This Coffee Shop is classified in the category of American restaurant.
Very nice, comfortable place to eat. Service was awesome and friendly. We went for breakfast which was good. Would have liked to have seen more avocado on the toast. Other than that food was good.
So disappointed. AVOID if you want quick or even decent service. My mom and I were visiting and had a terrible experience. The waiter was nice but inexperienced and the managers didn't care. It was clearly a management and overall restaurant problem. It took 10 minutes just for someone to come to our table. We ordered coffee which took another 20 minutes to get to us only to be served cold coffee. Food orders were messed up, but no one ever came back to our table so we sat with our messed up food and ended up just eating it after another 30 minutes of trying to flag servers down. My mom didn't actually get a hot coffee until about 45 minutes of being there. And on top of everything, they told us they were going to take off the messed up order, and then ran the card at the full amount?! We're normally super patient and understanding, but this was just crazy. We honestly felt bad for the waiter because I doubt he's getting any tips from tables with the way the shop is run.
A perfect stop for breakfast. The service was fantastic and the prices are reasonable. If you're in the area, stop by! We recommend the omelettes and coffee. The atmosphere is ideal in this college town.
Really love the cozy atmosphere here. It almost has been a European pub feel to it with all the dark wood. The food is also good. The pulled pork and sweet potato fries are amazing. Trivia here is always a blast with a fun and rowdy crowd. Great questions and prizes!
Great service, excellent food, Carolina Classic!
Awesome place!! Front host said: from coffee to cocktail!!
Service was a little slow. Did was good, but not great.
Greatest staff around, so attentive, funny and bright. 10/10 will come back again!
Very dissatisfied with the service, coffee, and food. Couldn't recommend, will not be back. Especially considering that they weren't busy, very unimpressed. Under seasoned food, over brewed coffee, cold/room temp. food, over cooked eggs, and a very inattentive server. We had to go to the bar just to get the food fixed. Very disappointed overall.
The staff was amazing
Food is actually pretty good. A tiny bit overpriced.
Had a great time at the newly renovated space! Service was on point. And the food was even better! Definitely get the truffle rosemary thyme fries and brussel sprouts, and steak sliders!
I enjoyed my pancakes and bacon, but the actual dining experience just wasn't all that. They have the tables so close together in now that it is just simply not a pleasant dining experience. I don't want to go to a restaurant and spend 20 bucks to sit as close to the person at the table beside me as I am to my dining companion. That is just simply not cool.
Food and service was amazing.
This is a nice place for an early bite to eat. They have a nice bar with good drinks, buy they close early, around 10
Excellent food. Nice atmosphere and reasonably priced. Service was friendly and attentive.
Great place for a date or a couple of drinks with friends. Cozy booth atmosphere lends to conversation.
Great place for great food. Delicious breakfast. And lunch items.
Coffee was a little weak, but the food was excellent
Great place for a coffee or special coffee cocktail. We sat at the bar and ordered a seasonal spiced coffee drink. It was delicious and well presented.
Good coffee, friendly service
Not a coffee & study place. It's a restaurant.
We sat there for 10 min and no one came over, after we placed our order, another 15 minutes passed, no drinks nothing.... we were there for about 1hr and more than half the time, we sat there waiting for someone to notice us
Good coffee, excellent service. Food was OK
Terrible food and service. No toilet paper in the women’s restroom.
Love the atmosphere and food. A true franklin st establishment
I actually like how the cafe is decorated. Very nice service as well
Enjoyed the avocado toast for brunch. The dressing on the arugula salad was supurb.
Good food kinda slow
Really good coffee and food.
During my holiday in Chapel Hill this was the best coffee place. The pecan pie was soo good (never tried that before, so for me it was the best pecan pie) and the service was great!
Used to recommend, but today not! Bitter coffee cold biscuit...c.c.s. omelet with cheese but where? Not enough, ingredients fall all over the plate. Nice space though. Will say manager was sympathetic and discounted 20%.
Barista, full bar and restaurant all in one!
Always friendly, everyone-knows-your-name type place. Food is fresh and good. They used to have amazing well drink specials (perhaps they still do and it's been a while). American pub food, but a bit healthier with many vegetable and salad options.
Fairly good coffee but it costs quite a bit.
Delicious spot for breakfast/lunch. Our server was delightful and the food was great!
Weird atmosphere. Not welcoming. It's called a coffee shop but I'm not sure why. Feels more like a pub maybe. I won't be returning.
Not as cold it crowded as Starbucks...nice wait staff at bar
Great place, comfortable & good selections priced well!
Great renovation and fun environment! Amazing experinence for Carolina fans right here on Franklin street. Can’t wait to come back!!!!!
Chapel Hill tradition - nice food , lovely atmosphere
Food was decent. But way over priced. Charge $6 for a peanut butter jelly for kids that come with no sides or a drink., Was not given a kids menu to know prices. Eat on Franklin St daily but believe me I will never step foot in this place again.
I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere is awesome and seemingly the perfect coffee/pub spot in a beautiful college town. The hostess was very nice- but the service was poor. I ordered a cappuccino and the waiter told me the barista was new and too slow so he didn’t recommend it. WTH?! I’m not sure I’ve ever had that happen- especially in a restaurant supposedly known for their coffee-so we ordered regular coffee instead. It was bitter and tasted burned so I didn’t drink it. My husband did and was met with a mouth full of grounds. The eggs benedict was just okay- the grits were fantastic. By the time we waited on our food and the waiter found the time to check on us- I could have tried the cappuccino after all. I asked for the manager and was told they hadn’t ‘clocked in’ yet. Really disappointing!
Nice breakfast and good price
Good food, good drinks, good people. Coffee Shop is a longtime favorite spot, but the updated menu is AWESOME, and has plenty of options for meat lover/gluten free/vegetarian folk to eat and drink together.
Ordered a Bagel with Cream cheese and grits. When the food came, grits were cold as ice (so much that my frozen butter just hung out in there like ice cube in ice water). The bagel was $4 and it was toasted but also cold and appeared to have come out of a mini bagel package that you buy at the supermarket. Along side the bagel was a single self served creamcheese was cold and not really smear-able. On top of all this, I had to wait 45 minutes to get my cold food. I get it, its student run and all, but its pretty poor service. I don't like posting negative stuff, but you guys need to step it up a lot.
We had a great time during our visit to CCS!! The ambiance in this place is wonderful!! Friendly staff, priced great and fast service!! Highly reccomended!!
Nice place to be but slow service
Loved brunch. The updates to the restaurant are awesome. The new owners are definitely on the right track!
Excellent Bloody Mary bar and order a dirty Russian. Espresso tastes smooth and bold Awesome service too
This restuarant and the service was amazing. The food taste so good I felt like I was going to be over stuffed. So good I finished dessert before dinner. Lol Great Place to Go !!!!!
What a huge disappointment. I was looking forward to southern hospitality and great food, and received everything but. I was seated and observed 2 parties that came in after me receive service. I said something to the hostess and eventually a young man came over with zero people skills. He was rude and I therefore chose to leave. Carolina Coffe Shop, I expected so much more .
An old and very historical institution that provides many memories for many . Food is outstanding and service always exceeds expectations. Always come here over the years and will continue to do so, God willing.
It's a charming, traditional Chapel Hill destination. Some traditional menu items are served. Recent remodel looks great!
Friendly staff, cozy, delicious Benedict’s eggs
Delicious food. Affordable. Nice atmosphere in an historic setting, just off Franklin Street.
Fantastic cocktails and dinner all around. Everyone is always incredibly kind at Carolina Coffee Shop. Great food, drinks and people, must be the reason it's stuck around since 1922! Will definitely be coming back often
A local centerpiece
Great spot with great food and drinks. Their bartenders are friendly, but the cute blonde one makes the best drinks, in my opinion.
Love this place. Been for brunch and dinner in the last few months and noticed big improvements in food and service. Friendly staff, historic charm and chill atmosphere—can’t wait to come back to CCS!
Good breakfast
Our party of 3, arrived at 5 pm, hoping to have a lovely meal. All of our dinner entrees arrived lukewarm despite the restaurant being only partly full, no large parties. My friend 's pork chop was tough and inedible and she spit out her 1st bite. The server was notified. There was nothing else on the menu that she wanted, so she opted to just order some fries instead. When the check came, we questioned why we were charged half the price for the pork chop meal when it was sent back. The server said that the cook said that my friend "had eaten half the pork chop" so she had to pay for half the dinner. But she did not eat but one bite, which she had to spit out! The management was not willing to change the charges. We would not recommend. Cold food . Poor quality. Poor customer service in handling the situation. Very bad experience.
Popular and calming coffee shop on Franklin with indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is really humble and nice and the selection of food is vast and fitting for any time of day. The food itself is really delicious and beautifully presented, the only issue is that is it super pricey, so definitely come with family or a partner to help with the tab...
Not, in fact, a coffee shop
Light food, good service
Good grits.
Awesome brunch
One of the last remaining of the old franklin street business. Very cool atmosphere and the staff is very nice.
It's cozy but certainly overpriced. It's not a selling point that the restaurant is old, because that makes it an exhibit for people to come in, stare at, then leave. If I wanted the food sold here at a lower price, I can easily find I elsewhere - as poorly priced as the food is, the ambience and setting is nice, nice enough to sit down for a cup of joe on a cold day.
As a former bartender I enjoyed the conversation and the positivity of the young man who served me at the bar; while I sipped on a smooth and delicious coffee.
Good breakfast in a charming atmosphere.
Eight of us went here for the first time. We only ordered coffee, but the staff treated us as if we ordered lobster. They were wonderful! When I told them it was one of our friend's birthdays, they got excited and made it special for our group. They go above and beyond here.
Great customer service.
Was easy to find the reservation, gumbo was really good. Service is great!
I had an allergic reaction to the sandwich that I ordered, then had the pleasure of paying for the sandwich that I couldn’t eat. Won’t be back.
Knowledgeable staff offer a "dirty" soy chai and explained it, based on my original request. Tasted great. Great beet spinich salad
With a line this long it has to be good right? Well mine was very good but staff was stretched keeping up with all those customers on a Sunday morning.
I'm not familiar with the area and was looking to find a chill place to get a cup of coffee. Given the name of the business, I was expecting to see pour over stations and college kids sitting around on comfortable furniture doing homework with crappy coffee house music playing in the background. I was excited to find a place where I could get a drink that wasn't made from over roasted coffee beans. This is very much a food place that happens to have an espresso machine and a drip coffee maker. It did seem to be a nice place to grab lunch or go out with some friends, but to call yourself a coffee shop and you aren't using bad puns of your favorite science fiction movie to name the many basic coffee drinks you want to sell just seems like false advertising to me. I guess the people around here have a better option hidden from google maps or they actually prefer Starbucks.
Super friendly and helpful staff. The free wifi is really great too. It's a nice spot to get some coffee and get some work done!
lets just start out my management has no class. overheard manage talking with staff regarding issues that are clearly issues that have been going on for years with current waitresses at this establishment trying to start trouble. when you are young some people just dont know better but management should. get rid off the (old) bad apples before you spoil the whole restaurant.
I was in at an off time of day, so the place was not crowded. I got good service, the food was as expected, the server attentive without being pushy. All in all a good lunch at a reasonable price.
At risk of being a millennial meme... the Avacado Toast at lunch is delicious!
Great chicken sandwich
Great corned beef hash. The biscuits and gravy were also good (awesome gravy), but the biscuits were much tougher than expected and hard to cut through.
Warm and friendly staff, great menu and food and atmosphere! I'd give 6 stars if I could!
They're iced chai tea and waffle we're both awesome! I would definitely recommend as a brunch spot.
Great CCS omelette and added sausage gravy to my biscuit - excellent down home options!
Stopped by here just to grab coffee. Such a fantastic spot. The coffee was delicious, and staff extremely friendly and polite. Cool ambiance inside, and nice outdoor seating area up front. Plenty of seating inside and reasonable prices. Can’t wait to try their food.
Very attentive, friendly and helpful staff on my recent visit. I had the grilled chicken, bacon and brie sandwich on a brioche bun with garlic parmesan fries and it was super delish!
Amazing food, coffee and service!
Best food on Franklin street!
Extremely slow service: 45 minutes from order to table. Did not ask for our drink orders. Salad served with no dressing. Burned burgers and buns. Understaffed with one hostess and one waitress for the entire restaurant. Salad greens mixed into the French onion soup. Terrible experience and do not ever intend to eat there again. Sorry I took my friends there.
Meh... Very long wait time and the quality of food is just average.
The Iced coffee was good. The Chips and salsa were pretty poor. $5.25 for some store bought chips and bland Pico. The side salad that came with the sandwich was also just pretty standard.
Expected a little more "pizzazz" from the food. Very generic meals
Good service. Had the game on which was great
Good breakfast
Double expresso is awesome
Cute place, decent food but the service was pretty bad. Not very attentive at all. Would not go back
It's amazing! But their hashbrowns are phonies.
Old school place. Great grits (that's a big deal in the South!). Not sure why all these other reviewers are unhappy with this place. I've been there for weekend breakfast a half dozen times and the service and food are awesome. Highly recommended if you're from out of town...Been here for almost 100 years!
We went for a late lunch and coffee. Everything was tasty and fast. Our server was great.
Nice laid back ambiance, friendly staff. Great cafe drinks. Classic place to visit on Franklin Street.
Wonderful choices like the Chicken Marsala or Scottish Salmon. Friendly, attentive service with iced tea.
This was my first time visiting and my first time eating grits. But I will say, it was the so good!!!!
One of the last of Chapel Hill's old restaurants. History! (Also, good food.)
Used to be my favorite place in Chapel Hill but i did not receive my food for almost 2 hours before a basketball game and had to leave before any food arrived
Never been inside
Oldest restaurant in Chapel Hill still going strong. Recent renovation looks great. Menu is creative, fresh and inexpensive.
good okay service lacking
Impressive enough brunch spot that I come from the Carrboro side, past all of my other options, to brave what I call the Campus side of downtown, to eat here. For a typical breakfast spot, the coffee is great. I usually go out to coffee after going out to breakfast. I think the best bang for your buck is the smoked salmon plate, served on a bagel + eggs your way. It comes with 3 large pieces of smoke salmon, which I find to be very generous for $9. Their biscuits and gravy had a bit too much pepper spice in their sausage gravy for my taste, but they're another great value. The ambiance is really quaint, with exposed brick. It was a beautiful place to watch a bit of small fall this weekend, and all seating is booths.
Fun atmosphere, great omlette. Good for brunch!
Good food Good service
Such delicious dinner. Highly recommended for any evening
Food was good, prices fair.....just ok nothing to write home about
Poor customer service. Waitresses seem to ignore customers on purpose; barely checked on my table and they were totally unfriendly. Food was okay. I had to ask to change my coffee since it came cold. I also needed to call the waitress again for utensils! I felt ignored, discriminated, and disrespected. I’ll never go back.
What a surprise! It has been several years since we ventured in to the Carolina Coffee Shop. The last time was "so-so" so it took us years to try it again. With new ownership by a group of Carolina grads, including UNC soccer star Heather O'Reilly, the place has a totally new vibe with an updated classic interior and great food. We'll be back!!
Great coffee, variety of delicious foods that was prepared well, and friendly knowledgeable staff. But seemed to be under staff.
A decent place on Franklin Street. We waited a long time for our food (dinner time), and it was pretty average. I may go again to try breakfast/brunch, but it definitely isn't one of my top choices for dinner.
I have been to the Carolina Coffee Shop on several occasions, and the service has always been exceptional - the food not so much, but it is still good. I feel at home and well taken care of when I go. The seating is a bit odd and uncomfortable but is by no means bad. I will definitely be back. :)
I liked the atmosphere, but staff started moping the floor while we still have been inside having our food, and it looked like they closed earlier due to lack of visitors... Not sure I would visit this place again.
This is a really great place with a nice bar. You can sit and have coffee or tea at the bar instead of alcohol and no one would be the wiser. The prices are reasonable. It is an old historic-type place and all their coffee is locally roasted. The coffee is amazing, it'll make you want to slap your mamma.
Carolina Coffee Shop has a special place in my heart. It is the oldest restaurant in North Carolina and a quintessential experience for anyone visiting Chapel Hill for the for the first time. I often visit during the week for a grilled chicken wrap and pub fries. The corned beef hash is my favorite dish from the brunch menu. The coffee is from Carrboro Coffee Roasters and is delicious! The wait staff is always super friendly and accommodating. This is a very popular location so they are typically very busy, especially on weekends, so the earlier you visit, the faster the service will be. I've always have a great experience at Carolina Coffee Shop and hope to return soon!
My favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill. I’ve been visiting here periodically for almost 40 years and have never been disappointed. Love the atmosphere and the location in the heart of Chapel Hill on Franklin Street. Consistently excellent food and friendly service — and the best coffee in town!
Worst experience at a restaurant I’ve ever had. We waited for a table for maybe 5 minutes, no big deal. It took 10 minutes for our waitress to come over and ask for our drink orders, took another 10 minutes for her to bring them out. We asked if they were still serving breakfast at 12:15, and she said she would ask. She came back and asked what we wanted, and we had to remind her to check on breakfast for us. By the time we had ordered, it was 12:40, and we arrived at 12:05. Tables that had walked in after us had received their orders. She came back around 12:50 asking us if we needed anything, and my friend ordered a mimosa. At 1:10 she came to the table next to us, and we flagged her down and asked her to check on our food. 5 minutes later it came out, but my friend’s order didn’t. They asked if she was missing her food, and she reminded them of it. Our waitress came out with it soon after, and my friend cancelled her mimosa. The waitress did not come and check up on us at all until at least 10 minutes later. She asked us if we wanted the checks, and brought them out in a stack and stood there while we put our cards in. Brought them out 5 minutes later, again in a stack. We left at 1:45. It took over an hour and a half to get a meal, which is ridiculous for a small coffee shop. The food wasn’t bad, but the service was awful. I will not ever recommend this place.
Been coming here for years and it always delivers! They recently updated their interior and menu and it is AWESOME. The cocktails are really a highlight for me, and the burger is fire. This place will always be a hometown favorite for me!
A great place to get coffee and a pastry when you are on the run.
Probably the most cozy environment on Franklin St with a dedication to value, service, and taste when it comes to meals.
Cute restaurant with excellent service.
Understaffed so all waiters carry an attitude that's bigger than the state or Carolina. Stay away! #delete-Carolina-coffee-1922
Nice place, ok menu, bad coffee, under staffed. Too bad I can't give it a better review.
Good food. Servicer was a little inept.
As long as I near Chapel hill NC I have never eaten at this place. I had the Carolina Burger w/Grapefruit juice. Service and food was really good.
service was ok, the two stars are for the eggs benedict, which was overcooked, and took a long time even though there were 3 tables including me..
Coffee was a pleasure to drink... locally roasted.
Getting a table is easy, but food takes a long time. It's great once you get it though!
One of my favorite spots and a great place to grab a beer right on Franklin Street. This is a great pre or post game spot as it backs up to campus and it is an easy walk to Kenan Stadium. Some of my favorites are the fried green tomatoes, steak sliders and the chicken Marsala.
Great cappuccino
It's somewhere you go for the atmosphere rather than the overpriced menu. Sadly, the atmosphere isn't great considering how quickly the staff try to rush you out. Just go to Starbucks if you're looking for a coffee shop to study or meet with friends in.
Ahhhmazing staff.. Especially the girl with all the tats!! Lol
Absolute worst service imaginable! We went in for lunch on and it was not super busy (less than half the tables were full) we were seated for over 15 mins and were not even greeted by a waiter or asked what we wanted to drink. We ended up leaving because we didn’t have time to wait all day to be serviced, not that the staff cared they didn’t even acknowledge us leaving!!!
Food was phenomenal and we had a great server! Jenni had a great personality and was happy to get anything we needed, with a smile, even though she had been there all day. Will definitely go back!!
I had the friend chicken sandwich and tried a cocktail with whiskey and strawberries. The sandwich was dry. And there was no getting away from it. The cocktail was watery and had an almost chewy texture that just through me off. The up side was that I had a very cool server. I will come again and try their breakfast because from the menu it sounded amazing.
I enjoy eating at Carolina Coffee Shop! I’m grateful that they were open during the snow storm. There’s a great atmosphere in the restaurant. I’ve had the brunch and it’s great. I enjoy the steak and eggs with a side of grits.
Great french onion soup, though a bit salty. The French dip was as nice as the soup. Highly reccomend
Cozy with good food and good service
Visited before going to a performance nearby. The vegan "Impossible burger" was surprisingly good, the cup of hot chocolate was large and satisfying :)
The brie and bacon omlet was delicious. Served with fruit, grits or homefries. Relaxing atmosphere however service is a little slow.
OUR BAGEL WAS DECENT, BUT IT WASN’T A NY BAGEL! SINCE I HAVE MOVED FROM NY I CAN’T FIND A GOOD ONE BECAUSE OF THE WATER. THERE IS A PRODUCT CALLED NEW YORK WATERMAKER THAT YOU CAN INSTALL AND USE TO HELP MAKE YOUR DOUGH BETTER!
Been sitting for 15 minutes and no service. This place is the pits.
Nice place, good food and fast service.
Nice clean friendly
Got there before the first home football game of the season rush hit. Got recommendations and very good service. Once they got busy (listening to other customers being difficult), staff was still as attentive as they could be with as many people. Happen to know it is great on slower mornings.
Rustic surroundings..great for a stop- in on a cold day while visiting shops
The classic!
Great place to grab a bite to eat. Sandwiches and great breakfasts. Their hash is exceptional.
Our last morning in Chapel Hill we stopped here. Wow! Shrimp and Grits. One of these was a special order for a diet, not a problem. Also ordered an omelette to go, this was perfect. From the Midwest, the coffee tastes oily, not sure if this is the roast or equipment. A great place and I would go again.
Great breakfast place - dinner was not the greatest but the staff are friendly and once the college is open - the place is always busy....always. Excellent coffee as well :)
