Here you will see the opinions of people like you who consumed the services and products of Maine Maritime Museum (Museum) around Maine area.
Now this business receives a score of 4.7 stars out of 5 and that score was based on 532 reviews.
As you can see the average of ratings is practically the best one, and it's based on a high number of feddbacks, so we may be quite sure that the assessment is quite reliable. If many people have bothered to value when they are pleased, it works.
You know that we do not usually bother to put tatings when these are correct and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Museum is included in the category of Museum.
We went on a tour of the river and it was great as well.
This place is one of the gems of Maine... Really awesome to see the seafaring Heritage of bath and the whole lobster fishing culture of Maine. Good exhibits and good for kids
Was there 5 years ago and enjoyed it, 5 years later, all of the same old-same old, many of the exhibits need change over and updating. Carpets need serious cleaning Very expensive to get in
A work in progress. Lots of displays and information. Just need to organize it better. I would go again.
Found it very interesting and informative. Would visit again
Rich in original setting. non
A great look at the Maritime industry of Maine and it's leadership in US Maritime affairs.
Great place so many places to explore and discover. Make sure you plan to go on a sunny day many outdoor exhibits
Very educational very nice people very good overall great Lighthouse Cruise
We did the "By Land & Sea: The Bath Iron Works Story" tour and cruise. Then toured the rest of the museum. American history and current affairs at it's finest. Beautiful modern museum along with original historical structures.
A lot of informative information. They have demonstrations of the different things like blacksmith and making the ships. If you love boats you will definitely love this place. Did not have time to do the cruise but heard it was awesome
They were in the middle of renovating when I went there but still a nice Museum.
The museum is fantastic. The exhibits are very clearly laid out with a good amount of information. There is plenty to see and it is all so interesting. We visited with young children and several of the exhibits are hands on which made it fun for them. The grounds of the museum are beautiful and there is a nice play area for the kids. They also allow you to return for a second visit anytime within seven days which makes the ticket really great value.
This is always a "go to" place to take my out-of-state visitors. We get to share Maine's maritime history, enjoy the local maritime history and sometimes catch a boat ride. Our last visitors were so happy that they were able to see a bald eagle on our lighthouse cruise.
The museum provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about Maine's Maritime history, especially ship building, from the start to today. Somewhere around 5,000 ships, mostly wooden sailing ships of all kinds, have been built in the Bath, Maine area. Destroyers for the US Navy are still built in Bath, Maine. Besides displays in the modern museum, Craftsmen in legacy buildings explain and demonstrate skills necessary to fabricate sailing ships, the largest of which could haul 6,000 tons of coal. Land and sea tours are also available. One sea tour takes passengers upriver past the Bath Iron Works where 3 destroyers are presently being built. Another tour goes downriver to the coast. Yet another provides the experience of being a passenger on a 1906 schooner still in service. The museum is staffed by volunteers who are knowledgeable and friendly. As a bonus, Bath is a wonderful community to spend some time in.
I found the place to be very well done and very interesting. The bath Iron Works Museum which is a hundred yards up the road though very small I found to be interesting and a good compliment to the Main Building
Both the interior and exterior portions of the museum have many artifacts and some hands on things to do. The 1 hour boat cruise takes you to a few sites and past the Bath general dynamics company which is in the process of making 3 ships. There is a small cafe outside with a few menu items and drinks. Bring a sunhat!
COOL PLACE!!
Lots of history about the boat building that happened and happens in Bath. We did a Lighthouse Boat tour that was wonderful. It lasted 4 hours and we saw many lighthouses, dolphins, seals, went through a draw bridge, saw fishermen, sailboats, and so much more!
This is clearly the best Maritime Museum in the country. The only existing original wooden Shipyard that survived into the modern era. Exhibits in the museum are awesome and often changed. The staff and volunteers are amazing. The Kennebec River is awesome and the cruises offered by the museum memorable
If you're in Maine, and w/in a 2 hour driving distance of Bath, please, please, please.....visit this amazing museum. This is a great travel destination for the entire family, and a museum ticket is good for 2 days. This museum not only offers history and present for all things nautical, they also offer incredible day cruises, (additional fees), narrated tours and much more. The gift shop is well run and well stocked. Maine has an incredibly in-depth nautical history, and this museum ensures all have the opportunity to view and enjoy it.
Great exhibits and friendly people.
Lots of fun for the whole family!
Really nice educational talk a large amount of exhibits and a lovely boat tour. Your admission gets you 2 days and you can really use the extra time if you want to come back because there is just so much to see.
Amazing museum, so much to see there now. They let you come back again within the week with your receipt for a second visit so you can see everything!
The guide book said two hours but we were there more like 6. The location is the grounds of two Bath shipyards and many of the building are original. All are filled with exhibits detailing Maine's marintime history which also overlaps the nation's to a large degree. If you have time take the shorter boat tour. It includes museum admission and you get to see the river, wildlife, and the Bath Iron Works close up.
What a well put-together experience. Top notch video production.
Great museum covering everything you could imagine about the ships built in the area. We also took the lighthouse cruise which had informative commentary and beautiful views.
So much to do inside and outside the grounds! Great for adults and kids. Nice river tour too!
Great tour
Moment of history - awesome to see!
Stopped in and took a look around. It covers a lot of ground. Expansive. The gift shop is great! Nautical maps, interesting books and of course model ships and memorabilia. Offers reasonable membership and pretty good deals. Offers lighthouse tours, tour of the shipyard and more. Take a ride on a schooner. I'll be busy this summer! Can't wait.
Even if you can't stay for a visit, you will definitely be impressed by the partial skeleton - really a life-size partial model - of an immense wooden vessel built there back in the day. You can see it on the grounds. It is hard to believe just how big it was. The exhibits inside are worthwhile too.
Enjoyed the place,a great museum
So much to see, great history!
Great day trip, newly remodeled.
I only saw the gift shop which had lovely things, great variety, lighthouse passport stamp.
Great place, a lot of history and nice boat ride. Great place for the whole family.
The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath is a great place to spend a day. There are many exhibits on the history of the ship building that went on at this location during the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is a nice exhibit currently ongoing about the history of Bath Iron Works and the ships that have been built and are currently being built there. Bath Iron Works is right up the river from the museum and if you take one of the cruises you might get to see some of the newest ships of the US Navy. There is also a well done exhibit on the Mary E, a 1909 twin masted boat that was recently restored by the Museum. The Lighthouse exhibit is also not to be missed. There are many outbuildings that tell the story of the all of the various processes that were involved in the building of ships in that time frame. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Be sure to stop in the souvenir store, it has a good variety of items at very reasonable prices. All in all a great visit. Give yourselves a full day (or 2) to take it all in.
Worth the visit! They also have a room with all the tools and info about lobsters. Nice outdoor park.
Friendly fun museum, take the Land and Sea Tour and learn even more.
Great museum and artifacts.
Well worth the time spent. Recommend the Bath Iron Works and lighthouses tour. Great retelling and preservation of a significant part of American history
Nice museum of wooden boat construction but all were out of business since 1920s
My friend, a Maine man from generations of Bath shipbuilders and operators, took me here today. I'm from England and have a keen interest in wooden boats in particular. I found your facility very friendly and interesting. In particular we liked the man who told us how the ship launching was done. Please thank him from us, he was charming.
Llved the boat tour (3 hour). A lot of information.
Great history lessons here at the museum. Took us two days to explore it all.
Very cool place to go to when in Maine. Many things to see amd tons of history.
Love this museum!! This was my first time going, went as part of a class trip, it was amazing!! The models are detailed, the exhibits are well curated and the grounds you can explore are vast and so full of history!! I almost bought a membership right then and there! If you are ever in the area or even in the state of maine this place is a must go!! Can't wait to go back, hopfully when its warmer.
Awesome museum
The exhibits are great. We learned so many things about the boat building business and how rough the lives of the sailers were. So many things to see and do. Boat tour is a must.
Very interesting visit. Well presented exhibitions. Well worth the visit. Loved seeing the youngsters building their own boats.
As a part of a long weekend travel experience in Maine for a group of people that I led, one stop during our time in Maine was at the Maine Maritime Museum. I highly recommend the museum to anyone who has an interest in Maine's nautical history, ships, sailboats, and how the maritime industry operated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The tours and tour guides were excellent with an abundance of information about the nautical past in Maine. The exhibits were highly educational and I noticed the museum ran different types of programs throughout the year. In addition, you can go on a 3-4 hour lighthouse or coastal cruise, which is well worth the effort. I love this museum and cannot wait to return!
Lots of information and knowledgeable staff
Lovely people, fantastic exhibits, incredible boat tours and a really fun day!
Beautiful location, knowledgeable staff, and tons of history of the shipbuilding industry in Maine. Who knew that the most complete existing shipyard that had built wooden ships was sitting right there in Bath, ME? There are only a couple of other standing shipyards like it in the world today. We went on the shorter boat tour, with the captain giving us interesting tidbits along the way. We also got as close to Bath Iron Works as we could. How many people can say they've come within spitting distance from a Navy stealth destroyer? I can say that now.
This place is great. It is more than just the admission building. Be sure to check out all of the other buildings.
Maine Maritime Museum is one of the best maritime museums I have been to. Don’t forgot to take advantage of the onsite tour as well as one of the boat tours for a great experience. The gift shop is a treat and they have many community activities.
Excellent museum, very interesting, history on ship building. The Wyoming was a great vessel. A must stop place!
What a great museum! Lots to take in here. I loved walking through the Victorian era house which flowed right to the small boat displays right behind. The main museum has tons of awesome maritime history of the area as well as video interviews with current local shipbuilders. A must stop if you are in the bath area.
A fun well done museum with something for everyone. Well worth the visit. I recommend the boat tour which was informative and gives you a different perspective of the area. At one time Bath was an important port on the east coast.
We were visiting from out of town and happened to catch the Maritime Museum on their annual "Community Day" when they offered free admission and discounted boat tours. What a delightful afternoon! The museum is very well done with interesting exhibits about various aspects of ship building, lobster catching, and light house keeping. Many areas of the museum have informative videos which offer the benefits of a guided tour without the time constraints. The boat tour gave a nice opportunity to see a couple smaller light houses as well the BIW ship harbor. Overall, I'd recommend it as an excellent educational family destination.
Very informative museum with stuff for kids too
Great spot,¡!!
Great place to learn about bath maine
Great place to brush up on local history...
Always a fun place to go. This year we arrived before the out buildings were open for the season. Still, lots to see and do in the museum. The ship models and paintings are incredible. The curator and staff has spent some time on the exhibits and it shows. Excellent descriptive plaques within exhibits. Very well maintained, and clean. Went with our kids and they had fun too. Bonus... You get to see what Beth Iron Works had going on. And a great view of the river in all seasons. Very much worth the trip.
My husband and I took the shipyards and lighthouses cruise which was absolutely beautiful and very informative! We learned so much and saw some amazing views. Having admission to the actual museum in addition to the cruise was awesome. We loved getting to explore everything there. There is SO MUCH to see and learn about, so take your time and make sure you have a few solid hours to see everything. We had a lot of fun here and highly recommend visiting!!
It is a wonderful place to learn about the ship building history in New England. The buildings and grounds are organized perfectly. You need at least 2 1/2 hours to see the bare minimum. But to really learn and see the place in depth plan on half to a full day there.
Great history. The people were very informative with the tour.
Wonderful experience. Visited with a family group. Exhibits are great. Especially liked the new BIW exhibit. Took the lighthouse tour. Great time.
This is one of the best one of the best museum that I have ever been too. The grounds are huge, exhibits are kid friendly, and the boat tour is worth it.
Enjoyed seeing all the history of ships in that area.
A whole days worth of entertainment. Very nice.
Really interesting and fun museum. Took a really nice ride on the boat around the area.
Fun sail on the Mary E, always interesting to browse the galleries
A very nice museum that tells the history with beautiful exhibits very much recommend
A great place for young and old alike.
Would love to visit this again, Very fascinating place to be.
Exceptional museum on shipbuilding. Really nice. Takes several hours to see it all. Admission includes 2nd day free so you don't have to rush through it all. Offers nice scenic river cruises right from a dock right on the premises
Friendly staff and volunteers. Very interesting displays of Maine Maritime history.
A bit pricey but a lot to see
Took a splendid Lighthouse Cruise down the Kennebec River, past Seguin Light through Boothbay Harbor and the Sheepscot River back to MMM. Had a wonderful time with my husband, informative crew and friendly passengers. It was wonderful way to be on the water, see lots of wildlife and enjoy Maine on a gorgeous summer's evening.
Fantastic museum of the history of Maine's marine vessels. I have come to this museum since I was a boy, and I am pleased to say the quality has not lessened in the slightest. The Wyoming sculpture gives you a true sense of the massive size of these vessels. Classic displays like the boat launch demo are still going strong. I cannot recommend a museum experience more highly than that provided at Maine Maritime Museum.
I love places like that. I love to learn & this is a great place to do that
Fantastic place to visit! The Maine Maritime Museum is a sprawling property with several building, each with their own fascinating story. Bring the whole family for an educational visit and learn all about the many steps involved in ship-making. Cost is $17.50 per adult, but it's well worth it, and you'll spend at least two hours exploring without seeing everything.
If you like boats, visit here..if not.. it's a way to pass the day. I really enjoyed the lobster exhibit the most.
Very interesting. Well worth the admission. Improving daily.
Nice place. We took the river cruise and it was worth the money. We really enjoyed it.
Extensive information presented in a fun and interesting way. A high order Fresnel light with a full video and surround sound simulation of all types of weather and sounds encountered. Nice handicap accessibility, very good gift shop. Historic and original buildings where large wood seafaring boats hauled amazing loads of cargo. Take boat trip to Bath Iron Works and see modern shipyard where all the U. S. destroyers are still being built.
Originally I went here thinking that this was gonna be some boring museum but to my surprise there is a lot more than what meets the eye. The main area is very interesting and has some fun interactive parts. Then the other buildings were great. It was very nice to have people that can explain things in greater detail. Food could have been better but eh whatever it’s a museum not a restaurant. Now the best part was the boat tour which was really fun and interesting. Overall I would recommend to most everyone even if you don’t like boats that much.
Great history of the coast.
Wonderful museum. Great for the entire family. Nice gift shop as well. Worth checking out
The displays and the staff are top rate. My wife and I were there 3 hours, could have stayed longer but we had time commitments. The museum ticket price is very reasonable and you can come back within a 10 day period for free. Highly recommend this stop on a trip through maine.
Excellent museum! Definitely one of the best maritime museums we have been to. Interactive displays, indoor and outdoor displays and activities. The fee gets you a single return trip during the same week, so if need or want to, you can come back. Gift shop has a wide variety of amusements for all ages. Would definitely go again!
Was an extremely fun and a great learning experience about early wooden ships and how they were built. Also experienced the boat tour around Bath iron works and several land marks.
Lots to see. Level of enjoyment depends on your love for the sea.
Awesome place
this place is incredible! They have so much historic stuff, plus very knowledgeable volunteers. on top of that it is very affordable and they give you a 2nd day to return for free! good boat tours with lighthouses and ships, play ship for kids, bookstore, and much more. I would highly recommend stopping here anytime you are near bath! very easy to find, and they have truck/RV parking just past the main parking area.
Interactive, spacious and new. Great history pieces, although a little depressing given that it covers "dead" industry...
Great museum. Great gift shop. Great lectures and other events.
Wish I had an entire day to spend here!
Well done exhibits delving into Maine shipbuilding and coastal maritime history. The Kennebec River cruise is enjoyable and informative.
We took the BIW Land and Sea combined tour and give it a mixed review. The Tour Boat ride and guides on the boat that gave narration on the river and evolution of the area and ME maritime history was the highlight of the tour an was very good (rating 4.5, would have been 5 but for deisel smells from the boat). Tour of the Museum was good too (rating 4) and interesting (more interative exhibits would make it better.) We give give the BIW portion of the tour a 2 however and why the 3 overall. A little too much military contractor jargoon, way too much personal carreer at BIW / Greneral Dynanics / Goverment Contractor speak and a little over the top from our perspective. We're not anti-military by any stretch, but did leave the tour with both positive and negative feelings. Unless you're 100% Navy in background and interests or completely pro military, I'd go the museum and take one of the boat tours but skip the BIW portion.
This is a must, totally more than I thoughr!
Fascinating, and you can really picture what it would have been like to work there!
Great museum. I highly recommend visiting. We spent 4 hours and could have stayed another 4. So much to see.
Loved all the history
It's very near the Bath Iron Works shipyard and has some exceptional exhibits. Most impressive of these is a depiction, in full size, the schooner Wyoming with six masts.
Great Museum and Cruise...Highly reccomend!
The river cruise was great.
The Greatist Museum Ever Is Maritime Museum At Bath Maine The Best Place To Learn About Maritime History And Ships And Lighthouses And The History of The Shipyards of New England And Maine So Stop in A Enjoy Maritime In Bath Maine Today
Loved the guided boat tour!
Interesting stuff in the museum. We went on one of their boat rides to see lighthouses and ships being built at Bath Iron Works.
Very informative and great employees!
Very cool experience! I didn't realize this was a whole grounds experience and not just one freestanding museum. The one hour boat ride was alright, definitely not worth $37 but at least we didn't have to pay again for the museum access.
Lots of things to read, some interactive exhibits. Found it humorous that the whole place revolves around the building of a huge ship that foundered because it was too large for its own good. We arrived in the afternoon and it was practically a ghost town. Few staff, no other patrons.
AMAZING CREW. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. My wife and I discovered this place accidentally. We entered the facility hoping to see some cool town history when we discovered the crew of artisans building a vintage wood schooner. Then the crew of docents guided us around the place and introduced us to the men and women taking on the amazing task. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Thanks folks.
This is an amazing tourist attraction! It has a great, decently sized museum that is very informative and interactive! The ground are beautiful and it is great to take a walk and look at the other buildings! When our relatives came up to visit we took the 1 hour lighthouse/ BIW cruise and it was phenomenal! We had so much fun, it was well worth the time and money!!!
This place was a Hidden Gem. I knew nothing about it previous to visiting there. I was amazed at the ship building practices and history. It was just a wonderful visit.
Great museum in a fantastic setting. Always good exhibits and a warm welcome. Really top notch
Visited the Maine Maritime Museum during a recent roadtrip. A great place to visit if you're interested in this type of history. A Guide spent about 30 minutes giving historical details. He had a wealth of knowledge in the subject and we were given the opportunity to ask questions. A lot of area to walk around with boards containing detailed information about what you were seeing. Very peaceful place and interesting. Would definitely visit again. Museum has a gift shop and there's plenty of space for parking.
Whatever your motivation for visiting a maritime museum, this one will suit your needs. Enough to engage the kids while basking in the rich and storied history of the trade.
We at Purple Orchid Events recently planned a wedding at the Maine Maritime Museum. Such a beautiful spot filled with lots of Maine history! Check them out for a venue site.
Stood at the hostess desk for 5 minutes and didnt see a single worker.
What an amazing museum. If you are a fan of the history of wooden ships, the men that built them and the tools they used then this place is a must see.
Informative with an awesome museum. Loved the skeleton of a ship build by Bath Iron Works. Took a water tour and got a great sense of the area. Loved the Lobster Bug!!
Fun place to go very hands on
Excellent place for history! Greatly enjoyed the experience, the staff was very polite and courteous. I highly recommend this place.
Really interesting place. The 1 hour river cruise is worthwhile, especially if you want to see a Zumwalt class destroyer up close.
The museum is nicely done. They have several restored original buildings with interesting displays. The museum also has nicely done displays of shipwrecks, lighthouse light, model ships, etc. You can also take a trolley ride around parts of town and the shipyards. There is also boat ride to see some lighthouses and the shipyards.
We are Members, we come several times a year and bring family & friends! Our Membership includes free admission, discounts on cruises and at the gift shop, plus free admission to many other museums! Wonderful exhibits and very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Everything is laid out well and there are several buildings that house different exhibits. We've taken lighthouse boat cruises on the Merrymeet and they're awesome! Lots of eagles, seals, and other wildlife. We recommend this museum highly!
I was honestly pretty surprised by how much fun I had at this museum. The lay out on the water is cool, and the various buildings you go through help break up the experience. It is certainly worth checking out and is very worth the cost.
This was a phenomenal museum and knowledgeable staff to answer questions. I would highly recommend going!!
Very interesting history and actual shops used to build the ships.
The boat tour is very cool. The museum is nice. It is worth a visit.
This is a great small museum, that puts on great regular events, at their prime location on the waterfront in Bath.
Great museum with excellent staff.
What a gem! This is an excellent museum, and we only saw the indoors exhibits because we visited in winter. Lots of excellent exhibits, and fun things for kids to do as well. We will definitely visit in the summer to take in the rest of the campus as well. A great family museum!
A very good tour. Something not to be missed.
What a surprise this was. There was so much more to see than expected. I do recommend doing this.
A pleasant surprise. A huge museum built on two former ship yards. The buildings are intact and you can view the step by step building of 18th and 19th century wooden ships. Be prepared to walk a short distance between buildings and to climb some stairs. The main building is new and has a variety of interactive exhibits. There is also a restored schooner that sails regularly and a small cruise boat. The guides are professional and helpful.
Great exhibits, friendly staff wonderful location.
An incredible piece of ship building history. Pictured is a boat being built here by elementary students from the local school. I highly recommend coming here!
Great history and story of Maine Maritime. Lots to see and soak up.
With I had more time...like a whole day. Bring the kids...plenty of interactive displays.
Very nice museum, lots of great information and exhibits to see. Especially loved coming aboard the schooner "Mary E" and the ship launching demonstration. Our 3 year old spent a good amount of time playing on the play ship. We spent about two hours here; I imagine that is probably pretty typical for most visitors.
Loved it. So much to see. Ticket is good for 2 days as long it is used within 7 day period.
Fantastic exhibits. Beautifully done. A must see.
Too expensive, not enough to see
Museum stellar: interactive, incredible maritime artwork. BIW tour Exceptional...truly passionate & knowledgeable docents! Can't wait to see new gardens w/ native plantings. The grounds w/ outbuildings dedicated to the shipbuilding past of
One of my favourite museums! I love nautical history and the collection at this museum is lots of fun. A beautiful location wonderfully juxtaposed the Bath Iron Works, it was a pleasure to roam. The sculpture of the Wyoming was a great centerpiece, and seeing the antique small craft was also very interesting. One of the best touches in my opinion was the way the original buildings were handled (at least in the off season). Using background sounds that represent the work being done was a very good way of immersing us in the subject matter. I first thought the admission price was high, but for a two day ticket for such a well done museum I'd pay that price all day long.
Very nice and extensive museum.
All the times I've been here, I've learned something new. This a great place for middle school and high school students. Lots to see and do. Cool boat craft exhibit with the opportunity to work if you are interested. They have boat rides available as well as a new Maine lobstering and lighthouse exhibit. Highly recommend it, even if you've already visited before. Well worth a visit.
Very well laid out, great details. Vet the map as not all of the 'out' buildings are are labeled on each entrance.
Excellent museum for some salty Maine history. Really cool location.
We stayed for over four hours! The exhibits were interesting and well presented. The boat ride yielded interesting history, a view of two modern battleships, and sights of seals and ospreys.
Enjoyed the boat ride and the museum
