As you know, we do not usually stop to place tatings when they are positive and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Museum corresponds to the category of History museum.
Very interesting tour. The 1800 furniture is beautiful, this history and heritage was very educational. Well worth the visit.
Experience the live of a King This is the vacation home of king Kamehameha... hard to believe. It’s the perfect location over looks the water. The house is quite spacious... the king sure knows how to enjoy life. The admission is an inexpensive $10 and you can always pick up a little present at the end from the gift shop. Happy travels.
Original and authentic Hawaiian Palace here. Summer home of the royalty. A great museum of Hawaiian history. A definite must if you are the museum type.
Incredible artifacts and architecture. If you go on a Sunday, you'll have a chance to have Kenneth as your tour guide...what a phenomenal person. He's got a love for the history, and it shows.
Facinating history of the tribes and Chiefs
Well preserved and maintained, old Hawaiian Heritage.
Visited the Palace on our final day in Hawaii which is unfortunate as it was our only bad experience on the island. We entered the grounds from the north side and walked along the ocean path of the property. Everything was looking good to view the property and palace. Unfortunately when we approached the back (front?) porch, we noticed a small sign on the far side of the lawn. This sign, which you could only read after crossing the lawn, was a notice not to walk on the lawn... I'll say I felt a bit bad at this point since I had obviously broken a rule immediately, but saw no reason to break the rule again when leaving. We came up on the porch and were told rather rudely to leave and that 'We don't enter from this side and we don't cross the lawn'. Also "No Pictures" was shouted at us from inside. We were then followed off the grounds by someone from inside the house. My only advice if you want to visit, is enter from the front door and don't bother with the ocean side.
Friendly docent and a wonderful stop. Lots of history in this building. Beautiful architecture!
Nice place with some history.
Neat place to visit and see Hawaiian history
There were very few people here when we toured here and the docent spent a lot of time with us and gave us a great tour. Very informative and we learned a lot about the Hawaiian royal families. I highly recommend this tour.
Very underwhelming. 4 rooms and a foyer. If you're in Kona, visit it, but otherwise, pass.
Always something going on here, today an Hawaiian wedding. And the next day we went back for a free concert. The museum is worth the price of entry to get a "real" education about the islands, it's people, their history and culture.
Very informative about the history of Hawaiian royal families. The docents are very nice and will answer any questions. Probably not great for children.
Me being Hawaiian, This is the greatest place ever.
Beautiful little palace!
Humble royal palace with green lawn and private collection museum and there is lovely garden by the ocean.
Interesting slice of Hawaiian history in a gorgeous house. I didn't know Hawaiian royals introduced surfing to the mainland. Some original furniture, koa wooden items, like fish smashers. Dont miss the royal bath, just beyond the gift shop. Helpful and informative staff person. Just a couple of rooms to see and great bay views from the lanai. Interesting items in gift shop but they need to tell the Nene story. There are lots of fabric geese here to purchase. No public restrooms. Entrance fee.
My family is Hawaiian so maybe I'm biased, but I thought it was so thorough, even though they said our guide was new, I thought she did a fantastic job telling the stories and history of every object in the whole building. She shared so much Hawaiian history and language with us. Mahalo nui loa!
Great place
A great place to learn the historical facts of old Hawai'i
Really important to take a tour so that you know the stories behind the artifacts. Makes the visit so much more impactful. Really cool place!
Interesting piece of history. Worth the small walkthrough. You will have to take off your shoes, so be prepared.
Beautiful setting and tour is worth it, learn alot about the Hawaiian royal family and culture! Mahalo!
Great experience for those interested in the history of Hawaiian leadership. Lots to see and read about.
Beautiful views from the palace. It is a wonderful walkthrough of the palace and the guides were sweet and helpful. No shoes allowed inside.
Beautiful and interesting
Small fast to see
Does that it was closed for repair. A great Hawaiian landmark
A lovely walk back in time! The guides were helpful in discussing and educating us on the history of the structure as well as the royal family. Unfortunately I was unable to visit several times due to events that were taking place, but not on the website. I would call before visiting to ensure you can gain access to the palace.
Very interesting history tour. Recommended.
Lots of interesting history. The ladies were nice. Our tour guide was very informative. He did a great job.
Must see, and dolphins playing just off shore.
Wow was this unbelievable stop, the history between these walls is felt. Plus the artifacts give you a true sense of the period. Please stop, it’s well worth the $10 admission.
Beautiful Palace from late 1800's.. Loved the solid wood floors and the displays!
Beautiful, however if you going to charge 10.00 each I expect an offical tour. You can't take pictures
Very interesting historic site. Nice lesson on Hawaiian history.
Lovely place to visit and get a sense of Hawaii when there was a monarchy. Easy to get to but parking is a bit difficult.
This was a rare house for the time period that it held a complex royal family. It was relaxing to go through the rooms of this quaint house filled with beautiful wooden furniture, and large bowls. It being so close to the beautiful ocean side, I could imagine how Grand it must have been at one time. If you go, there is a 45 min. tour, given twice a day. Favorite spot in the house was the downstairs breeze way at back door, over looking the ocean. My second favorite spot was the upstairs window, which carried a soothing breeze, again over looking the ocean. When you first enter the house you will be asked to remove your shoes. Socks are ok to wear.
Hulih'e Palace is a short walk from the pier. The grounds are well-maintained. The palace gives a glimpse into the comfortable life affluent people enjoyed in days of old. But, admission is pricey.
The staff was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about explaining the historical subject matter of the artifacts contained in the museum
A wonderful local treasure. Good place to learn about Hawaiian history.
The palace is right by Ali'i dr., post card pix
Looked very nice but was closed for repairs
I appreciate the time and effort that it took to restore and keep this memory.
Some intersting artifacts from Hawaii's history...did a self guided tour....but overheard a guided tour and it was a lot more interesting. No place to sit down. No place to eat. A museum. Interesting....not sure if it was worth the entrance fee.
Lovely location with a great selection of historical artifacts, well worth a visit. Photos are not allowed inside, so you'll just have to visit
great opportunity to learn some earlier years and understand the development
A very historic site
Very interesting place to visit. When we were there, they were having native Hawaiian dancing on the grounds.
Spend the time to hear all the stories that the matrons have to tell there. Very interesting and gives new feeling to the wonderful Kona and other Aina.
Lots of history to view
A great exhibit of Hawaiian history. Knowledgeable docents.
A must see
Small but very nice museum, show some how the king and king's family live before and how big they was!
Ticket is expensive compared to other historical places.
Great place
Interesting history, beautiful location. Small fee to enter. We were eye-balling great places on the lawn between the palace and the ocean where we could set up a table and do an amazing oceanfront treatment! One day, one day.
Very informative! The staff are welcoming and were extremely knowledgeable. Be advised, you cannot wear shoes into the palace.
Prince Kuhio celebration, fabulous hula!
It feels like you're stepping back into history. What a stunning palace full of art and artifacts. I really enjoyed strolling, barefoot of course, from room to room. Beds, armoirs, desks and fill these huge rooms. A warm breeze from the ocean flows into the palace from large windows on every wall. My only complaint is that NO photography was allowed. Would have been nice to share pictures with family and friends on the mainland.
If you want to know the history of Hawaii this is a great place to start.
Beautiful historic landmark
The tour is a must do. Very informative.
Quite interesting!
They offer guided tours, it's a really neat historic location.
Very interesting...great Hawaiian history!
A beautiful setting to watch a hula show.
Lots of great history gathered here
Nice area to walk through by the water
This is one great place to stop by to get some feeling of old days on the Island, to see the gorgeous mansion, beautiful garden and pretty awesome view around. A must stop for anybody visiting area for the first time to “get the feeling”. Here is no admission fee, but you need to remove your shoes to respect the house.
Cute. Informative but tiny.
Closed due to storm damage. No opening date listed.
Nice quiet place behind the church.
Soooooooo nice
Great little museum and beautiful woodworking.
Was amazing to see....Good history lesson
Beautiful home... A little pricey for 6 small rooms with random furniture assortment. Odd docents.
Amazing to learn about the Hawaiian culture. The guide and everyone there where amazing
Great visit. Wonderful information given by hosts. Friendly cat. A great place to visit.
Beautiful and very Regal.. Love it! A must to see if your in Kona!
Good piece of history. No pictures of the inside are allowed, shoes must be removed.
My friend had a wedding here and it was beautiful.
Full of beautiful artifacts. Loved the High Tea they put on once a month.
Great to see some of the historical artifacts of the Hawaiian people but disappointed in the poor preservation of many of the pieces. Strangely, no public bathroom on the property or gift shop.
It's beautiful from the outside. I didn't go in . I came a group of 8 . We just standing outside by the sidewalk trying to figure out where should we go. Sorry maybe next time ok. Mahalo :)
Never been there but it is a part of Hawaii's Alii history. Going with members of Daughters of Hawaii made it memorable.
Absolutely worth the trip. This was a great place to learn about the Hawaiian history.
Lovely piece of old Hawaii. Nice cultural insight. Definitely worth a visit. Occasional traditional Hula on the lawn.
Beautiful. The period dressed tour guide had excellent knowledge of the property, royal family, and Hawaiian culture and history.
Didn't visit the church, just went to the gift shop to support them.
Great tour guide and interesting artifacts and history.
Very interesting. Learned a lot about the history
Worth the visit. Beautiful original antique furniture
A very fascinating and informative tour, and a great way to spend an hour or less while exploring Kona. $10 admission, with a small gift shop.
This is a marvelous 1.5 + hour event in the middle of downtown Kailua Kona. The docents are excellent & authentically dressed and really liven up the small museum. The woven & clay pots are great . . . Especially the long stemmed ones used to collect fresh water flowing into ocean through the cracks in the lava rocks! Fun views & restful sitting in the garden by water wall.
Beautiful and fantastic grounds on the shore's of the big island. Due to the apparent small size of the palace, however, and a quick look through the front doors, we couldn't justify the admission price for what probably would have been a fifteen to twenty minutes tour. Probably learned more about Hawaiian royal culture on the signs outside of the building.
What an incredible place to visit... walking in this building (no shoes allowed) was like walking through a time warp into the past. I learned of the history of the royalty of past Hawaiian culture and the many women that organized the group called the "Daighters of Hawaii" who organized years ago I attempt to salvage this palace and open it up as a museum to preserve a vital piece of history. The building is small, two stories several rooms, however made me imagine the enormous feel it must have had as natives where living in huts still. It was incredible to see ancient tools and jewelry worn and used by past native Hawaiian royalty along with grasping a clear picture to cultural superstitions of shadows befalling people and executions (I wont go in depth as that would spoil this adventure). The host is extremely educated and was very kind and attentive to all my questions. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Oh, No pictures allowed inside... bummer but the experience will create everlasting memories!
Tourist trap but worth a look
Best chicken I have ever had
Small but worth the time. Beautiful furniture and interesting pictures. The docents we're very enjoyable to chat with.
A Sunday concert on the lawn was enjoyable. But the real draw is the history of the islands and a look back on where the Aloha spirit came from that is housed inside the palace. Well worth a visit.
no parking, no shoe allowed, $10 fee, very confusing private property plus museum combination, dont even bother to walk in. I really regret of put this place in my plan, waste a lot of time on walking down here. Kona really should organize their attraction resources.
Beautiful piece of such sad history. What the United States has done & Continues to do to these Hawaiian people is WRONG! GIVE THE PEOPLE BACK THEIR ISLANDS.
Loved it!
Awesome piece of history of the Royal family on the Big Island. Worth the $10 in my eyes, great tour guides as well.
Historical center well kept. Costs 10 dollars to get in.
As a person who loves history and worked in an archives I can tell you this is one of the most beautiful well-thought-out positive places I've never been it's especially beautiful when the bands are playing and they are Hawaiian dancers doing the hula
People were not walking around that day so I didn't know who to follow or what to do . The service was awesome and very unique. I enjoyed the peaks.
Hawaiian racism... Ugly! Get some manners . Go here if you want to be put down for not being hawaiian. The douche of a "caretaker" made old women cry with his shouts of "respect" you pay that guy to do that? Mexico next year FOR SURE. Respect that.
Nice
Beautiful Hawaii
Gorgeous palace. Great place to learn about Hawaiian royalty and history. A must stop if you love architecture, interior design and learning more about the big island.
The self tour doesn't take long. For a "palace", it is small. Lot of interesting artifacts inside.
Loved the historical value ive missed in just not being familiar with the history of Hawaii.
Beautiful collection if artifacts. Well preserved. This place is for people interested in Hawaiian history.
Great fishing spot
Food is awesome
Fun way to get a break from the heat and learn something! It's a cheap price for admission, you can either do a formal tour or walk around yourself. Each room has information about the artifacts and whose room it was.
It was just OK. If you've never seen a nice home from the 1800s, or you're very interested in Hawaiian royal ancestry, then you'll find it more interesting. The grounds are very pretty, right on the water. A relaxing place. It has no restrooms. $8 for adults to enter the palace. Walking the grounds are free.
Very cool historic home. Its a bit small and $10 admission per person felt a little steep, but I never complain about contributing money to preserve historical sites. You will take your shoes off before you go in and no photos are allowed inside. Beautiful place, beautiful historical artifacts, charming little museum.
Excellent history of Hawaii shared by docent with backdrop of royals portraits and impressive display rooms. Worth the time!
Interesting artefacts and exhibits on display
Very interesting. Love the history.
Cool place, check out the huge trunk!
Over priced not worth $10 to walk insde
An important structure in the Island's history, and a very lovely place.
Cool place to visit, good views.
Lovely place!
Great history very good staff really enjoyed it
The museum itself is a great piece of history in the historic section of town, and we enjoyed the exhibits. The house is lovely, and the views and breezes from the porch are exceptional. We did find the organization that runs the museum to be a bit too strict... 1. You have to take your shoes off to enter the museum. 2. The lawn could be a great public square for the city, but even though it's open to the public, the signage and attitude of the museum personnel make it clear that they don't want people hanging about. 3. Even though there is a bathroom obviously built as a public restroom, it's open to employees only. At $10/person for admission, they should have a bathroom for guests 4. There are no pictures allowed, and I couldn't see any discernable reason why ...
We spent way longer here than we expected, the contents, although relatively few, were riveting. The staff could talk story for hours which is all right with me. Funny thing, we were there on the Friday before Ironman, I would have thought the site would be crowded but that wasn’t the case...lucky for us. Too bad photography was not allowed, oh well.
Friendly, knowledge docents. House has four rooms with many artifacts. There is an admission fee. Home was originally a vacation home for Hawaiian Royalty.
If you can get there on a free day well worth it. But otherwise it is to much to see
Tiny museum but great artifacts from early Hawaiian royalty
It's interesting to see a place that was built in 1839, used by Hawaiian royalty, and that is still standing today for visitors to see.
Lot of history worth the $10.00 a person learn about what happen to the Hawaiian kingdom and the royal family and their education and life.
Interesting piece of Hawaiian history. Fabulous guided tours by knowledgeable docents.
Really nice event as part of the Kailua-Kona Sunday events
Great place to visit.
The museum design and educational texts make it easy to envision how people once lived here.
It was just incredible, the staff was courteous and helpful. I would return with my family and take more pictures
Queen's palace. Worth visiting.
There is a fee to get in, but we saw a couple of groups try to walk in because they didn't read the sign. Passes are purchased from the gift shop, which is a short walk to the left. If you go behind the gift shop, you can see the private bath. Return back to the palace and leave your shoes on the steps. My husband and son opted to wait for my daughter and I to go through the tour by taking in the amazing ocean view. My 10 y.o. was given the opportunity to go on a treasure hunt to find some objects, and she zipped from room to room. I could have easily spent way more time reviewing all the displays. At first I thought $10 was more than I wanted to spend, but it was worth it. Be respectful. This is a palace of royalty. Next time I will take a guided tour.
A pleasant diversion from the touristy Kona Ali drive area and a good glimpse at when this was a much quieter place. It is an interesting look at the merge of 'western' and Hawaiian cultures.
Beautiful place
Absolutely beautiful! The staff is awesome, very friendly & knowledgeable.
A guided tour would have been better
small palace along the shoreline
Very quaint museum that tells of the history of the monarchy in Hawaii. Also, we were greeted by a very friendly black cat.
Lots of beautiful koa furnishings from the HAWAIIAN kingdom a must see when coming to kona and the ocean is it's backyard.
I volunteer at the Palace. It's one of the JOYS of my life. We are so blessed to have Hulihe'e Palace and Mokuaikaua Church here in Kona. So much History.
A human pitbull is guarding this place after 4 pm. There was a middle age lady who climb on the wall so she could take pictures of the sunset. The guard yelled at her 'Get your a$$ off the wall.' This ruined the moment for everyone around. These people must have had negative experiences with tourists, so they treat them extremely rude after hours. I would recommend to review the rules for everyone sake. Whatever happened to all the Alohas and Mahalos? This was the only negative on my week long trip on this island. I hope this helps the owner to find a favorable solution. Don't be the black sheep on this beautiful place.
Beautiful architecture and location. $10 admission was a little high though.
Beautiful place to visit. There is no guided tour on fridays, but the janitor was so awesome and helped us out with some of the history.
Interesting place to visit
Called and were told (by a live person) last Sunday (1/20/19) would be a good time to visit. When we got there it was closed for cleaning. The gift store was open according to a sign on the gate...not! Disappointed.
