presentation order. Winding walkways, lack of chronology, and tiny fonts on the displays made this a totally frustrating visit. At $2.00 per person, I feel that I was cheated. Sorry Mainers, I think that your museum is beyond repair.
Needs some TLC and house keeping. I visit here at least twice a year for the last 30 years. It is my happy spot.
Very cool place to check out on a rainy day!Great for kids, been there many times :-)
I need to go here more often
Great place to spend an afternoon for little money
Very kid friendly.
Incredible. Want to learn about Maine? Then this museum is a must. They have done an amazing job ... history, culture, wild life ... everything.
Wonderful exhibits, Friendly staff. Nice, nice visit.
I went to a Press conference Dental care for the low income Mainers
This place was fascinating and the exhibits were all so realistic and or well done. So many genuine artifacts to study and admire. There is a Huge scale reproduction logging workshop centerpiece which is 3 stories tall. They must have spent a lot of money here because it shows in the details. This is a place you must visit if you want to learn about the majestic state of Maine or its long history. Easy to follow floor plan layout, handicap friendly and clean public restrooms.
A great place. I love it.
Amazing museum! One day is not enough, come see for yourself, no better place to explore the history of the people of Maine.
Very nice staff, lots of fun, great homeschool field trip!
It was a really nice place to visit.
Beautiful displays! Great variety! We loved it!
This place had a little bit of every thing about the history of Maine. Can spend couple of hours seeing the displays.
My daughter and I had a wonderful time yesterday visiting the Maine State Museum. The exhibits are amazing, and we had it mostly too ourselves for most of the time we were there. I took 148 pictures of the exhibits for her memories. She was very interested in what they have there and I was glad to be able to be there with her. It's a great place for families, school groups, or individuals looking to learn about our Maine history. From lumbering to fishing, to craft trades and agriculture they have it all here. The admission charge was just 5$ for the two of us and well worth it! A stop by the gift shop is recommended as well! Stop by and enjoy the museum as well as the library and archives wings. Right next door to the Capitol Building which you may want to check out as well.
Great place. So much to look at, and learn. Love there interactive activities for kids.
Nice displays. Need some cleaning and updating of older displays. They don't look like they have been touched in 30 years or more. Especially animals
Great place to spend a rainy day and explore Maine's history
Very nice place to visit
Absolutely amazing here
Very sweet and cheap
Beautifu, well organized museum offering a delightful glimpse of Maine's history. Staff is wonderful with adults and children alike. Not to miss!
We have three kids ranging in age from 18 months to 8 years old and we all loved the museum. The last time I had been was in middle school and I loved it now as much as I did then. It's a great place to learn about the many different industries that Maine was know for, from coastal fishing, potatoes in the County to logging and textiles. All the kids loved seeing the animal exhibits as well.
This place is outstanding! Filled with everything you'd want to know about Maine and is extremely well done. This is a museum you would expect to see in a higher-end location like Boston. So much to see. Good staff. Can't say enough about how great it is and so cost affective. Props for the wonderful contribution to Maine history
Thought it was done very well. Enjoyed my time there very much.
Knowledgeable staff and so many cool exhibits. A wide variety will keep the entire family interested!
I love visiting the museum! There’s always something new I notice and there’s so many exhibits! The bathrooms are very clean and there are places to sit and rest along the way should you need one. They do have ramps and elevators should you need those as well. The gift shops is very cute and has something for everyone!
We had lots of fun
So much fun. A great way to spend a afternoon with the kids. Fun and educational
I wasn't that interested
I love the State Museum. It shares and shows great history from Maine. Gemstones, Animals, Vehicles, Machinery. You name it, they got it! The prices for entry are un-beatable. The museum is also a Library and it has a gift shop. I once went to the museum and state house for a field trip in 5th grade. The museum has amazingly friendly service.
We enjoyed it very much. A lot of Maine history and wildlife presented nicely.
Went here on a goof because we had several hours to kill before an event and it was only $3 - all I can say is WOW!!!!!! This museum is fabulous!!!!! 4 floors of amazing displays, exhibits, hands on fun, history! Lots of great photo ops too. You MUST go, bring the kids, and allow yourself lots of time to see everything.
Beautiful way to learn about the state of Maines history and so many other interesting facts. Very entertaining and a great price.
Awesome exhibits!
Went there on a Saturday and it was free admission. Clean and wonderful local exhibits. Great place to bring your kids and fun for the adults as well.
Very interesting every one should go .
Alsome place for lots of maine history
Excellent displays.
Great price and an even better time!
This is one cool museum. It's a three leveled museum and it's so easy to go through. You will see a lot of motor functioning equipments that they use back in the day which amazing. You can also listen to the sound buy pressing some button. The customer service is good. Neat place to visit.
If you are looking for a good adventure to learn about Maine this is a good stop!
$3 for four levels of incredible history, including an authentic water powered mill. A definite must see if you enjoy history. The displays are truly top notch.
This is a true gem in the heart of Augusta. I can't tell you how many times I have visited and I always learn something new and enjoy the new displays. A recent visitor of ours from England couldn't stop commenting on how well done it was.
Great place to take the kids on a raining day. They have a lot of information and you defiantly can learn a lot about Maine History. They even have a videos showing how things were used. They have so much it really can take away the rainy day blues.
Interesting.
Right next to the public library and across from the Maine State Capitol. Gift shop present.
The taxidermy could be improved, but the displays and exhibits are interesting and informative. Leave yourself a few hours - there's a lot to see, and understand.
This is a great gem right by the capitol. It's got a little for everyone, and multiple floors -- much bigger than it would appear from the outside. Not expensive.
Pretty cute museum. Lots of interesting facts about Maine and Augusta's history
The children enjoyed it. Give yourself some time to take in everything. Many displays to see.
Really fun for kids to explore. We're planning on going back.
Great small local museum
Great to see Maine's history. Start in the top floor!
